"Did Gabriel forfeit?"

So you're in front of a camera operator who's filming you at all times and your hands are busy working on something underneath a pillow. What did Gabriel think his watcher was going to believe he was up to, and was there any real chance it would be rated R or lower? All due credit for smuggling the Crackberry in, but trying to use it when you're being watched pretty much twenty-four seven? Right. Sure. Bathroom times should be safe, and maybe you can steal a few seconds here and there when the cameras are focused somewhere else, but more or less openly using the thing? That's either someone seriously addicted to contact or a person who's decided they're leaving anyway, so let's find an excuse.

And then, just to leave no doubt about where the strings are attached, he gets up in the middle of the night, sneaks off -- while still under camera surveillance -- to make a phone call, and admits when he gets back. Just in case the camera wasn't looking. You'd swear Gabriel's girlfriend could produce her own twelve-step program.

Was he tripped up by his own need to talk to someone -- or did he decide he couldn't go any further (or didn't need to) and left on his own terms?

Seems to me he just couldn't follow the rules. The producer mentioned he had broken several rules. Perhaps he got complacent.

The editing of him being caught using his blackberry was pretty lame.

Very interesting questions. From what the other comics were saying, Gabriel would appear to be fairly established. I didn't really see him going home anytime soon as he seems to be one of the funnier guys. It must have been the nookie.

Why are people calling it a "crack"berry? Am I missing something?

I really think he's seriously in love with this girl, and probably wanted more than success on the show to be with her.

And I guess unlike jail, the comics aren't subject to a strip search upon entering the house/ship. But I would imagine the producers/staff search their belongings, at least for safety reasons.
I'm just curious as to how easy it is to smuggle something like that in.

There is a fairly standard joke that for some people their blackberry is as addictive as crack.

It's called a Crackberry because it's considered to be slightly more addictive than rock cocaine.

The difficulty of smuggling depends on the show. It's just about impossible for Survivor, and works down from there. It's especially hard on any show with your basic 24/7 camera coverage, because even if you get the item in, you'll want to use it eventually -- and you'll probably have to do so in full sight. About the best you can hope for is to either find a loophole, or get the item in and then challenge that its presence and use are legal.

Luggage might have been checked, but they also might have put the comics on the honor system, asking them to turn over all cell phones and communications devices. If so, silly producers...

Cannot resist temptation to make a Garbriel Roast Fat Joke here: obviously he smuggled it on board in his navel.

Perhaps I'm naive, but I was under the impression he just wanted to communicate with his girlfriend.

...and how he got caught with the thing under a pillow in a common area makes it look like he maybe wanted to be caught. The question is he just so out-of-control in love or addicted to either the girl or the crackberry that he could not control himself at all and had to do it in public where he would be caught (the cry for help type of error) or was he done with the competition (the whole hat thing feels very someone who isn't into playing the game aspect of it) and this was just an easy out. That way you don't have to say you are quitting, you get them to force the issue and kick you out.

Yes, Love-sick...that's what I was thinking... that or he thought even if he got caught they wouldn't kick him off...in which case, you're right...he's made it this far and gotten the exposure.

I wonder if LCS contestants turn down the prize(s) at the end...like Project Runway's Jay... they may be able to more branching out on their own rather than being stuck in a contract with only one network. (?) Time will tell...maybe!

Leave us not forget what Gabriel did achieve with this whole escapade.

Lots of exposure.
Folks talking about him.

So he doesn't win the competition. I'm sure he found several offers on that crackberry before he hit the buffet. (Well, maybe not quite before)
