Also: that friend isn't crashing on your couch every month, the cycle to nowhere just got tossed to the curb, it's time to start including a lot more semicolons in your sentences 'cause the end stop ain't happenin', you really are just going to freshen up, and as a matter of fact, that actually happens to be a stray bit of string.

Okay, so it's not the best odds in the world and there hasn't been a medication without some bugs to work out since the first headache victim started picking willow bark splinters out of their tongue. But at least for now -- don't care: dancing...

Hmm.. Regular and expected or irregular and unscheduled. I think I'd go with the first.

The moods that accompany these visits? I hope they also abate.

And just to say, I'm happy for all of you for whom this is a life improvement.

You deserve it.

There wouldn't be the up and down swings since the amount of hormone is steady.
For some women it would make them moodier, but that is true of all BC pills.

I think it's brilliant!
Why menstrate unless you are trying to conceive.

It's too late for me, but I would have gladly skipped the years of sickness and pain that having periods caused me.

The article says there is a slight failure rate with the low dose BC pills, makes me think women would be more apt to use condoms, which is healthier for them as well.

It's another choice, it's about time.

I saw this on the news this am too.
My first thought was "is it healthy" for a woman not to have her period.

I'm very patiently waiting for the first person to say it's a sin for a woman not to have her period.

One week, tops.

I wager if anyone does, it'll be a man.

If God didn't want women to have periods, he wouldn't have created sentences.

Always do right. This will gratify some people and astonish the rest.

The Doctor on the Today Show said it was NOT unhealthy, and that once women stopped taking it, they resumed menstration and were able to conceive just fine.

It's not like the period is stuck in there.

I'll be the first to admit not knowing how all our 'inner works' work.
Hopefully soon I won't have to worry about this any longer.

I know in women athletes lose their period because they don't have enough body fat for it. Woman gymnast even stop developing because of it.

And the pill looks HUGE.

That is the package? Oh, nevermind

Half of the study group dropped out, and of those that stayed only 59% were without bleeding/spotting.

This isn't new and improved at all. It just the same drug combo in shiny new packaging- probably going to make the cost significantly higher too.

I agree with you Keith..this is not new...at all. I have been skillfully changing my period for years through extended taking of BC pills, or going for three months straight without stopping and thereby eliminating my period, all with my doctor's blessing and guidance and without any side effects whatsoever. I would have to see the drug combo, but I doubt this is significantly different than most BC triphasal combos.

Women that have been using Nuvaring (vaginal ring) only have quarterly periods, so the first step to breaking the monthly cycle has already been taken.

That said, I've always heard that not having periods at all had been linked to endometrial cancer (from the doses of estrogen used), which is why doctors discourage women from using Nuvaring to block periods completely (as some reportedly have already been doing). I don't know how Lybrel works, so I don't know why this isn't an issue with Lybrel.

Yay if it works for you. I used to be on Seasonale- only 4 periods per year. However I had to go off it because of the hormonal side effects.

yes Seasonale svcked- I was constantly spotting
I'm now trying Loestrin 24 but my doc wants me off everything- she said I could try Mirena (it's an IUD with hormones) or uterine lining ablation- (not for the future fertile)

I was on that Seasonale crap. 4 periods a year.

Yeah, that's all well and good, but when one of the periods is 6+ weeks long and it makes you anemic, it's time to consider other options.

That was a miserable 6 weeks. No sex, and roughly 781654 tampons.

Believe me... the Tampax company's stock must've skyrocketed throughout that ungodly experience.

I've returned to the relative un-joy of having 12 a year, but it beats the hell out of six weeks of misery.

Step right up.

Your post reminded me of our Snow Leopards. They don't quite understand why, but the assumption is that it's weather related.

They normally range in the Himalayas, with temps of 40F above to -20 below. In captivity the females stop ovulating completely during warmer months. But, during colder months they make up for it, going into heat every 2 weeks.

It's made me at least wonder if human females have the same kind of temperature, or other, constraints that we just haven't recognized given our controlled environments. (Other animals, including PBs, have food/weight constraints that may also apply.)

My guess is, yes. But, in our "advanced" society where we manipulate our environment, we'll never notice.

In short, would it be unhealthy for a woman to hold her period in abeyance? Looking at nature, I can't think it would be. Happens all the time.

Tribe sent springtime flowers! blogging's scary
Now. How we're holding it in abeyance? That might be. There may be more natural ways. But none that I can think of that most women would welcome.

I thought Depo Provera was the first product to knock women off the cotton pony.

If it's anything like Depo -- no thanks. Depo was one of the factors that led to a complete physical, mental and emotional meltdown several years ago (one good thing came out of that period of my life -- OT. )

I loved the first two months. The third month was, well, let's just say it was an ewwwy mess and leave it at that. The depression and moodiness from the extra hormone pretty much finished the job.

I will watch this closely. Nice to know they're researching things like this, when the erectile dysfunction and baldness studies are always in the news.

ETA: This is just based on my own experience. YMMV. My severely disabled niece takes Depo shots because her having periods? Would be a nightmare for SIL. She does just fine with Depo.

Rolly made this.
