"Antonia is unreal!!!!"
Posted by tracyc1166 on 04-19-06 at 10:48 AM
I was shocked to see and hear Antonia on today’s show. What a piece of work. She is poor as a church mouse and truly believes that she is a billionaire. All that she has talked about since arriving is money. It is very sad to see that her values are so out of whack. LV seemed to be placing blame on her father when it seemed that she was raised primarily by her mother. Is that where she learned to lie, cheat and steal?

IV has this obssession with fathers. It can never be that people have bad decision making skills and don't choose to take reponsiblity for themselves. It always comes back to the father/daughter relationship. Jill turned to a criminal life, got overweight, etc. because of Dad. Allison had issues because of Dad. Does IV ever tell these women you make stupid choices because you choose badly?

I have to agree with you 100% on this one Baxtera you said it all in a nut shell.

I agree with you Baxtera in that I think there needs to be more personal accountability and less laying of parental blame. Did they say how old Antonia is?Because she seems outrageously young and immature to me.Its sad that she seems to have no concept of money or financial responsibility at all.Or that these mistakes she's making with money are going to follow her for many years.I think she's representative of a lot of young people who live in the MTV fantasy land of celebrity and don't understand the reality of working hard,a budget and doing without to get what you want. We're trying to instill this right now in our teenage son. That he needs to make good choices for his financial future and be very careful, especially with interest rates what they are on credit cards today. It's going to be a rude awakening down the road when Antonia wants to finance a house or car and can't do it.Or when she has to come clean about her mistakes to a man she wants to marry.Yikes.He's going to head for the hills.

Maybe Antonia saw Allison come on SO and get to write all her debt off ... free & clear ... thought she'd get some of that.Seriously, I do agree with you Lanna: "I think she's representative of a lot of young people who live in the MTV fantasy land of celebrity and don't understand the reality of working hard,a budget and doing without to get what you want."
It was the same with Paris-Hilton-WannaBe-Lisa! Have you ever seen the show on MTV something like "Sweet Sixteen" where the teen turning 16 has a HUGE blow-out birthday/coming-out bash? OMG!!! I screamed watching one. The daughter was all "It's all about ME! It's MY day! I'm the STAR! It HAS to be better than anyone else's party EVER! I HAVE to go down in history as THE BEST!!" When her parents dared to put a limit on her budget she went balistic. So, of course, they let her have it all her way.
Hey, just watching SpitUpLisa convinced me to put more responsibilities on my child who at age 20 was already 100 X more responsible than Lisa ever will be!!!

"Maybe Antonia saw Allison come on SO and get to write all her debt off ... free & clear ... thought she'd get some of that."She didn't need to come on the show to do that. Shoot, you can download the papers for bankruptcy online.

I missed Antonia's first sit-down. I know she's in debt, but what are the details? I tuned in at the point when she was shopping on Rodeo Drive with Iyanla. They should have been doing the same get out of debt procedures with Jill. For some reason, they didn't work on Jill's debt issues (I guess b/c she was overweight). Probably if Antonia was overweight they wouldn't try to get her out of debt either.

I sat watching Antonia's outrageous and arrogant behavior and all I could think was "Wow...she's going to be fun to watch!"
I think Antonia is going to become the next Lisa1-the houseguest you love to hate. Her over the top behavior will provide plenty of entertainment. I'm actually looking forward to it. Let's face it..the only houseguest they've had with any depth or that you could remotely feel compassion for was Bethany (and maybe Kim a little). Since this show is becoming more and more Springer like with the ridiculous excercises and false drama, they should just drop the charade once and for all and fill the house with houseguests like this self-centered diva wanna-be. What the hell-just make it a free for all at least it will be amusing.

ALl I kept thinking was that a puddle has more depth than this chick! She is going to entertain us highly. I don't know if it will be the constant inflated ego or her fantasy bubble of her life that will burst first. But it will!
To pretty to ride the bus!?!?! Oh my god thank SO producers for picking her. She is going to have me laughing at her every day!!!
I love her going on about the finer things in life. Like she is so classy yet that Boston accent is so inner city to the point where i wonder if she is making it up!

LAST EDITED ON 04-19-06 AT 05:07 PM (EST)Here in Boston we have been struggling to actually teach children to use consanants and vowel sounds appropriately. The fact she fails to use them is a sad testament to her inability to apply any of the lessons she's been taught in this life.

I haven't finished reading this thread and I must say I totally agre with you and BTDT...Iyanla does have her hands full with this one...this chick is totally out there, isn't she...is she for R-E-A-L?????
It's sad to see such a pretty girl with such a R-O-T-T-E-N attitude...when she opens her mouth all the beauty diminishes from her face...she's a real piece of work. I guess it's safe to say that she's very self-centered and spoiled rotten. I soooo agree with you Bentherdunthat...she's going to be fun to watch...and I believe that Iyanla loves a challenge...I could see her savoring her pleasure at taking this one down a notch or two.
I believe that Antonia is in for a wild ride...it's not going to be at all like she thought it would.
I'm looking forward to seeing how this one turns out.

