*shocked silence*

Well, I'm editing because I just couldn't think when I saw this yesterday. I can't remember being this shocked by a celebrity death since Roberto Clemente's plane went down.

Or this upset.

I was a huge fan from the first time I ever saw him in The Patriot. I remember going to see it with XDBF and, afterward, saying that I thought the guy who played Mel's son was going to be a big star one day. He impressed me from the start. Anyone who could stand out so much in my mind while on screen with an outsized Movie Star like Mel said a lot about his acting and charisma.

I've seen most of his films since because I enjoyed following his career, almost like I feel like I discovered him. He never really disappointed me, even if the material did.

But I can't begin to tell you how much his performance in Brokeback Mountain moved me. As someone who is not much of a romantic, it's amazing to me how he affected me in that role. That film is on my top 3 list of the most romantic films of all time. It brings me to tears every single time I watch. And it is Ledger's performance that does it to me.

He was a great actor. I know he was very young and would have gone on to even better roles. But he, to me, was one of the best actors working today. I'm completely at a loss and can hardly believe I feel this way.

My deepest sympathies to his family, his friends and colleagues, and especially his beautiful young daughter. Know that I will miss him.

No Glow, I don't think anyone mentioned Brad Renfro's death and this is the first I've heard of it, so I'm glad you did. How sad. I know he struggled with drugs, but I really thought he was a promising young actor.

I'm also very sad about Heath. He will be missed.

And now they're saying overdose was a possibility, but it's because they found pills near the bed. That's not a guilty verdict until we find out what kind of pills were involved and if they were in his system (and even then, he didn't necessarily take them). For all we know, it's Advil.

"RE: CNN Link"
Posted by Snidget on 01-22-08 at 05:31 PM
Overdose sounds like a reasonable explanation, but it is way early IMO to be making pronouncements like that.

Although if the press wasn't jumping to conclusions way too soon they wouldn't know what to do with themselves.

I am in shock. I was obsessed with Brokeback Mountain. I watched the DVD every day at least twice a day for about 3 weeks. I am not exaggerating. It was such an incredible movie that meant a lot to me.
I was so impressed with the entire story, the performances of both Heath and Jake -- and how it touched so many people. This kind of story and movie was so long overdue....

Wow. I am in shock. I remember being in complete disbelief when Aaliyah was killed in the plane crash, but a big part of that was because it was the day after dd was born and I was in a hospital with only Dutch and French channels and I couldn't be 100% certain that she had died until I could confirn it at home.

How incredibly sad. I really liked Heath Ledger (not to mention how incredibly gorgeous he was) and his role in Brokeback Mountain was certainly groundbreaking. He will surely be missed by many!

Edited -- I forgot, he was one of the Bob Dylans in "I'm Not There".

Reading the obit in the Times today, he was well-liked in Brooklyn and Manhattan by neighbors and by personnel at clubs/restaurants where he used to hang out.

I can't believe this. River Phoenix was one thing but Heath actually carved his place as a great actor.

Whenever anyone speaks of a young one who has lost their life, there is always talk about what a rare talent that person was. River wasn't really given that chance to shine through, to prove what an exceptional artist he could have been.

Heath was. And, if I may say so, Robert Downey Jr. passed through that threshold that allowed us to see what an incredible talent he was. Fortunately he got a second (third, fourth) chance. RDJ may or may not make a comeback.

Heath never will.

RIP Brave Knight (Thank you Agman)

First, shock, sadness, grief. Second, I thought of you, Dan.

I was waiting for DH to pick me up at work after a meeting. Had I not been at the meeting, I would have gotten the news through CNN breaking news email.

Instead, my phone buzzed and it was a text message from my female kitten. She said "Heath Ledger died."

I waited for the punch line.

You see, it was just a couple of days ago when DH texted me and said that the Toronto Maple Leafs were going to change their name, and I was like WHAT?! That's like blasphemy! Then he texted again and said "They're changing it to 'tampon' because they're only good for one period." {{groan}}

So, tonight when DD said "Heath Ledger died," I waited.

Nothing. No punch line.

His family read a statement from their front lawn in Australia. They are adament that this was an accident, as was his publicist. By all accounts, he had been exhausted from his turn as the Joker on the upcoming Batman -- the role had drained him and apparently had a profound affect on him. He was unable to sleep, and was taking Ambien, but it wasn't helping. He was also being treated for a recent bout of pneumonia.

