"I'm running a Flea Market table Sunday, am I crazy?"

Posted by LionChow on 06-04-04 at 01:38 PM
This Sunday, I'm doing something I've never done before, and I'm not really sure what I'm getting myself into. I'll be running a table at a pretty big flea market (Dover, NJ for all you guys stopping by).

Anybody out there done this type of thing before?

Words of advice (other than to run away)?

I'll be selling poker chip sets, and I'm going to set up my poker table and invite people to play (for fun only so I don't get arrested). I'm thinking of making it that if they can beat me heads-up over ten hands, I'll give them $10 off the price. I'm hoping to attract the Father's Day shoppers and the hapless husbands that got dragged along against their will.

Any other ideas to pull people in?

If you want to see the sets, look at my site at www.EPokerChips.com

Does including your own website in a post make you eligible for the traditional "Rory the Sheepdog" reply, or do I get a break for being an SB long-timer?

But this one is only "pretty big."

However, there is a strip bar in town if you get bored.

Be friendly but not excessively attentive. I prefer to buy from the nice people stalls that greet you warmly and then let you look in peace unless you have a question.

My aunt and uncle run a table at a flea market every Sunday. They make pretty good money selling all kinds of carp. I'm sure you'll do fine. Good luck!

If I ever lose my cabana boy job I want to be a carp salesman at a flea market.

My only comment is that unless the crowd is huge, there might not be enough of a market for a single product. I could be totally wrong however.

The town advertises that they usually get around 200 booths/dealers and 10,000 - 12,000 customers.

You may do well then. Hope it is profitable.

I think it all comes down to how many bored husbands there are.

"Look honey, here's that bird house lamp that I was looking for! See, it has dried flowers and seashells glued onto it."

"Uh, yeah. That's great.
Deal me in..."

Sounds great, LC, especially the part about you setting up a table to invite folks to play. Around here, 'interactive' booths always do better at shows, flea markets, etc. It draws people in, and if you get a lot of men, you'll be the talk of the market! Good luck!

I like the idea, but at the same time I can easily imagine this as an episode on the Simpsons or King Of Queens.

Homer wanders off from Marge at the Flea Market and ends up losing his shirt at the poker chip set table.

Hold on, I've got to go call Matt.

I thought you of all people LC, would not be a party to the wholesale buying and selling of fleas. Will this madness never end?!

Stop selling my people dammit!
