"Pink Eye"
Posted by PepeLePew13 on 12-10-01 at 11:03 AM
On Saturday morning, our little boy Zach woke up with his eyes nearly welded shut -- and after a little wiping off of the mucus, we discovered that he had a nasty case of pink eye brewing. The poor guy's face looked like it had been used as a punching bag by Mike Tyson.
We took him to a walk-in clinic and they prescribed us some eye drops and told us there was not much anyone could do except to ride it out and just swab his eyes every once in a while with warm water and a little salt.
Yesterday, I developed a mild case of pink eye and thankfully it seems to have subsided a little, I've been rather vigilant to keep my eyes as clean as possible without flaring it up -- so far, so good.
Right now, the little guy's eyes are still red and a little puffy although nowhere near as bad as it was on Saturday. I'd like to know if anyone has any ideas on how to alleviate a case of pink eye other than to keep swabbing his eyes and to quarantine him at home (yea I know, we went to the mall yseterday... perhaps not the best of ideas but we didn't want to break the neighbours' eardrums with his wailing)?

LAST EDITED ON 12-10-01 AT 11:23 AM (EST)Pepe...there is really nothing to do for pinkeye except use those eye drops and keep him quarantined...I know it sucks.
I get pink eye quite a bit and the eye drops usually clear me up in about two days. A warm wash cloth might help alleviate some of the itching and pain if he's got that. Make sure everyone is washing their hands really good and make sure to wash everything (i.e. bedding and stuffed animals or anything that could've come in contact with him) in really hot water to try to kill the germs. I would also go and get some disinfectant spray to get the doorknobs and anything else his little hands might have touched. The last couple times I've had pink eye I've succeeded in not passing it along to anyone. Washing hands and not touching eyes are the biggest things. If your wife shows any signs at all she is going to have to throw out make up and everything...her brushes can probably be steralized.

YOU!!! You are the one who always causes my pink eye!!! Awww...I'm just kidding Pepe. I used to work at The Disney Store in our mall...I was constantly coming down with pink eye and strep throat (it probably doesn't help that I have a somewhat compromised immune system due to some meds I'm on). Those kids touch everything!!
Edited to add: My eyes are all of a sudden really itchy...do you think Pink Eye can be transmitted through the computer??

That's a real good idea, thanks for suggesting that. Big washing day coming up... he's had his mitts on just about everything in the house by now. You can tell him oh so many times but he just won't stop chasing the poor cat...

Oooh, she's not going to like that. Yes, I had to throw out my contact lenses after a bad pink eye experience while I was living in Calgary and couldn't go to work for a week as I used to work in a graphic design lab where about 6 of us constantly rotate between computers. Nothing says "I like you" like a case of pink eye left on computer keyboards for all of the coworkers to infect themselves with.

LOL... so sorry, Tink! I was particularly vigilant to make sure he didn't touch a damn thing in the mall and bought him a stuffed dog to keep his hands on it the whole time. I even warned Santa Claus about his pink eye.

Pink eye sucks. Good luck getting better.

You are getting great advice. I do have an idea for something I used with a bad eye infection, and have also used when I've goten itchy allergy goopy eyes. It sounds strange, camomile tea. You brew it strong, then let it completely cool, then you rinse the eyes with it. I don't know if it has any healing properties for the eys or not, but it is very soothing. poor little guy

What a coincidence. I work at a daycare and the entire Kindergarten class currently has pink eye. I have managed to somehow avoid it so far - I'm keeping my hands away from my eyes. Your little guy hasn't been to Vancouver recently, has he? Survivorchick

Pink eye just sucks. I hate getting it, thankfully its not very often. Keep doing what everyone else is saying and I will pray it goes away very quickly