I'm from Bahston, grew up in Chahlstown, and I don't tawk like that. But more importantly, I don't have her staggering sense of entitlement or arrogance. I'm curious to know where she grew up (at the risk of incurring the wrath of some board members, I'm guessing the projects...and before you start bashing me yes I've lived in the projects and have seen plenty of people with Antonia's mentality...my sister is one of them), because she has developed a sense of entitlement that is mind boggling. Based on first impressions, she has not been taught any lessons in this life except take whatever you can get, it's all about you, and the world owes you. Yes we have seen it before in SO houseguests (Theresa from season 1 and Lisa from Miami come immediately to mind) but I don't think we have seen it in quite this extreme before.

Actually, as a Bostonian, her accent doesn't sound so inner city. If I were to place her, I'd put her in Everett or Lynn, just north of the city. It's hard to explain, but she just has that sound.Besides, if she was in inner Boston, she's be complaining about riding the train, not the bus. She definitely a noth shoah girl.
(for people who don't speak Boston, that was north shore)

tracy...This is the same thing I thought while watching SO today about how IV seems to blame the fathers so much. It makes me wonder if SHE has a problem with father issues.I find it interesting how no matter what age, the parents are blamed. I think this is so typical in today's society how it's become fashionable to use psychobabble and an individual's background for any undesirable behavior. Believe me, I had a troubled background but have never used this as a scapegoat. What ever happened to trying to rise ABOVE circumstances. Although, I don't know that much about Antonio's past as far as childhood goes, but I still get irritated with this kind of endless excuse making.
"RE: Antonia is unreal!!!!"

I think Iyanla's deal with her Dad stems from the box of dollars story....that moment sort of sparked the materialism in Miss Antonia...
Yes, I think she (IV) goes back to the parents/Daddy alot but I've also seen Iyanla come out from that and tell the houseguest to start claiming their own responsibilities. I really believe that she will entertain this crap with this chick only so long....And yes, I do love good TeeVee..so thanks for the freak show!
Now....to the whole Boston thing. KILL ME!! I just watched the first 5 minutes of a 'wife swap' and they had a Boston Mom on who was HORRENDOUS and ignorant. Then there's 'Boston Rob'...you (as in reality shows casting folks) people are killing me! As someone who lives about 25 minutes from the city I can tell you that they ARE NOT a good representation of us patriots!!!
I pay for what I have, if I don't have the $$..I don't get to have it. I live in a nice home and I watch my three kids when we go out....(they'll tell ya, I'm 'mean'...lol) I do not feel entitled to anything I didn't work for...
Oh, and enough with the fake accents! I have never had a problem with pronouncing my 'R's'....and I don't know anyone who does...good grief....do they really think we're all Ted Kennedy???
and now, I will jump down from my 'tea' box.....

I loved the accent and thought it was very cute and I didnt think it was fake or sounded phoney. I think Antonia is a cute and young immature self-centered child. She has her life in a mess and needs to take a walk in the real world. It is people like Antonia who dont pay their bills that makes it hard on the rest of us. She needs some real life lesson's in the art of maturity and accepting responsibility for her past mistakes. She is way out there in her thoughts and ideas but I think she will keep all of entertained to the MAX. Cant wait to see what she is going to do next. It beats the heck out of watching the Jodi's and Chrisities' and Kelley's doesnt it?

I completely agree Juliejo. I find Antonia immaturity and youth to be a welcome breath of fresh air in the SO house. There's been so much crying lately that I usually fast forward through most of the episode, but I watched all of Antonia today. At least Antonia hasn't waited until she's in her late 30's to start trying to change her life like the rest of the housemates.

Again, Juliejo...I have to agree....I believe you're reading my mind and that doesn't happen everyday
.
Antonio's parents failed her, I'm not sure about her father alone as he introduced her to material things, but mom and grandmom are the people who primarily raised her according to her story and some of her " entitlement issues " stem from those around her who obviously were unsuccessful at giving her the fortitude to pay her own way... it isthe parents responsibility to instill in their child a sense of clarity about how to live within their means...that's why we have so many errant young adults making bad decisions in their lives today....because parents won't take the time to raise these children to be responsible adults. It's not an easy job (they give you grief all the way), but you have to prepare them for the world and not to be supported by the society they live in.
You're right,... she'll make for good entertainment...I just hope she learns from this experience.

Miss Antonia! Well alrighty then! hahahahaha...She made me laugh today! Ohhhh I think she's very real and seems to be very up front too. I'm glad Iyanla's her LC 'cuz I can't imagine Rhonda working with her...Lawd NO! I liked the fact that she asked IV questions if she wasn't understanding. Yes she put on her game face, but I could see the sadness peek through at times. She admittedly knows (when talking to her mom) it's not gonna be easy. Miss Antonia is gonna be real interesting...

