And then Dubya takes two hours to look over the results and, if they're unfavorable to him, declares martial law. (Come on. Does he strike you as a gracious loser?) But let's not think about that just yet. Instead, let's report on the last-minute blitz against our senses designed to throw things in a given party's direction. And how does that work? By making us so disgusted with the process that we never vote again. Hey, if there's no ballots, they can post any results they want...Locally: I hate my Media Zone sometimes. I get the NJ, NY, and CT ads, with the occasional interruption so PA can get a word in edgewise or, given the season, an edged word in throatwise. Quadruple blitz. Put it all together and about forty percent of the television ads are for candidates of various stripes. The radio's a little safer -- fifteen percent, maybe twenty -- but it's increasing by the hour. The current favorite game is the out-of-context quote (both parties), followed by outright television bigotry -- 'I'm Peter King, and I'm in favor of profiling for terrorists. Islamic terrorists, right here in the United States. They're Islamic and they're terrorists. Remember that connection. And I want to build a really long fence around the country. Starting with my own estate, so none of you peons can get in. Our major regional independent, Chris Shea, is being based for -- brace yourself -- not being independent enough. The NJ Senate race has devolved into a he said/he said match that's starting to make me wonder if we're just watching a very expensive lover's spat. And the PA races? Let's let Geg have those. Forever.
Actually, you know whose ads have been a model of patience and restraint, no matter how much I disagree with some of the pro-censorship positions in them?
Hilary Clinton.
Sheesh.
Anyone else feeling like they should be learning all the words to the Canadian national anthem?

>(Come on. Does he
>strike you as a gracious
>loser?)Don't worry; his brass will be ensuring that the results are favorable to him. I already ran my individual Senate predictions, and I have the GOP coming out a seat ahead. That includes victories by DeWine and Santorum. That includes a win in Montana and Maryland. Basically, if the Dems can lose the seat, they will.
And then we wait for 2008. Dubya's approval ratings will be in single digits by then after he tries to pass a Constitutional amendment making himself President for life, and then he decides, "You know what? My reputation's shot to hell anyway. I'll just refuse to step down. That Obama guy that might take over sounds too much like Osama anyway. We don't want Osama in the White House." And he decides, what the hell, I'll try to stay in office. The single digits who still support him praise him; the rest of the country hauls him out of the White House and plops him back in Crawford, Texas and forces him to wear a Bill Engvall-approved sign for the rest of his life.
And then John McCain or someone gets elected.

>Now you're just being silly.
>Everyone knows it'll be Jeb. Good point. McCain's too old and too liberal, although by that time, anyone to the left of Dubya will be "too liberal." Although my "blaze of glory" scenario wouldn't play out if Jeb gets elected; Dubya would gladly hand the reins over to his brother.
I've also made up my mind - for my House district, I'm voting for Homer Simpson.

McCain's not all that liberal these days, if he's to be believed in his ads endorsing Jon Kyl and AZ Prop. 107 (Defense of Marriage Amendment). Of course both ads smack of "I'll scratch your back, you scratch mine", since he looks like he'd rather be drinking castor oil and his eyes keep darting like there's someone off camera waiting with an electric cattle prod if he goes off-script. Still, the rhetoric is very Bush-ian.

Titans? Oh yeah, the Titans. I remember the Titans. "...We are the Titans...the Mighty, Mighty Titans..."

I was home sick on Friday and I got 15 calls starting at 7:30 am to 9 pm at night. All of them seemed to be computer calls that would do nothing but bash the other side and none seemed to be paid for by the candidate. So I would pick up the phone and hang it up so I could try to get back to sleep. Then....Jenny from the Block called and I picked it up and their was a "Hello?". There live was Jennifer Granholm. We had a short talk and I thanked her for not leaving a bashing VM and said one of the things that needs to be done is stop all the PAC's and bashing call/ads.

Posted by PagongRatEater on 11-06-06 at 01:26 PM
There is way too much money spend on political ads, and way to much of it comes from the wrong sources. If it were up to me, candidates would only be able to use monies donated by individuals and maybe even just individuals within their constituency. No more PAC, union or corporate money to influence their votes or positions.I read somewhere that the amount of money spent on this election cycle will end up in the BILLIONS. There has to be better uses of cash than that.

But, the four of us had a great time.

LAST EDITED ON 11-06-06 AT 01:39 PM (EST)Yep,
Most of the very very obnoxious campaign ads here have apparently been funded by people out of state. There is one page that was tracking where Vernon's support was coming from and a lot of it is from out of state.
In his district you probably couldn't come up with enough people who are that radical to fund this nonsense. The people funding him do not care that he has not done the job he was elected to do the one time he was elected. They just like what he grandstands about.
I think that is why we didn't get a real Republican candidate in my district. They know this district is one that tends to swing heavily Democratic so the serious candidates find other districts to run in. That leaves a vacuum where anyone who can appeal to enough peeps on the internet can wage a muli-million dollar ad campaign that would almost be funny if it were an SNL skit.

