"Pork for Nostalgia"
Posted by mattben on 10-29-07 at 10:33 AM
Those who cannot remember the past, are condemned to repeat it.
-- George SantayanaCruel GOP “cuts” funding for Woodstock
Those mean Republicans cut funding for the Woodstock museum. They really are against education.
At least according to the Associated Press.
In a bizarre story that pitted hippies and townspeople against those meany Republicans, AP reported that the plucky Woodstock nation would open the Woodstock museum despite those meany Republicans.
Nyah.
The Man can’t keep them down.
Completely absent in the AP story is Alan Gerry, one of the co-founders of Woodstock. Now a billionaire, Gerry donated thousands to the campaigns of New York’s senators who, surprise, surprise, sponsored the $1 million pork barrel for Woodstock.
The guy is worth at least 1,000 times that million. He could have forked it over and kept 99.9% of his wealth.
A comment: Woodstock took place in 1969. We are now (nearly) 40 years after the event meaning the attendees are pretty close to 60 years of age. Nostalgia, as a drawing card, will work if it works at all for an event like Woodstock, only for those who actually, you know remember. This place will be an empty box with no visitors in 20 years. Why the hell should the general public support it with federal tax dollars?

Will our next Woodstock be handicapped accessible? Er, check that; it's probably a given.

Given how much money the government sh!ts away on any day, would anyone notice this baco-bit of pork?I'm not saying I support wasted money, but this is making a mountain out of an anthill if I've ever seen it.
Quick! I need $40 billion! I have a hangnail!

Well, I have to say I'd rather waste money on something that at least has some sort of cultural and social significance. I notice the GOP has no problem funding things that have no significance at all like the bridge to nowhere, the funding of which (despite all the outcry) still went to the state of Alaska.>Completely absent in the AP story

Unlike those poor, poor defense contractors who have more pork barrel projects than anyone else. They, apparently, are much in need of tax dollars to waste. Especially since it costs them so much to bribe people like Duke Cunningham. Lets cut them a break, okay?

I guess I'm not getting the snark here. Are you saying that it should be handicapped accessible? Or shouldn't be? Or that it's somehow not conservative to want to include the disabled? Or that it's somehow just a liberal thing to want to do that? Or is it that there's gotta be some sort of joke here that I'm not seeing or understanding?

What's objectionable about public funding of public history sites?(I'm asking you because you took an even-handed approach to all the "carp," so I'm trusting you for an answer that doesn't have anything to do with the politics or social mores associated with any particular site.)

LAST EDITED ON 10-29-07 AT 03:13 PM (EST)Too many homeless, hungry, sick people that need shelter, food, and meds. I think the money should be spent in that direction. That and the fact that the government types have done such an absolutely astonishingly bad job of distributing money to ANY cause. Giving them more money to piss away is beyond ridiculous.

So, just to get back to what HD was asking...You'd be against all those orgasmic tributes to Reagan that are always being proposed, too.
Like, for instance, the actual and hidden costs to change the name of National Airport to Reagan National Airport. I'm willing to bet it wasn't cheap and it wasn't paid for by the private sector.

Yep.I'm willing to bet it wasn't cheap...
Because it was the government paying for it, which is almost like writing a blank check.

No $10,000 toilet seats for this guy, eh?How much do you supose they pay for that bad government-grade toilet paper?
If you are sure that you're right, you probably aren't.

It's free, Slice. You just have to wait in 3 lines, fill out 4 forms (in triplicate) and wait a few months and that darn paper is yours to keep. Unless you are using it to blow your nose; then it depends on what governmental region you live, but you'll get moved forward if you can prove minority status.

I hear fooner's train a'comin'
Are we quibbling over a million dollars? Ok, which will it be - funding for the Woodstock Museum or 7 more of these GBU-28's at $146,800 a shot?

Who knows? It could be a good lesson so that we never fall into that kind of depravity again.

Honestly, the GOP is just being bipartisan here by asking for a liberally-oriented museum to give up funds. They already cut back on the number of papers that'll eventually be housed in the Dubya Presidential Library, which reduced storage and preservation costs by a huge percentage. Can't they ask others to make sacrifices too?
"hmmhaha"
Posted by dabo on 10-31-07 at 11:15 PM
LOL! Honestly, this whole thing would barely be news at all if we weren't in a perpetual election cycle, much less important than the Bush Administration Bluebook. Bethel Tourism will b just fine without Congressional funding. But hey, you see, I really don't particularly want the bother of a museum, but if they forced all that money on me for one I suppose I'd be obligated to clutter up a barn with stuff and charge admission. But they'd probably want to tell me my business, you know.Anyway, I was saving this as a Halloween treat for PRE and Spanky and Wayne and Matt and RR and oh gosh whoever all. She's out there still! All these years later she's still plucking away, a trueblue iconic hippiechick, a gen-u-ine Woodstock performer.

ROTFL.
Well, to someone who uses Woodstock as their icon, I have to admit that after all these years, I still have a crush on Melanie.
Your posts during the past week have really made me smile.
Here's my Woodstock song.
Okay, substitute Iraq for Vietnam.
It may not rhyme but...
Come on all of you big strong men, Uncle Sam needs your help again. He's got himself in a terrible jam...