OMG, she is totally unreal, superficial and shallow, shallow, shallow! When she was shopping with Iyanla and doing all the whining, I wanted to slap her!... and too pretty to ride a bus? That made her soo ugly. I have to comment on another post that is now locked, it said she was not a thief. I can't disagree more. While stuff happens and there are times that people CAN'T pay back loans/bils etc. She said she paid for a while and just stopped... she choose not to pay them and in my opinion that's stealing."Life's big problems include the words indictment or inoperable, the rest is small stuff"

BTW, I use to take the bus to KCMO downtown because it's ALOT cheaper than parking and there were several business execs, including the VP of a very large downtown bank who rode as well.

Why is IV her LC? Isn't it Rhonda's space that needs to be filled?
I find Antonia to be silly. She's immature.

I have to say, Antonia made me laugh through the whole episode because she is so over the top. That being said, IV needs to smack some sense into her.Did anyone else think it's pretty weird that the first thing Christie said to Antonia was "Wow, you're so beautiful!" That striks me as a really inappropriate thing to say to a stranger you just met. Christie really seems to think that by complimenting other women, she's "evolving", but it was just strange.

Shes a firecracker alright. All I have to say is thank goodness she isnt my daughter! She should be fun to watch though. What a shame Kelly is leaving, I think they would of had a little conflict. Oh well Christie is sure to fall into a great depression because now there are two pretty women there with great bodies taboot.

LAST EDITED ON 04-19-06 AT 07:26 PM (EST)Oh, this has to be staged...at least to some degree. It's not like I mind or anything, I laughed at Antonia's antics just like everyone else. I love the way she says, "Iyanla this" and "Iyanla that" when she's talking to her or asking a question. She's too flighty to show even a minimal amount of respect.
Iyanla should be able to reign this one in. Antonia is a perfect example of what the "believe and receive" attitude looks like when it's taken quite literally and is in overdrive: she believes she is a "rich spirit", not a thief. She doesn't want "dirty, old clothes", she needs to be wearing the fashion fresh designs available on Rodeo Drive. The bus is not worthy of Antonia in all her beauty and radiance, she needs to go clubbing in her car - at the very least a Gallant with a sunroof. "Speak to the universe, tell it what you need, throw ten requests out knowing one will come back, stand in your truth, believe it and receive it", etc. Somewhere in that doctrine handbook there must be a chapter on misusing your power, right? LOL
This is gonna be good...
PS: Cronemoon, don't worry...the one principal that does prove itself true more often than not is "you reap what you sow". It doesn't matter what Iyanla and the SO house may have in store for Antonia in terms of exercises and crafts. The truth remains that Antonia has already seriously damaged her credit - and she's barely out of the starting gate. A car repo is one of the worst things that a credit report can show (if the loan was large enough, it means the merchant probably took a loss on the deal because the vehicle depreciates so quickly). So, even if the SO house recommends bankruptcy, Antonia will either be living with the repo for seven years (until she's 31) or a not too easy to acquire bankruptcy for ten years (until she's 34). Unless the SO people have access to the 3 major credit reporting agencies' databanks, Antonia IS going to own this - for quite a while.

Antonia/Tess Tess/Antonia ........... perhaps these 2 are related. They fell off the same self centered/me/me/me/I'm the most important/beautiful/smartest person tree. Since SO is recycling previous houseguests what a great time to bring back Tess. The one upmanship Tess and Antonia could bring to the house would be worth watching. They could have a beauty fight and see which idiot comes out on top.Antonia has lots of growing up to do, her maturity level is about 1 on a 1-10 scale. Her entitlement issues geesh don't think the scale goes high enough. Iyanla is going to have her hands full, 4 weeks isn't going to be a drop in the bucket on this fool's life.
As for Christie, guess I don't get her beauty issues. She keeps telling us she is past the beauty runs my life and that she has grown as a person but she still puts very high marks on how someone 'looks'. Seems like that is judging a book by it's cover - if it is in a pretty package then it must be pretty. Christie some of the most beautiful people I know have inner, not outer, beauty. How disappointing to hear you say that to Antonia.

Doesnt matter to me if they are someone I just met, and I cant recall anyone thinking I was wrong in saying it. Why do women have a difficult time telling other women really nice things about themselves. it just makes me laugh.
Antonia is young, and obviously there are a few lessons she missed out on growing up. She really says some over the top things, but I like her I think. Hopefully she will mature a little bit while in the SO house.

She is not selfish or any of the other things you guys have said! Just my opinion, but let's not forget that Allison did have a pretty advanced stage of breast cancer and thus had to quit her job to get treatment, have another breast and her uterus removed, had an infection, etc and was unable to pay her bills. She's not our flaky Antonia just saying - EH, didn't feel like paying them...