It's a tribe creation!ETR: Excessive sigpicage.

Just a little over 24 hours before the 2008 Presidential ads start.Yes, I am that much of an optimist.
Miller finally has an ad out about good ol' Vernon. Usually it plays back to back with Vernon's latest Miller is a zero ad. Gee all ultra-rightwing groups think Miller is bad. Gee Vernon, how many groups rank your ultra-rightwing azz a zero? Huh?
Something about the one elected office Vernon actually got he only had for one term because peeps were tired of him not showing up for meetings and pesky things like that. (I mean do you know how much time it takes to get a monument made with the 10 commandments, et. and your name on it illegally erected...who has time for committees. The main response even from those that like having the 10 commandments posted even Moses didn't have an ego such that he needed to put his name on the tablets he brought down from the mountain top)

It had a few quotes from the N&O and the News and Record about how nasty the campaign has been over all. It didn't directly address any of the specifice points of the negative ads.It had been running on News14 where I am (I don't know if the Triad and the Triangle get different ads and stuff or not).

In Illinois, the Governor's race has been a dirty mud-sling-fest for a long time now. It's to the point where I really hate both candidates. The thought of casting a vote for either of them really bothers me. So, I'm strongly considering voting for the Green party guy, purely to send my own little personal insignificant message to the other two that I think they suck. Not that they'll ever know. I don't particularly want the Green guy to be governor either, but at least it's a vote I can feel dirty about in a self-satisfied way rather than a vote that I'll feel dirty about in a hate-myself way. (The Green candidate has a quote by Gwendolyn Brooks in his candidate statement, so I can always justify my vote as a vote for her. Even though she's deceased.)
On Saturday I went through the pile of mail that had accumulated in the front hall, most of which was political in nature. I actually try to toss the political mail into the recycling bin as soon as it comes into the house, but for the last couple of weeks I've gotten lazy about it. So, to put a little fun into the task of sorting the mail, I decided to see which candidate had sent me the most carp. Turns out it was a State senate hopeful, who lead the pack with 8 pieces of carp. The funny thing about them was that on each one, he had a list of people who endorse him, and on every one, one of those people was struck-through with a thick black line. Oops.
My favorite political TV ads are the negative ones who show the opposing candidate in an unflattering photo, in black and white. Apparently black-and-white = evil.
I got a call on my caller ID on Friday and it came up as "Political Call." I almost wanted to vote for that candidate if only for showing me the courtesy of being able to completely ignore him/her.
All of that said, I am actually looking forward to voting tomorrow. I'm cheap, I'll do almost anything for a cookie and a sticker.

It seems that neither candidate for any office in Ohio is:1. Qualified
2. Telling the truth
3. Likeable (this includes all the 'pubs who claim to be independent of their party and the dems who claim the same)
I watched one debate, the one in which Debra Pryce contradicted herself twice and ended with "The truth counts". hahahaha
I hate 'em all. My young voting age sons figure there is no reason to vote since they're all bad (and they won't).
As a co-worker and I were discussing, vote for change. The change might not be better but at least it's change! He, basically a 'pub, is voting all dem!

Why in the world do they hold rallies this late in the game? All they are pandering to are the ones that are going to vote for whoever the rally is endorsing anyway. So why spend the money?
Both Clinton and Bush was in NV this past week and both of their audiences were made up of folks you know without a doubt have either already voted or are going to be the first at the polls come Tuesday.
My thought is that those are awfully expensive soundbites. Especially Dubya's. How much does it cost us to fly Airforce One?

Rallies are for one reason and for one audience. They motivate the people who are already inclined to vote for you to get to the polls. Rallies are great for turn-out and increasing excitement in your base.

I read it. But, I voted before we left town. Even got to machine vote, which I didn't think was done for absentee ballots. But, then again, we're in a heavily Republican corner of the only Democratic stronghold in OH. We figure that paper, or machine, odds are that our votes will only count the way someone else thinks they should count, assuming they're counted at all. *sigh*
blogging's scary
And, for those that think paper was better? One stray pencil mark - anywhere on the ballot - got your ballot tossed in the "good old days". Assuming it was "noticed". And, plenty of ballot counters had dirty nails for days - after they couldn't get the remnants of lead cleaned out from under. My GF was a Judge (elected). He was aware of a lot of that kind of carp going on - on both sides.
