I have been born, raised and live in a suburb of Boston, and I can tell you all that Antonia's Boston accent is so fake! It is so exaggerated at times and it sounds like she is trying so hard to display it in her speech that it sounds totally ridiculous. There are many times that she has no accent at all, and then she speaks with this version of the "Boston accent". I can tell you all that no one here sounds as stupid as she does. It's very strange that she tries to accentuate this the way that she does. It seems like it's just for attention - like she's trying to startle people with how stupid she sounds.

I don't think it's phony. I have relatives who live in Boston and they speak the same way. Maybe her accent is a little more pronounced than some, but it's NOT phony.

No it's phony because she uses different words at different times sometimes with and sometimes without the accent. Also watch her face when she's getting ready to throw out a really bad one.

LAST EDITED ON 04-27-06 AT 09:23 AM (EST)Me too. Listen to her "ar" sounds. Sometimes they are VERY affected, sometimes not at all. Or, she'll use a word that sounds "Boston-y" one minute, and in the next sentence, completely normal. And I agree with the upthread remark about her facial expressions...She loves to get a reaction!

I think she does whatever she needs to do to get attention...being loud, controversial, interrupting, trying to start arguments, or even a fake accent if it gets her noticed. She likes being abrasive and that includes an "in your face" accent.

Glad I'm not like that!

What some people won't do for a little attention? Hmmmmph.Whether it's fake or not it has worked for her and she is on national television. The season is almost over so she better work it while she can...and a time will shortly come when she isn't getting so much face time. Wish she had caps for the gap. Jim Carrey wears his, Letterman doesn't. Like her freckles though.
She's Allison and Jill rolled into one. Iguana never called Allison a thief. Iguana never called Jill a thief. Yet, this is the first label she gave to Antonia.

LAST EDITED ON 04-27-06 AT 10:30 AM (EST)I have a friend who was born and raised in Lowell and her accent is similar (more pronounced though) to Antonia's. I have lived in many places and I notice that certain accents are more pronounced depending on their educational and economic background.
Look at Christina and Allison. Both are from North Carolina but Christina hardly has an accent at all while Allison tries to sound like a Scarlett O'Hara.

I was thinking the same thing. I was raised in the south but I have very little if any accent on a regular basis probably because my dad was in the military and we moved around a lot before we stopped in Texas (I was 10). I have moved around quite a bit since I graduated from high school and I haven't lived there since I was 25.My brother and sister both live there and have a slight accent - and it might sound fake to some but I know it's not. When I talk to relatives or when I get angry (gasp) a little bit of southern accent comes out of me. And I use a lot of southern little terms like, "It beats a poke in the eye with a stick."
I also have a friend who is from South Africa and most of the time her English sounds very American but on some words like 'water' her old accent comes out. When I first met her and heard that I thought she was faking it. But as I got to know her and her background I figured out she wasn't faking.
I hear this same kind of thing with Antonia. Most of the time she sounds pretty "normal" but when she is mad or upset about something the accent comes out.

Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.

OMG she grates on my nerves. Personally, I think she is faking that accent believing that it creates the illusion that she is upper crust. I cannot wait to see her walk out that door forever, but unfortunately with the issues she has displayed, think I will be muting the volume and reading the closed captioning for some time.

"Upper Crust"? LOL--if that's what she's trying to do, she's not doing a very good job. Her accent is clearly working class--she hardly sounds like a Kennedy!

I think it's real, and not an intentional affect.Sadly, I know someone (an Ex) EXACTLY like her: same hometown, same manner of speech, same clothing style, same eyebrows (yikes!), same money issues, same inability to relate to others, same "the-world-owes-me-a-living mentality... and she is miserable. She's burned a lot of bridges, has no friends, and I'm sure she will use people until the end of time.
I HATE to see Antonia come on the screen. The similarity is spooky, and I relive the embarassment of having lost HUGE $$$$ to "My Antonia" (literary pun intended).