This was all stated by her when she finally got backed into a cornor about her spending habits.....she had continued to spend as if she had a job and no cancer treatment bills.
For all:
As for Antonia...are the youngs adults these days that clueless or is she *playing* a part n hopes S.O. will pay off some her bills?
Teresa, first season, had to seel her inherited land to get out of debt (Which was, imho, the ONLY right way to take ownership of ones' debts) . The show had Teresa call each company she owned money to and see if they could settle on a lower amount. Then she sent checks to them plus after leaving the house she put ehr inherited land up for sale.
Allison claimed bankruptcy, well last we heard she was going to (Wrong, wrong, wrong way, imho).
Wonder what *scheme* they will come up with for Antonia tos ettle up her debts? I hope they go with Teresa's route....have her call each company she owes and see if they can settle on a lower amount and while in the house, as did Teresa, send some checks out for some of the settled amounts.
Also, as for blaming her Dad, well that's easy to do when the Dad isn't there to give his side. We have no idea what she was taught as she grew up. As we have foud in the past, when they bring on a Dad, it never was as nearly as bad as the houeguest ade them out to be. Case in point: PJ. Wow, did we find out differently about him when he came on the show compared to hw PJ had protrayed him.
So far I like Antonia BUT if most young adults are this clueless, what a future we have when they begin to run the states.

>What is the truth? You are right that we cannot know what is "real" from a one hour edited television program. But did Antonia not say that she is "too pretty to take the bus"? Did she not blame the _credit card companies_ because they had the audacity to send her applications for credit cards (because, after all, she is so important that every credit card company in the country "knows" her income and therefore "knows" that she doesn't have the money to pay back what she buys on credit). Iyanla was right...she is a thief if she knowingly buys on credit things that she cannot afford to pay for and when she decides that "life is too short" and why should I "stress myself out" by working and paying my debts. Sorry, dbarros, but her own words condemn her. I'm sure she is not a bad person and in fact I'm quite charmed by her although I loath her attitude and her sense of entitlement. She is anything but a "victim" in her current situation. I have a father who was not involved in my life, and who expressed his "love", in the early years, with material things. And I am now one of the most unmaterialistic people you will every hope to meet. It ain't all daddy's fault, and she needs to step up and take responsibility for herself and her actions. Once she does that, I for one will be her biggest supporter and cheerleader.

>like a real looker! She did come across pretty bad yesterday. And I know editors like to skew things but all they have to work with are the words that people say, and yesterday Antonia did say some pretty astonishing things. But today when they went through her bills she did admit that her situation was her own fault and that she needed to take responsibility for it. She also seemed grateful for the chance to meet with a well-known financial advisor and acknowledged that people pay thousands of dollars just for the chance to hear him speak. So maybe she is not as far gone as we might have been led to believe by the first impression. And as I said in my previous message, there is alot to like about Antonia, but the sense of entitlement is what really gets to me (and, in fairness to her, she did admit today that she does feel entitled, so hopefully she'll work on that!)
"RE: Antonia is unreal!!!!"

You mention she was raised primarily by her mother so why would Iyanla address father issues? An absent father is a father problem. A girl missing her Dad or with an unavailable father keeps trying to resolve her situation with her father with other men unless she's fixed the situation with her father. It's common for men to push away their daughters so it seems like everybody is healing that problem. Plenty of men tune out their daughters for a variety of reasons - not always intentional. Separations could be from divorce, cheating on the mom, addictions, working super long hours, or just being very uncomfortable with a growing teenager daughter. It's hard for many men to stay involved in a girl's life but it's such an important role for a father. Lots of fathers think it's the womens job to raise the daughters and just don't realize they are the first most important relationship for their daughters.
Iyanla seems to go pretty quickly from taking them from "acknowledge and heal it" to "own it". I think it's valuable for people to feel like they have their hurts acknowledged if only so they don't harbor resentments forever.
I don't think the mental gap about stealing is just an age gap. Irresponsibility takes all kinds. Lots of people think if they can get away with not paying something they charged on credit cards that the Big Bad Corporate Machine or The Other (Rich) People can just go ahead and pay it. Whether they use other people's credit card numbers, just let their credit cards go to collections, or declare bankruptcy because they just couldn't stop buying more more more clothes and manicures they didn't need it's irresponsible. If you are mature and realize that the money comes from other people then you realize you're making other people pay for stuff you kept - and you think it's theft. If you don't think of it that way then theft to you is stuffing the shirt in your bag and walking out the store.
I had someone use my credit cards, charge up stuff and tell me about these great things "she bought". It took me til I got the bills later that I noticed. It was easy to trace. I don't wear size zero pants and oh, she used her own name.
She acted like it was no big deal since the credit card company didn't charge me. To her it was "so what?". I was really hurt because she tried to steal from me, she snuck the credit cards out of my wallet in my sleep, and she had been my friend - before. She went on her merry way with her new phone and clothes. I was furious and very hurt. (she was about 30 y/o)

