I know, it's still a little early for Christmas, but it does take a while to organize the Secret Santa.

So, are we doing this again this year? Who's hosting?

ETA: emydi has graciously offered to be our hostess this year. Thanks, emy!

Yes, he did. But I'm asking if anyone (other than me) wants to do it this year. I enjoyed hosting the year I did (or did I host the anniversary one?), and would enjoy doing it again, but if there is someone else who hasn't hosted before and would like to, I don't want to hog it.

Thanks muchly.

OK, some sucker kind soul agrees to be the host (usually the one who starts the thread asking about it). There will be a sign up thread. We set a deadline to sign up, everyone who signs up sends a PM to the host with their address. We set a price range (usually $10 - $15?) and a deadline to have sent your gifts, but some people do go over. We'll have another thread, for likes and dislikes. After the deadline to sign up, the host will do a random draw, assigning giftees to giftors. You will receive your giftee via PM. Usually the first person to receive a gift will start a thread for everyone to post that they received it, and what they got. The giftees should try to guess who hir secret santa was at that time. Then, after everyone has received their gifts, the secret santas reveal themselves.

Have I left anything out?

In tradition of thread starter=hoster, I nominate Arkie to host.

"RE: OT Secret Santa?"
Posted by arkiegrl on 10-31-07 at 10:18 PM
You're just saying that because the time I hosted before, I went crazy and bought gifts for everyone who participated. (Well, for almost everyone. I was going to make a gift for someone, and I still have it in my project bin, halfway completed. I really need to rip it apart and start over. But I swear, at some point, you WILL get this gift, syren.)

*points down* Besides, emydi has volunteered.

I checked for last year's thread (sorry, no spending any more time in the archives than that), and what Tribe went with is about the norm, IIRC. Deadline to sign up should be about the middle of November, gifts need to be mailed within the first week of December.

ETA: If for some reason you decide you can't or don't want to host, let me know. I received a PM from someone who said she is interested, but skeered. So, if need be, she & I can be co-hostesses.

I know that's happened a lot, but I will say this - the person I was "warned" would not follow through on sending a gift *DID* send a gift for the exchange I hosted. I'm not sure if I had a non-gifter, or just an extremely late gifter.

Alright, I'll sign up.

Couple of questions, was that a yes or no with Estee? (There was a threat joke made earlier in the year, and in a reciprocal demonstration of levity I will do a odds of survival the draw calculation. I may have to detonate any package with a NJ postmark on it).

Also, have very many people simply quit posting after SS Christmases past? As if they, well, you know, had an accident? Or something?

However, I'll have a mighty sweet (a metaphor? or literal?) present for my secret someone, heck, why should it be a surprise, it's a #### #####'ing ####-plated #######!

OK. I will admit that my SS gift arrived in Canada sometime close to Valentine's Day last year! But, it was not, and I repeat was NOT my fault! -- The border was very picky about addresses in Canada and mailed mine BACK to me. Then? It took about --ohhhhh 3 1/2 weeks and many, many, many phone calls and trips back to the offending post office before it made it to the recipient. I felt horribly about the arrival time! It really WAS completely the fault of transit (and I had P.O. receipts with dates and times to prove it to tribe and my SS)

Thought I'd chime in and say, after this experience? If you get someone in Canada? Send it sometime this week to arrive by Christmas, or shop on-line and have it sent direct.

I don't know if Canada ---> USA would be easier. I'd probably offer the same advice.

As for me?-- Well-- I'd like to participate...
but I don't have an address to give out.

I'll see if I can come up with a creative solution..

Yea, I hosted last year and it was a fun time. Thanks everybody for allowing me the opportunity to do so. I even see a couple of my host gifts being shown as well. Thank you.
I do have to admit to a small little glitch with a single gift that got lost in the mail and a trend towards the later arriving gifts being those that had to cross the Canada/US border.

This might lead one to desire keeping the countries seperated when "randomly" picking secret santas. This practice is something, that even though on the surface seems judgemental and bigotted, that I wish I had instated last year. Even against the detractors who cited that with a smaller pool of secretsantas to choose from it would be easier to guess who had you and visaversa.
Keeping them seperated more than makes up for the level of stress provided by the cross-border postal snafus. Leaving plenty of leftover brain space for worrying about the natural procrastinators.

Have fun hosting, emydi!

Nope. It sure enough does NOT. It's funny, kinda *now*

There was more than a sheer look of horror-- that came Riiiight before the stomping, swearing and screaming on the front porch. The neighbors avoided me for a good loooooong time. LOL!

My vote would be for the non-segregated OT gift exchange (but realize I didn't have any problems giving or receiving my gifts).
My reasoning is since that Canada only has a total population of 257 and most of us meet up twice a year (once for the annual polar bear hunt and once at the Sears Mail Order Outpost when the new catalogues come out to do our ordering for the year), it would be very easy to figure out who our Secret Santa is (and since we are all related anyway, we are already getting each other presents). Besides, since our shopping is very limited here, having an open SS means we might get something not from the Sears catalogue (and there is only so many ways to dress up pemmican)

Can poutine be shipped internationally?

"RE: OT Secret Santa?"
Posted by frodis on 11-01-07 at 03:04 PM
You could let people specify whether they're willing to send to someone outside their own country. It might make the random draw a bit more difficult for emy, but if people are willing to send gifts over the border, they can take that chance.

It's not *that* hard to send a package internationally, but it does require a little more legwork, paperwork, time and precision. If someone is willing to do that, why not let them?

"Question"
Posted by Max Headroom on 11-01-07 at 09:04 AM
Is the intent of the Secret Santa exchange to give a nice gift (within a defined price range) or a gag gift?

I've seen both kinds in this neck of the woods.

"RE: Question"
Posted by samboohoo on 11-01-07 at 09:40 AM
Max: I've seen it all. We have always set a limit at $10 or $15, but I think people go over it.

I've participated in about 5 now, 1 as host. I've had some good experiences and some even not so good. But I like doing it. I like to put something of "me" into it. And it has also led to me meeting people on a more personal level, which I usually enjoy.

Um, just a suggestion... Having another thread where we can post likes/dislikes may make more sense than PMing suggestions to you. I don't know about anybody else, but I don't really want to suggest my gift. I'd rather be happily surprised by whatever someone else has selected for me.

There are a few things I can say I really can't or won't use, like candles after one cat set herself on fire and, racing through the house to get to the tub upstairs (where she went, not where I was racing her) could have easily torched the place.

I, and most others, can give an idea about some generic things I like, and I know some peeps collect certain items. But, I really don't want my SS to feel limited by any suggestions I might make. I'd have missed out on some wonderful gifts if that had happened. Sending a list of suggestions along with my PM feels a little too much like a shopping list to me. YMMV.

Thoughts?

But that was back before I became a *real* starving college student (when I lost my scholarship), so I'm going to have to pass.

I Just wanted to say to all the people who can't decide--definitely do it! It's a lot of fun and receiving your gift is an added surprise around Christmas time (and finals!).