I have a feeling that this is going to be ruled accidental by drug interaction. He made a mistake.

OMG he was so gorgeous and so humble and normal. What a loss.

Perez Hilton is reporting that Fred Phelps and his minions are planning to protest Heath's funeral because he promoted gayness by being in a gay-promoting movie.

There's a link to the website of this nut, but I won't go there. I'll just take Perez's word for it.

Why can't the earth open up and swallow people like this? Why do the good die young and Fred Phelps just keeps getting older and fvcked-uppier?

Some other news outlets are reporting that as well.

Since I would suspect the family would have the funeral in Australia.

I dunno how the Aussies would view that kind of thing, maybe they'd keep them there for awhile (poor Aussie prison guards).

The only other person or group of people that equal Fred Phelps and his disgusting minions in the race for who is the most detestable on the entire planet, it would be either OBL and his minions or GWB and his.

This is another thing that had me in tears today. It's so very sad that some fucked up person like this can walk among us and make the world uglier while somebody like Heath who makes the world more beautiful is taken away.
RIP Heath

And it won't be for mourning.

"And along comes John Gibson..."
Posted by geg6 on 01-24-08 at 02:47 PM
to prove that Faux News is every bit as classy as Fred Phelps:

Opening his radio show with funeral music yesterday, Fox News host John Gibson callously mocked the death of actor Heath Ledger, calling him a "weirdo" with a "serious drug problem."

Playing an audio clip of the iconic quote, "I wish I knew how to quit you" from Ledger’s gay romance movie Brokeback Mountain, Gibson disdainfully quipped, "Well, he found out how to quit you." Laughing, Gibson then played another clip from Brokeback Mountain in which Ledger said, "We’re dead," followed by his own, mocking "We’re dead" before playing the clip again.

RIP

I don't know one actor from another most of the time. I did not see Brokeback but I do remember him in the Patriot and a few other movies that people have posted.

It's always sad to see someone so young pass.

Me too.

But that being said, from what I've read she thought he was just out of it from either drugs or alcohol and was doing what she thought he would want. As in no outside involvement to keep tabloid fodder down. MK probably thought so also, so she sent her security people over to contain a potential PR problem. This isn't to say the chain of events weren't stupid, just that I think celebrities are treated differently and not always in the best way.

Regardless, I don't think it made a difference in Heath's case.

I think what gets me is after she decides she needs to call 911 she takes the time to call Ms Olsen back to say I need to call 911.

At that point you just call 911 and hope the security people on their way can deal with it if they find out when they arrive.

Yep, mixing drugs with like effects can cause exactly this sort of thing.

They can act synergistically so even if you add them all up and it appears to be a safe total amount it can act like you took many times the total amount.

That is an awful lot of different things that all can have the same action.

True, but I doubt that he was taking them in any sort of normal way. Most likely he was seeing more than one MD (I doubt any real doctor would give him three different benzodiazepines) or taking from someone else, and additionally taking them in a lot higher doses than prescribed. I see this behavior all the time, unfortunately, and in our small state we have a system in place for tracking these people down, both for their safety and for others. It's not perfect, but it helps.

"RE: Accidental overdose"
Posted by Snidget on 02-06-08 at 11:59 AM
Yep, when you see multiple prescriptions for the same type of medication he probably was doing the several doctors that don't know what the other one is doing kind of thing.

With the reported sleeping problems I would not be surprised if there was a keep taking something until I pass out routine going on. Which often isn't going to get you quality sleep, making you need something even more the next night, and so on and on.

It can be really hard to judge where the tipping point of mixing stuff like that is going to be. That one more pill can have a much bigger effect than people expect. Doesn't help that a lot of those make you less able to keep track of just what you took and you may think you are taking something you think you haven't when you already have.

I think most places have some sort of mechanism for catching people at the multiple doctor to get more prescriptions thing, but it might be harder if he was getting stuff from different states (or even from the UK, where I think he was filming recently). With enough money there is usually a way to get around any safeguard that gets put into place.

I can't help but think of Elvis right now. Sure he was older and had probably been "abusing" medications for a lot longer, but it still comes down to the same thing.
I'm sure if either had known it could kill them, they'd have found some other way to cope with the problems.
