"Sushi Forbidden - Good thing or Bad thing?"

Just found out I can't eat sushi while I'm pregnant. I'm horrified. I didn't know this with my last kid as that was 12 years ago and I hadn't even tried sushi yet.

No sushi. None. Forbidden.

Does that sound great or bad to you?

And what else can't I eat?

Starting to rethink this whole thing! Grumble, grumble... I guess veggie sushi will be ok... for now

That sounds like a good thing to me.

No raw chicken parts.

That whole sushi scare is... well... just a scare, really. Pretty soon they're going to be suggesting that pregnant women eat nothing but a pre-digested sterile mash with appropriate nutrient content and live in a padded room with nice safe exercise equipment.

What.

I was just thinking that

I can live without sushi. The presentation is great but I don't care much for it. Veggie sushi sounds really good! What kind of veggies are used in that?

One of my favorites is the extremely simple kappa roll.

Just yer standard sushi roll, with nothin' but cucumber inside. Yum.

My favorite veggie sushi has cucumber, avacado, shitake mushroom, and japanese pickled dicon radish, which gives it a spicy crunch.

Yum!

I had forgotten how much I like that. I feel better already.

Edited to add: Go to a sushi place, tell them you are want to try lots of sushi but you are a vegitarian. Most places will go out of their way to introduce you to all kinds of tasty options!

That sounds horrible. Completely horrible.

I dunno if I could live without my spicy tuna and alaskan maki.

Ah, you understand! And it's worst, because we're driving out to Seattle where the fish is FRESH!

My lovely supportive husband laughed at my sushi fit. And then reminded me that I love Dynamite rolls (spicy sushi with a cooked, battered shrimp in it).

I must go have some soon, am craving like crazy!

Keep your eye on the ball!

Oh, I understand completely. I never had sushi until I went to college, but then I got hooked on the stuff. Hey, it's better for you than crack, right?

The best part is that there is this awesome sushi place down Beacon St from my apartment, and it's open til 2 am. Best.Late.Night.Snack.Ever.

If only I had read this post slightly earlier, I would have told you to meet me there. Now I'm just going to crave sushi till tomorrow.

How did exams go?

Even if you had, I'm in Maine for the weekend for Mom's family holiday thing (back tomorrow, weather permitting, to drop off the car and finish shopping and then back to Maine on Wednesday). But there will be other late night sushi cravings, I'm sure.

Exams were no problem: T&E was fine (though a grossly unfair exam in terms of the stuff she asked. I didn't care because I worked fast enough to figure it out, but a lot of people were right upset), Evidence was better than expected, and Remedies was about what I thought it would be. And I'm done. Whoo!

We gonna see pics at some point of last Saturday?

Not to compare apples and oranges, (or is that bananas and peaches?), but when a friend of my brother's was diagnosed with HIV, sushi was one of the foods on the forbidden list. Perhaps it has something to do with the supposed hepatitis tie-in. Like JV said, I believe this is more myth than fact. Iggy would be a great one to ask about this.
Me? I had to pretty much cut out rice when I was diagnosed with diabetes. The carbs quickly break down into sugar. So now I still order unagi (my favorite!) and assorted fish both raw and steamed and they are very hospitable by simply rolling it in seaweed.

I *heart* all sushi except for octopus. Blech!

"HIV"
Posted by Immunegirl on 12-19-04 at 02:25 AM
The issue with eating sushi when you are HIV-positive is that sometimes (rarely) there can be parasites in the fish. Most people can fight them off, but of course those who are HIV-positive might not be able to. By getting sushi that is handled well/from a "reputable" place, you are less likely to have a problem with that. However, they still recommend that HIV-positive individuals don't eat sushi when their CD4+ T cell counts are low. Once the patients are on medications and their CD4 counts come back up, then sushi is a go.

*smooches* Hi! How are you!

I? Think it's a very, very bad thing. I'm seven plus months into my own sushi-free pregnancy experience (to be followed, I hope, by a year or two of sushi-free breastfeeding) and just like last time around I crave sashimi all. the. time.

If I understand it right, by the way, I think listeria is the threat to watch out for with sushi. It's also the reason you're not supposed to eat deli meats, soft cheeses, and half a dozen other things while you're pregnant. Small quantities of listeria, too small to make you ill if you're healthy and not pregnant, can make a pregnant woman seriously ill and can cause both early and late-term miscarriage.

IG can probably give the straight scoop on this much better than I, but my sense from doing way too much reading is that pregnancy is an immuno-suppressing process, because a pregnant woman whose immune system is strong and fully functioning would probably react against the fetus as if it were a foreign body and work to expell or kill it. As a result, icky bugs that normally would pass right under the radar become a more serious threat. *sigh* And that means no sushi and no unpasteurized brie, even with really good crackers and plenty of caraway seeds.

The agony of it all . . . Now I'm drooling for tekka maki.