Again, being from the Boston area my whole life and working in a town with the most pronounced of all Boston accents (Everett), it seems that Antonia tries to shock with how exaggerated it is. Really, many have a Boston accent, but this accent she speaks sounds completely abnormal, and I don't think I have ever heard it this bad (and I have heard MANY strong ones). Also, at times she sounds as if she has a midwestern accent, or no accent, seems to "catch" herself, and then displays this ridiculous sounding Boston accent. I think it's for show, It's almost as if she looks at Iyanla sometimes (after she speaks), and seems perplexed as to why Iyanla doesn't pick up on it and make some some comment to her about how strong her accent is!

I live close enough to Boston to know that many people from there speak like that. I don't think it's phony, I think that many Bostoniams (in general) don't want to admit that they might sound like that.

Well as another native she puts it on thick when she needs it and then magically puts back the vowels and consenant sounds where required when she forgets she isn't being watched. The caaaa has often been a car when she isn't trying to get attention. Cuuumm on has also been pronnounced correctly when she is casually speaking. She has an attention problem much more than an accent.

Yep, this is true! I have a couple of southern friends with barely a hint of an accent until they need something from a store clerk or a waitress or something. Then it's "y'all" and "darlin" all over the place! But hey, it works.

I can't figure out why anyone would WANT to FAKE the accent she has.Fuzzy chicks and baby bunnies are CUTE NOT her way of speaking. If she's affecting an accent to achieve that or to try and make herself appear hip or streetwise it's not working for me.Personally,I find a good East Boston accent sexy.I'm a Boston transplant from the deep South, who grew up in the Midwest. So there's a lot of "wicked" and "y'all" interspersed together in the mix to confuse people. It can be really hard to drop an accent once you have it.

I disagree about Antonia faking her accent. I don't think there is anything fake about Antonia whatsoever. All her shallowness and cluelessnes is the real deal, in my opinion. I also think that many people change their speach to suite the situation. I'm from the deep south and speak one way with my family and another way in a business setting. Her attitude absoluitely kills me, but I still like her. I think inside she really is a sweet girl, she just hasn't grown up to be the "grown a** woman" that she professes to be!

Being from the Boston area. I think her accent is real as is some of the slang she uses. I couldn't count how many times she uses the word "LIKE" Adjective, noun , verb, she uses it "like" for everything.
I can assure everyone watching she has made me very conscience of the way I speak.

Well if Ms. Antonia wishes to become a professional at anything other than Ms. Christina's type of profession, I would suggest speech therapy while in the SO house. I can't imagine any company wanting someone who speaks and handles herself as poorly as she does. I wouldn't allow her to answer the phones let alone work professionally. Maybe she can work the phones in another manner with Christina's direction but that doesn't fit IV's woman of honor category.Part of the process of becoming a professional and being able to make money is being able to communicate professionally. Every time she opens her mouth I keep wondering who let her out of school without teaching her how to speak English. Even in Boston we have standards.

Funny, I do think she plays up her materialism and shallowness a bit but only because somewhere along the way she learned that this is a sign of status or wealth. (Which it's not of course, this is a stereotype she was taught) She's definitely materialistic and shallow but plays it up trying to emulate some idea she believes about people with money.

. I met a beautiful couple in South Florida once from Boston : Bob and Barb. That should do it lol.
They also informed me (from TX orig) that good had only one syllable?
It's all good.

Bentherdundat - that's perfect! You're exactly right! She sounds suppah re-TAH-ded! Since I tape the shows, and I'm a little behind, I was watching one tonight from earlier in the week, and in this episode, Antonia totally pronounced her r's in one word, and then in the next, didn't. Either you have the accent or you don't. It doesn't switch on an off, from word to word. I still say she just does it for effect.

I agree with you Baxtera. It's almost more the attitude BEHIND the accent than the accent itself. She does a lot of posturing when she speaks.Kind of reminds me of a bad imitation of someone in a Rap video.I have no idea if it is conscious or unconscious on her part.If she's trying to make herself look tougher or if that is just the way she emphasizes a point. She's an attractive young lady and I agreed with you when you pointed out that she could use some lessons in grace and courtesy ala Cassie from Season 1.She comes across as VERY rough around the edges.Which can be kind of cute on a very young girl but ends up making a woman look hard and used up.Given some maturity she may turn out to be a perfectly lovely person. But as it appears now.......yeah a Gangsta Elmer Fudd just about covers it.
Nice photo Cygnus. What a cute couple!!Didn't swipe that out of someone's wallet did ya?No really, very cute couple.

