"I went hunting today"

I love hunting at this time of year. I had the woods to myself and I didn't have to wear a silly blaze orange clown suit.
I was so successful that my dinner menu for tonight has been changed.

Can anyone guess what my quarry was?

Just because you hit an animal with the car doesn't mean you were out hunting.

Quail?

Roadkill is not hunting.
Unless you're in a Carl Hiaasen novel.

I'll echo Geg, Morels? I haven't looked for any, should have some to eat by sunday as my brother in law is off for a couple days to look.
$14-$24/lb in the markets around the area.

Think I'll invite Bob over for dinner. She knows how I feel about cooking with fresh ingredients. What do you think?

Happy eating.

LOL.
I shoulda know this would be too easy for OT's resident food maven.

Yep it's morel season up here along the MN/WI border.
I found about 3lbs in under 2hrs. From the looks of them, the season is just beginning up here. We've had lots of rain and warm days lately so I'm hoping there will be lots more to come.

Tonights dinner:
Chicken breasts in morel cream sauce.
Wild rice pilaf w/ morels.
Fresh asparagus.
Field greens salad.

It's going to be good eatting these next 2 weeks!

See, I knew there was asparagus in there somewhere.

Mmmmmmm, morels.

Don't have any asparagus from sister's garden yet, though. The fresh greens are perfect, though.

The strawberries will be ripe soon, too.

I want a baby spinach, mushroom, Bermuda onion, and strawberry salad. Now.

Hey geg, I thought you'd like to check out this local resturant of ours. It's about 15min from our house and every year at this time they plan their menu around morels.

We usually try to get there sometime during May.

Give us a clue. What state do you live in?

You did remember that the sleeping pills wear off, didn't you? You didn't go and do anything like send the vicar's wife around the village pushing a deep-seat pram with a mattress made up of a hundred and twenty pheasants, right? Surely you didn't go and do anything that stupid...

...I'll be in the caravan.

Wow. Bravo for the obscure literary reference of the day award.

You got it.

Honestly -- that's considered obscure?

Well, I have to imagine that it's been 20 years since most folks around here have read it, if at all. Although around these parts I imagine most people HAVE read it, but try busting that out at your average cocktail party and see how many giant question marks appear over people's heads.

Well, I didn't get it. But I'm basically illiterate anyway. Or have dysfunctional memory. I forget.

Danny the Champion of the World is possibly my favourite Roald Dahl book. (yes, better than Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) I know we/I read Danny when I was young, and the images from the story have lasted with me. Re-reading it with my kids was a real treat.

Roald Dahl was a genius writer. My DD (10) has read a lot of his books.

Thanks Estee, for stirring up some old memories!

BTW, Bob. Did I mention that I'm thinking of inviting you to dinner on Sunday?

I promise. The ingredients will be fresh.

Morels are just about my favorite food. Jealous, jealous, jealous. I hope my BIL finds a ton (as Nolay indicated above). Then he'll drop a bag off on his way home. Otherwise, we'll probably have to wait a few weeks.

In other food news, we are picking up tamales from my sister tonight.