"Fetal-Maternal Tolerance"
Posted by Immunegirl on 12-19-04 at 02:19 AM
You're totally right about the potential for a mother to have immunological problems with a fetus. It is sort of like transplant rejection (the baby is half like dad, so it is a half-mismatched transplant) The immunological processes that occur to allow pregnancy are pretty interesting. I wouldn't really call pregnancy immunosuppressing though. It is more of a site-specific immunosuppression (as opposed to the whole body being immunosuppressed). The uterus is immunosuppressed, but the rest of mom is pretty normal. The placenta mediates most of the tolerance. Basically, if mom's immune system tries to do anything bad to the fetus, the placenta tells it who is boss. Otherwise, mom's immune system is okay-in fact it needs to be strong because mom ends up passing some of her immune system to the baby during gestation and also through breast-feeding. The real worries about infection are to make sure that mom has enough nutrients and to make sure that mom doesn't pass an infection to the baby, whose immune system isn't fully developed.

I couldn't even think about eating raw fish. Have you ever cleaned your own fish? occasionally they have these little parasites in them that are look like really small maggots. Those are things that are clearly visible, living in the flesh of fish. I'd hate to think of other things that live inside fish meat that cannot be seen with the eye.

Booo. That sounds like a very, very bad thing to me. I'm sorry.

If you would like, you can give all of your extra sushi to me.....

For those of you that were wondering about the reasons for this-it is twofold.

One, as is mentioned above is the risk of parasites, Listeria monocytogenes or otherwise. They can certainly make you sick, but the biggest issue is that a parasite's job is to steal nutrients from you, so a parasite infection leads to malnourishment. The parasite problem is sort of avoidable-the possibility of parasite contamination is greatly lessened by proper handling of the fish etc., but this is the main reason that pregnant women are told not to eat sushi or soft cheeses.

The other problem with sushi is actually an issue with seafood in general. There can be relatively high levels of mercury or other chemical contaminants in fish (depending on where the fish are from) that are also bad for a baby.

I don't know how real or how serious either of these threats are. There aren't any published studies talking about someone who actually had damage to a baby because of any of these things, but at the same time it's better to be safe than sorry. A lot of the oils in fish are really important for development. I haven't been in this situation, and I don't know how I'll deal with it. I suppose I'll generally stay away from bad foods, but I don't think that having sushi once or twice would be the worst thing ever.

I'll answer the other things about immunosuppression as replies to the people that asked them, just to keep this sort of short.

Yeah, I forgot to mention the chemical thing and was just checking this thread to add it if it wasn't already. Fish cummulate chemicals in their bodies instead of breaking them down. The older/bigger the fish is the more chemicals are concentrated in it.

You are pregnant?!?!?!?!? How wonderful! How did I not know this? *internally blames Nutty* What a blessing! Congrats!

You are worried about sushi? Well, you must not be having much naussea....I regret to tell you, from one sushi lover to another, it is off the list.

A recent list of the no no foods are below: (Years ago, I am sure these were all okay to eat when you preggy with your dream boat son!)

Swordfish, tuna and shark is also off the list due to high levels of mercury. (although 6 oz of canned tuna a week is safe.)

Raw eggs...like in Ceaser Salad dressing.

Soft cheeses (ie fetas, bries) and cold cuts are also out because of lysteria...although your risk is much lower with cold cuts.

No changing Frisky's litter box either.

First, I had no idea you were pregnant. Congratulations! That is so exciting!

Secondly, Monsty is a great big green dork.

Thirdly, I ate sushi and unpasteurized cheese throughout my pregnancy and I (and baby) are just fine. It doesn't work for everyone, but I was lucky enough to have a very easy pregnancy (especially no nausea) and a healthy baby, so pick and choose your advice. My Korean friend who just had a baby says it isn't forbidden in Korea, so I think there's perhaps some cultural bias.

Heck, we had sushi last night and I'm still nursing.

Fourthly, congrats again! That is so great!

they recommend to avoid seafood altogether. my mom said it had to do with mercury. but she craved sushi something awful when prego with my youngest sister 12 years ago, and my sister turned out Just Fine.

i'd say you're safer if you eat the cooked varieties. my fave is avocado roll and smoked unagi roll.

This is what gets me about pregnancy. So many theories and too much advice and information.

Trust your gut. If you are comfortable do it, if not don't.

Most everything is OK in moderation. I think what the warning about specific foods are more for you to not eat sushi everyday, 2 times a day.

I feel your pain. I was so psyched once I spit out Bubba and could have sushi again.

You can have the cooked (crab, shrimp) and the vegetarian, though. You just have to keep away from the raw stuff.

The other toughie for me was soft cheeses. If you know they're pasteurized, you can have them, but if you're not sure, you can't. Given my love of gorgonzola, that was hard. But I made mega-brownie points when I threw a baby shower and made sure all the cheeses were pasteurized.

You know the difference between you and me? I make this look good.
