Mordal was the funniest guy on the show. There's no accounting for taste.
Thanks god there's someone here that make sense.. DAT PHAN IS NOT FUNNY!!!! There's no way america voted for Dat Phan!!
I've stated before that I didn't think Dat was funny and why. He is probably the most appealing to the network "minds" in terms of a package though.I would find it disappointing if I really thought Dat had received a true majority of votes. Did anyone else read the rules posted on the official Last Comic Standing site? I seem to remember something about them having the right to toss out votes.
I think the show started strong, but towards the end I was disappointed. This could have been a cool show had it been about people who are good comics. Instead I feel like I have been watching the creation of the Monkees or Frankenstein.
Dat has had his day, tomorrow he will have his night on Leno. After that we will see. I really don't think he will last because he just isn't funny.
Starting the clock...Dat's 15 minutes start...NOW.

In the beginning I liked this show a lot and had a lot of hopes for it. But last night was SUCH a major disappointment. You could almost feel that Dat was set up for the win just because he got soooo much face time on the opening episode and they milked the hell out of the poor kid schtick. And, did you notice that Dat started out being from Santee, but after he won his first face off he was from San Diego? Sounds like they were setting up a win for him.Since I don't watch sitcoms, I won't be missing him IF anything ever comes of his deal. How many of these things actually come to fruition anyway?
Sad thing is, I liked Dat initially and even thought he was funny (in small doses). But the more the show progressed, the less funny he got. It's like the producers were bludgeoning the viewers with him in order to get the sympathy vote.
all morning i have been searching for a message board that has people who feel the same way that i do. i was outraged last night at the outcome. dave mordal was by far the funniest comic on the show. when he was eliminated by dat, i was shocked that the people in the audience would chose to vote for someone that did the same joke for 10 minutes as opposed to someone who was original and funny.
i think everyone is going to get sick of dat phan very quickly. you can't have a career based on one joke.....
I completely agree with you and was astounded by the voting. What is wrong with America????!!!!!!!. I didn't laugh once at him or at his "one joke".... It definitely got old way before this show was even over! It's really just a shame.
All you guys seem to be in love with Dave Mordal!! What!! He is old and boring and you could not pry a word out of his mouth last night. People like him think that they can just sit there and things will happen for them. At least Dat realized he had to put his heart and soul into the competition and that is just what he did. Mordal did not crack any good jokes - his face is funny and that is about it. Voss is better even though he gets so nervous that it gets uncomfortable. I think in your hatred of Dat, your love for Mordal has multiplied. Please - remember his pitch for a comedy show - what the hell was that!!
Are you kidding me??? I don't mean to bash but you have to be a moron to not think he is funny. Maybe you just don't understand his humor. He is hilarious!!!! Dhat is only funny maybe the first time you hear him but he gets old quick. Dave and Ralphie are so quick witted you could through anything at them and they would come back with something comical to say, unlike Dhat who has to think up his jokes and has no quick humor to anything.
i agree. i mean, he wasn't funny last night? so what? he wasn't doing stand-up last night. he was sitting around in an uncomfortable situation answering silly questions. plus, if i were him, i'm sure i wouldn't be the happiest sitting there the only one in the coalition not in the top 5 because i was beat out by someone talking about their mother for 10 minutes. the funniest thing dat said all night was "when you get that first laugh, its like reaching out and touching God". i'm sure that wasn't intentionally funny though.
My point exactly!! When did Dave do stand-up? Just that one time when 75% of the audience voted for Dat. Just because someone has a stone-faced, stupid expression doesn't mean he is good. Dave has been in the business for so many years and still he gets pumelled by Dat, a guy who has only been doing this for two years. This is a sign for Dave to retire and spend more time with his family - he is a washed up comic and his standing on the show proved that. Can't wait to see Dat on Leno tonight - don't miss it guys - it should be good!!
personally i'm baffled, shocked and appauled that 75% of the vote went to dat that night. should have been 0. dave was by far funnier and more original. watch leno tonight? i'd rather sit on a very large very sharp object.
Actually, we saw Dave do two routines. He did the short one in the semis and the one against Dat. And he actually did TWO DIFFERENT routines, unlike Dat, who did his d@mn mother impression EVERY FREAKIN' TIME! In the words of the immortal Butthead: "He sucks more than anything has ever sucked before."