I grew up in the burbs of Boston too (I have sinced moved around the country). I don't have an accent which many people have commented on (as in why not?). I do have one word that I cannot pronounce without the accent though. For some reason I cannot say drawer with the ending "r" sound. I can only say drawah! My parents, who grew up in West Roxbury, have pronounced accents with dropped "r's" all over the place. My father is always invited to read the lesson at church because people enjoy listening to his accent! My mother cannot put on shorts - she puts on shots! Oh, and they really do drive a caah!I actually enjoy listening to Antonia's dropped "r's" but I am not sure that her accent is really a Lynn accent. There is something off about it. Maybe her attending a private catholic school has something to do with that?
It is funny but many Bostonians can tell where other Bostonians have been brought up by thier regional accents. For such a small state, it is amazing how many accents you can find!

I used to teach at a private catholic school and they had the accent right. To me, Antonia's accent still seems like a bad imitatation - sort of like in the movie "Good Will Hunting". Even the movie critics constantly remarked about their bad imitation of the accent in the movie (even though both actors are from Boston). And, yeah, Antonia sure does have a lot of gangster gestures!

I'm going with the Gangsta Elmer Fudd. That is definitly what she sounds like. I'm telling you I can just feel my hand reaching for that 504 referal pad for the speech therapist. She needs help. With that "tude" she won't be going far in this world.

Send her to a speech therapist? Are you forgetting that she alledgedly WANTS to sound that way? She's supposed to be faking it to sound like Gangsta Elmer Fudd. What's a speech therapist going to do with her?Knock her unconscious and feed her good grammar and diction subliminally? That's like trying to force Jodi onto a diet. She'll go threw the motions but at the end of it all she looks almost EXACTLY the same. After the speech therapist how about charm school? That would be a challenge.Do they still have charm schools?I'll go get my horse and buggy now.

No the speech therapist might actually be able to show her how using a better speech pattern might actually show people she's an intelligent woman instead of coming off sounding like a gang member.

I think her accent is just what it is, an accent. It's probably never been an issue until going on national television and have people with different accents hear her. And when she was there, the show hadn't even aired yet, so she probably didn't think much of it.However, if she has thought of it, I think it may be the opposite of what most people think. I think she may use her accent normally but when concious of it, try to downplay it because she feels out of place.
Sure, it isn't the most attractive accent but if someone told me I had an accent I'd be like "What are you talking about?"

Her accent is real. I'm an exBostonian, and I still have my accent, some people think I'm from Ireland or England, lol. My parents are from NYC and I also have a small NY accent.
Antonia always says -here- like -he yah- and -there- like -they ah- She might be from Doh-chesta, Reveeah or Jamaicker Plains.

WOW I don't think a Boston accent sounds like someone is from England or Ireland at all. I think Antonia sounds like that woman from Friends who played Chandler's annoying ex-girlfriend Janice with the nasal voice and grating on your nerves accent. Remember they had her on last time when Cassie left and they had the little drum and dancing fest outside...

Trust me it doesn't. I've been asked alot, though. Antonia is very loud and her accent makes her seem tough, like Rosie ODonnel, with her NY accent. Janice's voice is over the top,IMO

I've seen interviews with her and she normally talks with a deeper voice and with less accent. But she has said that she has used a voice and speech coach to achieve that. She said that she did put on the accent a little heavy for the role of the Nanny.

I dont know if her accent is real or not. I am from California where everyone speaks differently and I just love to hear her talk. She is so full of herself and so immature and so funny that I enjoy her. I love the accent whether it is fake or not. At least she isnt boring like Christie and Toadie and Cassie.