Good observations, Twinkles. The moral breakdown in our society certainly shows up in the number of bankruptcies these days. That's what happens when "truth" becomes relative. We moderns are so good at avoiding, even denying, absolute Truth. Antonia needs to work until she collapses in exhaustion. Then, when payday comes, she should get nothing and be told that someone else felt entitled to her money - so they took it. Big deal. What's all the fuss? Sorry, but I am so mad. I don't find her behavior at all "cute".
(P.S ... no, I'm not saying that ALL folks who declare B-ruptcy are thieves)

I'd like to know why she is hanging out in clubs when she can't afford it and when she refuses to pay her bills and take care of the debt that she knowingly incurred. She is extremely irresponsible, selfish and has entitlement issues. She feels what is hers is hers and what is yours is hers. She seems to expect everyone else to pay what she refuses to pay when she skips out on bills so she can have fun and enjoy life as she stated in group today. What a freeloader!

LAST EDITED ON 04-20-06 AT 09:58 AM (EST)I don't know exactly when this was taped but I would believe she's going to be subject to the new federal bankruptcy laws which don't account for being young, stupid, and entitled.
Lots of people fail to understand that the rest of us do pay in higher prices, fees, etc. when others don't pay. The credit companies and merchants don't just suck it up when people steal or default on payments. So when Jill shop lifted and Antonia defaults on payments people pay, it the rest of us who pick up the tab for idiots like them who feel entitled to have stuff they can't afford and are too lazy to work for. It isn't a victimless crime or sticking it to a big corporation. That corpoation is going to get that money from somewhere else and other people do pay for it with higher prices or costs.
Antonia is just one of many who feel she is entitled to have everything without working for anything.
Edited after watching today's episode:
I definitly think she came on thinking SO was going to help her write off her debts or negotiate with her creditors to get debt write off/consolidation/reduction and didn't really expect to have to do anything. I laughed when she told the debt expert she hated being told she had to reduce what she spent. I liked his comment about spending her money wisely and not wasting it. I do wonder if she'll complete his money making assignment or blow the cash on a spending spree. I did find IV's credit card bracelets funny and her reaction that IV was joking was right on cue. How many of these women so blindly accept wondering in pond scum without so much as a whimper.

She needs to come down to her level and man looking in her closet and at her stack of bills that is a very low level. She is young and she can change but she had better get real...quick. The meeting with Rich Dad-Poor Dad guy was interesting. I've seen him on PBS. She said (in a voice over, I think) about being rich that she wanted diamonds and pearls and she talked about "looking rich". Later she explained to Iyanla that she understood that being rich was spending money on the right things.I remember when it dawned on me that people who are rich are the ones who don't spend it. Yes, this was actually something that had to dawn on me. lol
Seems like a big step for Antonia to go right into the concepts of investing and thinking rich. As usual, she doesn't value working for a dollar and doesn't know how to keep $1 in her pocket. Now she's got an assignment to turn $100 into $500.
Maybe she can buy some art supplies and sell some dazzling artwork at the Farmers Market.

You know that was my first thought too about Christina's art. Meeting with a financial advisor is fine. How about meeting with gasp a JOB councilor to find out about getting a JOB. Shocking I know but if the child is $24,000 in debt with the interest growing while she's in SO I'm thinking waitressing at night since they have so much free time with nothing to do wouldn't be a bad idea to earn some money to start paying on those bills.

Exactly my feelings about the JOBS. And if they really wanted to help these women they'd require they hold some sort of JOB for a minimum of four hours a day. Or even volunteer work. SOMETHING besides laying around on their fat lazy butts gossiping, smoking, eating, napping, and god knows what else. I'm sure there would be businesses in the area that would hire them on a part-time temporary basis. Maybe like Curves or Jenny Craig, the local technical college, etc. These women are LAZY beyond belief and it's that I notice more than anything.
Antonia has already started looking just a loopy lazy as the rest of them, boy that didn't take long.

Did anyone see Oprah the other day? It was the exact same thing, a girl who felt entitled to buy stuff and was over a hundred thousand in debt... What is with the entitlement...She said she felt "pressured"... dont we all want stuff? The problem is people think there are no penalties. They should let people like Antonia go to the poorhouse, we all have debts and we pay them off, even if it means taking the "bus" and maybe even working at a "restaurant". I am surprised Antonia isnt a drinker, smoker, drug user, she seems into instant gratification... I have nothing against her personaly, I think she must have gotten it from her parents..