Dave did his stuff through the whole show. I agree he didn't do much last night but it wasn't his night to shine. I think the only reason dat beat him is because it was a younger crowd more into seeing a lot of movement on stage and lets face it an Asian accent is just an easy laugh. Daves routine was better. Watch Dat tonight on Leno, no thanks I've already seen his routine enough. Like I said it was funny once but it grows old quick.
Dave was original, funny, writes well and is clever. Was he boring last night, of course he was. Jay Mohr was inspid, cruel and trying to start something between the contestants for the "benefit" of the audience. I didn't think any of the others cooperated with Jay either. Congrats to all for not rising to the obvious bait.Personally I can't see how Dat ever beat Dave, though Dave did have an off set. However, Dave's off night is still better than Dat's best night.
I am offended by the remarks about Dave's physical appearance. I haven't read anything anyone has written tearing apart the physical appearance of anyone else on the show. What I have read is comments about talent, material and presentation. Those are valid comments.
I am sorry that Dat won against Dave -against anyone for that matter. I don't think he won because he was good. He had the better back story and is young, cute and a minority. Dat makes a great network, underdog package. Too bad he isn't funny, after the first joke.
Dat could be Chicano, Arab, Eastern Indian or anything else and I wouldn't care. Funny voices aren't enough for me. How about some substance? I think that is the point that many have made when they refer to Dat's lack of material. As for Dave being washed up, hardly. Let's check back same time next year and see whose career is going well and who is lving under a desk again.
Watch Dat on Leno? I'd rather chew on ground glass.
Well, I interpreted his being an Asian comic as breaking the stereotype. The stereotypes would be what his mother wanted for him to do. But I have to agree that he needs new material NOW!I thought Dave Mordal's was the best idea for a show, too. That would be a funny show. He should pitch it to another network.
ROFL at the counter. Normally, the counter indicates how many visitors, but according to his counter, it's the number of times he's had to explain he and Rich are not gay. Or at least he's not.

thank you, surreality
finally a voice of reason in a sea of insipid whinings..oh my WORD! how can these people NOT see the genius of dave?
the dry, sardonic humor..the wry yet pointed jabs during conversation....and comedic sets that were ORIGINAL and NOT repeated ad nauseum!every other comedian had a "shtick" of humor that once seen is not needed to be seen again...(esp. on the tonight show..how i groaned!)
dat=annoying asian pigeon accents and mother mocking humor
tess="beautiful" big black woman jokes
geoff=black hetro man jokes
ralphie=big wishes he were black ("da hood?)man +i gotta give him "props" when he saw the "jig" was up and how the wind was blowing he threw in controversial harder edged material i mean, what the hell...couldn't hurt, eh?
corEy="i've got a teenage daughter" jokes
rich=less shtick than all the others but still parent type jokes
but
DAVE...ahhh dave!
dry observances and revelations about his past, twisted ironically and with perfect timing to be appealing, thought provoking ("and i turned up the volume of the radio") as well as very very funny.....but alas, he was not the "poster boy" easily petted golden boy of the NBC execs who look for marketing flash...versus solid substance....i so much enjoyed that show....up to the end..but it was the most disapointing end to a sesion that i doubt i shall watch again...
and no, i really don't think it was fixed.. i think that america is stooopid, and got sucked into by the "hearts, rainbows, tears, GOD-talk" from an engaging young man...i SO cringed when dat man said "i hope the winner of this is ....a "good person"
PUH-LEAZE!!!!! <sigh> i guess enough americans who are not comic savvy bought into that syrupy maudlin drivvel to first vote dave off then make dat fool the winner!
how terribly SAD!
ahh me....
I have actually seen Dave numerous times live before this show was ever on. He is a local and I find him to be extremely funny. I do however concede the fact that not everyone will appreciate his humor. Much of it is location dependant and can be hard to understand by people who do not live in the Midwest...
I have seen Rich live too. While I found him to be pretty dull in his stand-up on the show he was great live. He actually works quite blue so that hurt the fact that all his good stuff couldn't be used.
Dave, Rich and Ralphie would have been my final three. I didnt like the women especially the one talking about pantylines. Dave and Ralphie would be my two and a winner is close.Scott
Dat Phan winning Last Comic Standing proves how unintelligent the American pubic is. He is the least funny comedian I have ever seen perform. I must also agree that Dave Mordal was absolutely wonderful. His humor was full of intelligent and ironic punch lines; Dat Phan stuck with "pee" jokes and imitations on his ethnic family, which never really made sense. There truly is no way Dat Phan could have won if professionals made the decisions. All of the Chinese-American population must have voted to give Dat any chance in hell!
