"We are stardust..."
Posted by PeterTorque on 08-20-01 at 08:35 PM
...we are golden, AND we are uranium for that matter. The heavier elements like uranium and lead (present in trace amounts in every living person) could only have been formed through the combination (or fusion) of several lighter elements driven by a release of tremendous energy. This energy is briefly unleashed when a dying, burnt-out star of incredible magnitude collapses inward, then explodes outward in a violent supernova that annihilates entire galaxies, and for a microsecond, is brighter than all the rest of the stars in the universe combined. Much like the one that happened long before our present galaxy was here, giving rise to the very same heavy elements we all have in our bones today. I think the fact that we all carry around that much history should make each and everyone of us feel really special and unique, while at the same time show that deep down inside, everyone's really a lot more alike than they would expect. And a lot more comlpex, too.

As related in an episode of Babylon Five:Predicate: All of the matter which forms the universe was formed in stars; We are made of star stuff ...
Observation: We are the Universe made manifest ... attempting to comprehend itself.

Ok dabo, let me get this straight, because I'm not sure I completely understand what you're trying to say. Are you saying that we are made of the universe and that we, being made up of the universe, are actually a part of the universe that was created so that we can try to understand the universe, essentially saying that we were made by the universe so that we (i.e. the universe) could understand the universe (i.e. ourselves) better? My goodness that sounds complicated

LAST EDITED ON 08-21-01 AT 03:31 AM (EST)The universe created us so that we could comprehend it, that is the essence of Delenn's philosophy. Put in reverse: What good is it being God if there is no one to be God for?

Buggy, if you want to use the Donald Duckie innertube thing, I'll use the water-wings...

None of you ladies watched B5 I take it; Delenn was the ambassador from the race of boneheads, her bonehead assistant was the kid from Lost In Space (the original tv series) who originally recorded the song about "Fish Heads.""If the race of man should be left naked upon a desert island, we should become extinct in six weeks. A few individuals might linger, but in a year would become worse than monkeys." (Samuel Butler, "Erewhon")

I will tell you a great secret, perhaps the greatest of all. The molecules of your body are the same molecules that burn inside the stars themselves. We are star stuff. We are the universe made manifest trying to figure itself out. Sometimes the universe requires a change of perspective.
(of course, Delenn's philosophies also included the perspective that some creatures are put in the universe to make certain we never take ourselves too seriously.)"If the race of man should be left naked upon a desert island, we should become extinct in six weeks. A few individuals might linger, but in a year would become worse than monkeys." (Samuel Butler, "Erewhon")

We're not just stardust, you silly Torque guy! We're made up of all sorts of things! Sugar and spice and everything nice, for example! Snips and snails and puppydog tails, for another! Some are mostly made up of snot, poop and spit, while others are comprised of old Barbie heads and Legos! I, myself, am a custom blend of back issues of Tiger Beat, marshmallow peeps supplied by Jizzy, and and a leftover chicken-liver mold from the Greenburg kid's bar-mitzvah! You can't just sit there and say "Oh, yeah, we're stardust, ya know" and just expect everyone to automatically agree with you! Love,
Itzy.....(who's gone waaaaay off the deep end, even though she was in the shallow side of the pool with Buggy and T!)

LAST EDITED ON 08-23-01 AT 08:36 PM (EST)You're right, we are way more sugar than stardust, way more. We're definately more Lego, too. But you know what we really are, way more than all that stuff you mentioned? Empty space. If you look at an atom of one of our your Barbie-head molecules, and say its nucleus is the size of a basketball, the electrons making up the outer shell would be a few miles away (and they'd be a small as marbles). Everything is just 99.999% nothing. (But what a a difference that last .001% makes!)

"FYI --it's heavy water"

I just thought I'd let you guys know, I took the liberty to fill the pool with D20, 'heavy water'; like the kind they use as a failsafe measure to cool core meltdowns in nuclear reactors. Sure it's expensive, but now even spashers in the shallow end cannot escape the inherent heaviness, even if on the surface they notice no difference between that and the lighter material.

LAST EDITED ON 08-30-01 AT 08:22 PM (EST)It's still H20, rather than H30; but the hydrogens in heavy water all contain one extra neutron in their nucleus, so they call them deutrons (or deuterium), hence D20. Tritium is a hydrogen with two extra neutrons. Deuterated compounds are useful as markers, like when they do a PET scan on your brain.