I've heard the advice of this guy and I understand people are better off financially if they are investors or business owners. Tax and income-wise the worker-bee is the bottom of the totem pole.Does the investment counselor realize, though, that Antonia is in Day 1 of trying to get out of denial of her debts? I think his usual audience are WORKING people in normal jobs who ARE PAYING minimums on their credit cards, not people who ignore them entirely then go out dancing for the night.
But what gets me is that you have to start somewhere with some motivation. He handed her the $100. I'd like an exercise where she takes her own money and risks it to see what she can do with it. That's a whole different feeling. Hasn't she spent enough of other people's $?
I'm also with you folks who are concerned that she's going to just get some handouts from the SO house. It's happened before. -You need to earn $100 by the end of the day. - You earned $90 - Close enough, here's $10 so we can call it earning $100. -Here's your graduation present: the rest of the $1500 you need, you earning it...(wha???) -

Too pretty to ride the bus? That has to be just an expression that means she thinks she's really beautiful and classy, right? Because honestly, she looks just like thousands of people who ride the bus everyday. She fits right in. I probably wouldn't notice her.

My favorite part of today's show:Antonia - (Answering the door)
Iyanla - Hi, what's wit yer hair?
Antonia - This is my free look.
Iyanla - Free? Free from what, a comb?
I thought it was rude and mean spirited, especially with the look on Iyanlas face after she said it. But it was still funny, even more so because it was arrogant Antonia.

Hi Zoey...whether it was mean and rude shouldn't matter, that's what's wrong with Antonia now, "noone has bothered to tell her the truth"...it wasn't cute and Iyanla let her know that..it was hilarious (IMO)
**edited to add** She reminds me of Alicia Keys...they could almost pass for twins...except the attitude and they're both soo inner city it seems.

Iyanla reminds me of the type of women who use to be in the neighborhood...who often gave out wise advice to young wayward girls when their moms couldn't reach them...she was the one spirit you listened to and took their advice because you knew they had your best interest at heart (you know the worldly woman who'd made her mistakes and could put you on the right path after seeing you start to take the wrong road)... her power is very real .
Your warning is on target...this generation you speak feels extremely entitled...as I said, earlier...their parents have failed them...they haven't prepared them to become responsinle human beings and it's really going to cost them in the end.

That would make her too much of a child to me, and Antoinia is not a child. She's a young woman who has made some very irresponsible choices. So no I don't think that was the case at all.
I'm glad that Iyanla is her life coach, because Iyanla sees the big picture. Antonia doesn't. Odds are one day Antonia's gonna be a wife & mother. IMO It's not just about material things and the good life. It's about what kind of woman does she really want to be in this world? So I'm looking forward to watching the two of them.

So far, this "storyline" about Antonia's finances just illustrates how SO/Iyanla has no consistency or integrity. How can Iyanla "deliver her lines" with a straight face? Isn't she embarrassed to tell Antonia with absolute authority, "You are a thief if you don't pay your bills" after helping Allison Stanley "steal" on a larger scale? At least some of 24 year old Antonia's $24,000 debt involves student loans...39 year old Allison racked up $35,000+ debt buying atrocious outfits and junk jewelry, and clown makeup and, oh, I forgot, spices and a pencil can. (It's been well established that the vast majority of Allison's debt came from careless spending rather than medical expenses.) Antonia needs to learn to live within her means, but Iyanla told Allison that her problem was that she just wasn't livin' large enough. Allison, dream BIG!! Ask the Universe for a job where you make gobs of money working only 3 days out of the week! Ask the Universe for what you want! Don't be a sucker workin' hard like everyone else. You are entitled! Keep spendin' Allison...you need a new peasant top every two hours or so. What changed, Iyanla? I mean, besides the bankruptcy laws.

Hey, give Allison a break! You may laugh now, but clown make-up isn't something you can just pick up at the drug store - that stuff is professional and it's expensive - especially in industrial drums. And can anyone really have enough pencil cans?

I think it will be interesting because she is the first guest in a long time who hasn't blindly followed IV's instructions or attempted to get help or stop an activity behind IV's back (like Jill with the suit cases). I laughed so hard when she challenged IV on those stupid bracelets. It will be interesting to see if after having so many zombies as clients who would jump in the swamp what this child will do when IV makes those demands of her.

Antonia is indeed a spitfire...she missed her lesson on tact...she's extremely "honest to a fault" and I'm not sure whether it will hinder her progress or help it. She's definitely got a lot to learn about people....I see something in her that has been misguided, but she's seems open to the help she came to SO for and hopefully, Iyanla will be the best person to help her gain a foothole on her life before it gets any worse than it already is.

We need the just say No campaign to entitlement like we started with Drugs. No just because you see it on TV, your friends have it, etc. it doesn't mean you are entitled to have it unless you earn it with the work of your own hands.
Antonia actually is not that far out there for her generation. She is all too "real" for people who believe that somehow they are above having to work for what they want. IV needs to correct that attitude although she has never done so with Christine or Allison.

I would LOVE to see SO skip the silly swamps, massive wall charts, random phone calls to lost relatives and have Antonia simplyGET A JOB and follow through with showing up on time and keeping it.
Then make a budget and STICK TO IT. Feel what it takes to work several hours for that Lobster Roll and then decide if it is worth spending your OWN money on it.