One of the fun things about reality shows is hearing regional accents and expressions, which are largely stamped out in Hollywood--only exceptions are usually bad imitations of NYC and Southern accents. It's only been watching these shows that I first realized how much Southern accents vary--and boy, do they! The variety of New England accents are fairly new to me. It's only since I moved to DC that I discovered the tones of "Bawlmore" and "Murland."I think Antonia's accent is real, even if it varies. I have friends from NYC whose accents are stronger or softer depending on the situation.
I flip back and forth on some things, like the pronounciation of "roof" -- sometimes a long oooo in the middle (like "smooth"), sometimes a short sound (like in "book"). Same with the word "route."(FWIW I grew up in Cleveland.) And I agree with the poster who noted that we speak differently with different people. Even my grammar shifts when I talk to kids to reflect what I grew up with at home: "Don't you feel well/good?"

OMG--that is so funny! Having grown up in Jersey and priding myself on NOT having a Jersey accent, I still slip out an occasional "draw" (one syllable) instead of "drawer" and my other weakness is "mirra" instead of "mirror".

>There are many times that she has no accent at
>all, and then she speaks with this version of the
>"Boston accent".I don't mean to offend anyone who has a New England accent, but I must say that this kind of accent is my least-favorite accent in the US! It grates on my nerves whenever I hear someone speak with one, especially Antonia! I don't think Antonia's is fake, though, but I do agree with you, that she slips in and out of it, like Gwyneth Paltrow trying to be British in that movie, what was it, Emma?
Anyhoo, maybe she's not faking it, but trying to get away from it. Maybe she realizes how thick her accent is at times, like when she'll suddenly say "hahd" instead of "hard" or whatever...so maybe she's trying to rid herself of it. I do think she has made the show more interesting but I can certainly do without the "Bahstahn" accent! I cringe every time she starts talking that way!

Who cares about the dang accent - I can't stand the "I'm entitled attitude". I don't think she is getting it at all and I'm hoping that she goes up before the BOR soon and has an awakening. I see nothing changing in Miss Antonio's world so far. She is still acting like the child that was given everything and never had to work at it. Did anyone notice the comments she made about "my family means everything to me and we all love each other and I can't believe what some of the other houseguests have gone through. I mean - how can anyone treat their own child that way?" I really am sick of her already.

Having studied accents, regionalisms and dialects, let me tell you that the Boston/Massachusetts accent and the New England accent in general is extremely variable from town to town, state to state and from class to class. That makes it one of the hardest accents to master as an actor or dialectician.Antonia's accent is not fake. Does she "play it up" for effect every now and then? Sure. But it's not fake.
She also has a bit of the cultural influence from the African-American colloquialism in her accent. So her particular Boston accent is going to be different from someone who doesn't have that influence. (You'll notice this part of her accent is stonger when she speaks to Niambi or the guy she's working with on that poetry thing of hers. Again, this doesn't mean it's fake. The ear often adjusts to it's environment which is reflected in speech patterns.)
As for her "r's" coming and going? The "intrusive R" often appears when a word where the R would normally be dropped is followed by a vowel. Also, Bostonians will often put an R at the end of a word where there isn't one to begin with. (Soder instead of Soda, Idear instead of idea, etc)
Anyway, it's important to remember that accents, like people, are unique. Give the girl a break.

I have to say I still think it is for show alot of the time. I noticed how she spoke just like everyone else at the BOR and we could understand her when she spoke. She was pronouncing her "r's" and everything. It just seems strange that she can speak well at times and then speaks in her accent at others. It sure comes and goes alot.

It sure does come and go a lot. Having taught in a city with some of the most hideous accents you've ever heard, I still say she's playing to the camera and trying to be cute. The accent is way too "over-pronounced" at those times when I think she tries to "startle" people with it. Again, it seems like most of the time she doesn't have it, and then "remembers" to turn it on. I disagree that she's trying to get rid of it. I think she's trying to "get" it.

I forget what words she used the other day of the phone with her friend, but it was so slang @@# talk she had! It just proved to me she tried to "lingo" of the person she is speaking to at the time, maybe that is why it seems so different at times, she is using what works for that time is all.
