"Of black helicopters and the TLC."

Ok, many of you are much more google-savy than myself so I'm looking for some help here.

I've got an inlaw who never met a conspiracy he didn't like.

I get THIS and THIS link, along with several more like it, "proving" a huge conspiracy about 9/11 and the Pentagon.

I never realized this whole movement existed! My problem is that I can't find a good spot that rebutts the hoax.

Has anyone ever seen these wild theories before?

I can tell you that my neighbor, an Arlington County, Virginia police officer cited as one of "DC's 9/11 Heroes" for his efforts in the 20 hours after the attack (which occurred as he was heading home after his regular overnight shift and an early-morning court appearance), was driving by the Pentagon when the attack occurred; he saw a commercial airliner fly into the building.

On the other hand, my uncle was a cameraman and didn't get me a date with Jenna Morasca, so I'm probably not all that reliable a source.

Thank you, now I only have 2 degrees of separation, hope I can convince him. He is, however, about as stuborn as I am so...

I can attest to the strength of the windows. A coworker's husband was a contractor on that site, as was my BIL. The windows they had just installed on that wedge of the Pentagon were the strongest in the world--built for military aggression. It's not surprising to me that they didn't shatter.

And what, I ask, happened to the actual commerical plane in this "theory"? Are the passengers at Area 51 with the aliens?

His whole theory is that the hijacked plane was shot down over the ocean, which goes against the grain of the "I'm-a-believer-in-everything-Michael-Moore-and-Bush-blew-9/11" that he has..it has to be quite a thin tightrope.

Oh, here is the punchline I forgot...he is a journalism major

So they shot it down and then crashed something into the Pentagon to make it look like a plane crash to cover up the fact that they shot it down?

Whoo Boy. That's, that's, that's some amazingly convoluted thinking.

I've never seen the one on the so-called 'missle' that hit the Pentagon - what a bunch of carp. You know that Ted Olsen's wife (the attny who saved Bush's bacon in the Florida recount) was on the Pentagon flight and I personally have heard her final phone call to her right before the impact. If any of this is true I find it hard to believe that the government killed people to intentionally blow up the Pentagon. Not to mention that there is no reason at all given as to WHY anyone would actually intentionally do that. Strange co-incidence to set it up so it would happen within minutes of the WTC attacks,

Here is a website that disputes these specific charges in more detail:

Here is some more deconstruction of this ridiculousness. (first one that leaps out are the knocked down light poles on the highway).

Thanks PRE! Kind of slow responding today; did battle with a mighty parasite- caught even with Norton Firewall and AntiVirus.

Make: Boeing

You don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure out what happened to the wings.

Yep, you don't have to be Scooby Do to figure out this mystery.

On the other hand it sure does illustrate the power of a guy with an agenda armed with half-truths to put together a really convincing argument for total BS (*cough* Michael Moore *cough*).

Keith,

It is difficult to argue with believers in conspiracy theories. Essentially, you cannot disprove a conspiracy theory b/c the evidence that you can muster to dispute them is part of the conspiracy and the lack of evidence to prove them is part of the cover-up. (See the reasoning?)

Bob (Robert) Goldberg wrote a book on post-WWII conspiracies that is very enlightening. He looks at UFOs, JFK, the Anti-Christ, etc. There are some other good books whose titles escape me at the moment. I'll try to post them tomorrow when I get to the office--they are on my shelves there.

Here are the books:

Paul Coughlin, Secrets, Plots, & Hidden Agendas: What You Don't Know About Conspiracy Theories
Mark Fenster, Conspiracy Theories: Secrecy and Power in American Culture
Robert Goldberg, Enemies Within: The Culture of Conspiracy in Modern America
Daniel Pipes, Conspiracy: How the Paranoid Style Flourishes and Where It Comes From

Goldberg also did a piece on conspiracy theories and 9/11, but I can't locate it at the moment.

As the aniversary of 9/11 gets here, I am sure that this crazy theory will be going around again. It seems people would have better things to waste their time on.