I'm not even sure if a lot of them have figured out that they will have to pay for what they NEED.
Courtesy of Mom and Dad, today's middle-class kids have access to a lot of goodies. Home computers, laptops, internet, I-Pods, cell-phones, portable DVD players, 1000 channels on the cable or satellite..there's a lot of technology to be purchased. The problem is, how are these young people going to pay for all of this stuff when they need to pay the utility bill or the rent? It won't be a problem for the entire generation, but it will be for a lot of them.
Antonia may be more typical than we would like to believe. Can you imagine starting out with so much against you? And the ironic thing is that she did it to herself! The woman can't even rent an apartment!
I've often wondered why there isn't a required course for all highschool seniors that would address these issues in depth: credit card company reps on college campuses, unsolicited credit cards in the mail, interest rates, finance charges, what wage garnishments and repossessions are, the three major credit reporting agencies, getting a copy of a credit report, interpreting a credit score, and how that score will affect every major purchasing decision of their lives.
I have nothing against a study hall, but wouldn't this be more useful? Antonia's position is bad for everyone.

Well you can thank no child left behind and the thousands of hours put into testing not teaching as to why there is no financial basics course in high school. We're so busy teaching to the tests and taking the tests we've cut out anythign not tested. If we'd actually put some practical things back in education and take out some time devoted to beating kids over the head about tests on information they don't use when they leave high school we might make life more practical. Wouldn't it make sense if we tested kids on real math as in financial math, and reading that was based on their rights and responsiblitites as citizens of the US? Ah well I digress. As for Antonia I loved it today when she was getting charged for everything and had no idea what she was spending and just assumed everyone would do for her for free, especially when she expected Jodi to make the bed and Niambia to do her nails. This spending thing is the first IV exercise I've actually liked.

Thanks SR & Baxtera for the insightful posts! Sadly, I think there are A TON of Antonia's out there. I don't think she's a bad person.I just think that she lacks money management skills and impulse control. And Seasoned I agree 100% that personal money management, credit and how to handle it responsibly should be a part of every high school Seniors Economics course. And it should be A BIG PART. They should be required to go home and get an accounting of every monthly bill their parent has to pay.And they should do mock budgets for what their expenses will be when they are out on their own. I think they can be supplied with the information on money management but then they have to have the maturity to apply it and the parent has to step in.Financial problems can be very difficult to undo.I think it is within Iyanla's capabilities to help Antonia. But she is going to have to have a willingness to do what it takes and I'm not sure she has that. She has some VERY BAD spending habits and she may end up learning these lessons the HARD WAY.

What is with the entitlement...Someone asked? That is what a lot of young kids think today. Because they have grown up having everything handed to them. They feel if they see it on TV or someone else has it they should have it too. They are entitiled.....Parents do kids no favors if they spoil them and lead them to believe that they are entitiled to have whatever they DESIRE. Antonia has no concept of what money management or savings skills are. She has a credit card and she spends. She takes no resposnibltiy for her part in spending herself into debt. She also has nothing to show for it. She showed Iguana her closet which held a few meger things and said she had no idea what she did with what she had. She liked to throw things away is what I recall her saying. But she is funny and a breath of fresh air in a very stagnat SO house. When she answered the door to Iguana with her hair all wild and all over the place and Iguana said did you lose your comb, I fell out of my chair. Antonia just blew it off and I think that is probably what she will do in the SO house, blow it all off. But she will be fun to watch. I missed my laugh for the day when Lisa1 left but Antonia will keep me laughing as she doesnt have a clue. This is better than the movie Clueless because this is for real.

When you think about a lot of the houseguests they all have felt the "entitlement" in some way or another. Allison had her credit card issues, so did Lisa, the wieght issues too and alcohol-Jill and Jodie have been mad when other people could eat and they couldnt, Christie mad that other can drink an she cant. Its the inability to take resonsability for your own actions. I love it when they call all those things "diseases" I eat, spend too much because I have a disease, Bullshit. Its apathy.

My problem with Antonia isn't so much that she's a brat, which she is-- but why is she IN the SO house??? She clearly DOESN'T CARE that she's in trouble. So let her stay that way. I'm starting to think she doesn't even believe half the stuff she says. She's full of it. When she got the $630 from Iyanla, she was complaining to make a show for the cameras. She probably has one dime and a quarter in her pocket, she was just bummed the money wasn't real.
I would really like Iyanla to just "lay into her" instead of the teasing, light hearted jabs at her lifestyle and attitude.

Hi Omniscia...I believe that Iyanla may be approaching Antonia's problem much like she does...from a sense of carefreeness that she can relate to.
Antonia treats her debt as if it's no big thing and this seems to me, to be a way to teach her that everything has a "cost" attached...something, this young woman has no "clue" about (living expenses...necessities vs luxuries)...and It's sad to say this is why most young adults fail at an attempt to live on their own...they haven't been prepared for a "sound financial life".