>Dat Phan winning Last Comic Standing
>proves how unintelligent the American
>pubic is.>All of the Chinese-American population
>must have voted to give
>Dat any chance in hell!Um, wouldn't be commenting on the country's intelligence: I don't think America has a pubic region. ;) And Dat Phan is Vietnamese.

> There
>truly is no way Dat
>Phan could have won if
>professionals made the decisions.Oh, such is true of many things. Were talented singers the only ones given record deals, Britney Spears wouldn't be a millionaire. Were only talented children allowed to star in sitcoms, I wouldn't be jealous of the Olsen twins. Were only talented individuals given the chance to star in a major motion picture, teens wouldn't go to bed dreaming of Cameron Diaz. Bottom line is that in the entertainment industry, it's all about making the quick buck.
I was a big supporter of Dat and was happy he won the show. But after his pathetic performance on Leno, I agree with most of you that the vote may have been rigged and that Dave Mordal, Cory and Rich would have been so much better. Dat Phan really sucks with his repetitive garbage - he is as fresh as stale beer. Just go away Dat and be happy with your 15 minutes - you have even made a fan like me say "Oh no. Not that f------ schtick all over again."
Agreed. I liked the guy, but since the entire country has seen his acts, he needed to use some new material. Let's hope that he's just saving his new stuff for his show...
Hee hee. I just had to reply to this thread so I could see Dat Phan is not funny one more time..
Well, I just have to vent. The first thought that came into my head this morning was, I can’t believe Dat won. I agree that NBC was manipulating the show to make Dat the underdog. But then again, what can you expect from network t.v.?
Dat Phan is about as funny as a sharp stick in the eye. I found myself comparing Dat to Margaret Cho as I see some other ‘posters’ have. Not just because they both fall into the Asian category, but his reliance on his mother as a topic. Cho has used this quite well, not just point out the subtle nuances of English that her mother misses, but her neurotic qualities (those that all mothers possess regardless of ethnicity) as well. Remember the bit about the phone message reminding Cho that “Grandma and Grandpa are going to die!!”? Dat tapped into this sort of thing, but fell flat. He lacks an original insight into the world, which will prevent him from being a great comic. Rich, Cory, Dave, Ralphie…all of them have that potential.
Dat does not seem to enjoy himself on stage, but appears as though he is in a race to get the jokes out as quickly as possible so he can get off the stage. As he admitted, he wants to be a sitcom star. The stand-up is just a means to an end for him. Hopefully he will get his crappy show and quickly get canceled. Or maybe he will prove to be an entertaining sit-com actor. I predict he will fade fast only to turn up later hocking long distance service. This show started off so great. I love stand up and it was cool to see a reality show with people who were funny and had a sense of humor about themselves. Oh well…This ran a bit long and seems a wee-bit self-indulgent. Aww, I bet Dat could appreciate that (meow). But I dont suppose anyone is reading it anyway.
P.S. Rob Cantrell, if you are out there, I loved the bit about the semi-colon!
I went to the Comedy Store in La Jolla Sunday. Sunday is an open mike night. I see a very small person acting extremely strange. Cleaning off a table, making sure the chairs are straight and even with the stage, reading over a set lists of jokes. Normally, I would think that this was a neurotic comic trying to get a job as a waiter. I quickly realized that it was no one other than our friend Dat Phan. He went up and did about 10 minutes of very unfunny material. The majority being about growing up as a kid in the 80's. The funniest bit was he questioned why any kid would want to drink kool-aid that came from the head of a giant pitcher that just busted through a brick wall. But enough about that, this thread is called DAT PHAN IS NOT FUNNY. Believe me, he wasn't. It was all-new material and he only referenced his mother twice but just wasn't working for him, I would love to see his notebook for that terrible performance. Good luck on your Comedy Central Special Dat, you suck!
Sorry this is so late but I have just been searching since season 2 was announced. That Kool-Aid man joke you thought was funny...well, he stole it from a very funny comedian named Dane Cook.
I totally agree that Dave Mordal was the best! I've been stalking him (not physically of course) ever since his debut on the show last year. His new website photo has him looking totally hollywood now, which is a little sad, but he is the most original, most natural talent to come out of the first season.