She probably has one dime and a quarter in her pocket, she was just bummed the money wasn't real."Omniscia ~ I'm thinking along the same lines as you. I think Antonia is a spoiled entitled brat that thinks she's the cutest thing that has hit the planet so emphasized her "drama" to get selected for SO. I get the feeling she is one of those that was looking for her 15 minutes from a reality show because afterall, everyone will adore her ... "I'm just so cute and funny. I'll be THE one that brings in soooo many viewers. The show will come back to life because of M-E!" ... a la SpitUpLisa. And like Lisa, she will have to continually play her role. Don't get me wrong, I thought Lisa was as much of an idiot as she portrayed, she just acted it up for the cameras. She too thought she'd come across as so cute & funny. Lisa's problem was, she wasn't smart enough to have thought through her "character" development after she got on the show.
That being said, Antonia's underlying issue is, sadly, representative of much of this young adult entitled, have-it-all generation. My daughter is close in age to Antonia. I see it every day. It IS fun to give our kids stuff but the minute we'd see even the slightest signs of entitlement we'd quickly put the brakes on.
I'm old enough that we DID have a HS course similar to the one SR's suggested: >>>"a required course for all highschool seniors that would address these issues in depth: credit card company reps on college campuses, unsolicited credit cards in the mail, interest rates, finance charges, ..."<<< It was also a part of a Business Economics course in college. Then again, as Baxtera said ... they don't have that on the standardized testing so no time to teach it. The test for that comes, not as one final exam, but as a way of life that can eat you alive and follow you the rest of your life!
I've seen it just as bad in college graduates who DO get a job but don't have a concept of "after tax income" and that the entirety of their check isn't available for fun, clothes, and entertainment! Somehow, they think their rent, utilities, food, & car payment (for that cute little sports car they went out and purchased on credit the day they found out they had a job) are going to magically be covered! They honestly feel they had to work sooo hard in college that for the rest of their life the "universe" owes them all-fun all-things all the time. I put myself thru college, worked several jobs, and still found that the easiest and most fun part.
Have we as parents failed to teach our children that awesome feeling of working HARD for something and succeeding? Of the inner sense of satisfaction of achieving something that we have to struggle for? You want self-esteem ... THAT'S where you can find boat loads of it. Feeding your ego does NOT increase self-esteem! Self esteem comes ONLY from inside yourself. Fun, acquiring things, acting important, "stardom", etc. are strictly ego-feeding. And feed the ego and you are feeding a huge monster that just continues to get bigger & need more "feeding". Build your self esteem with hard work, accomplishments, etc. and you don't need to constantly feed the ego monster.
OK, back down from the soap box!!!!!

I have to agree with you. When I was in college (back when there were still dinosaurs) the credit card companies didn't just send you applications, they paid people to set up tables and stop you walking into the student union and offer to help you apply along with a "gift" or two (usually a coffee mug or water bottle etc.). I did get one credit card in college, but I probably could have gotten 4 or 5 more. I was putting myself through college and didn't have a dime to spare (Top Ramen and baked potatoes were the usual dinner fare) but being in college somehow made me an attractive credit risk. When I graduated, I owed about $500 on my credit card. I was so ashamed because I couldn't pay off my balance at one time. I viewed that almost as stealing because I bought beyond my means. I paid off this debt the second I could. I guess some people view credit cards not as a debt that must some day be repaid, but as "free money" and therefore get as many as they can. Wierd thinking, in my opinion

Will she go along with the way things are:
Pooling the money
Or
Will she want her share of the money and then eat the food others bought?
Would make for drama since it seems Jodi and Christie have a monopoly on the food: They seem to be eating all the time.

OK, I fell down laughing when Antonia said that she was "Too pretty to ride the bus," because, in my trade? That's slang for "ambulance." I stopped for a minute, and had to realize she meant public transportation. I laughed at myself, yes, and her! Can you imagine someone believing they are too pretty to be in the back of an ambulance??! Hopefully, Antonia won't need one, though--they are expensive rides. She probably can't afford either "bus" and that isn't about whether or not she's "pretty." She really IS too much.

Even though she only completed ONE year at Virginia Wesleayn College (and from her attitude i can understand WHY), I hate knowing that some people will now associate my college with HER and her selfish, egotistical, irresponsible attitude! You also don't have to wonder what's on her mind, because she's also very vocal. Nice change I must say, and not at all boring.

Hey guys, did I miss something? Didn't Robert Kiyosaki, the author of Rich Dad, Poor Dad hand Antonia a $100 bill and give her an assignment that involved turning that $100 into $500 within a certain amount of time?Has the time limit expired? Was the assignment ever addressed again, or did it just go by the wayside? Anyone know anything?
PS: I'm not sure I get the point of the exercise. Is it to show Antonia that she is financially clueless?

I love watching Antonia too. I was just like that as I was growing up, spoiled, no idea of the value of money, and no idea of how to deal with bills. I think lots of young people are like that. I died laughing at her when she fell on the floor after finding out she had to pay for the massage. She's a trip.
