"Will The Price Be Right After Bob?"

Posted by Cygnus X1 on 01-28-07 at 11:42 PM
I guess pretty much everyone knows by now that Bob Barker is leaving The Price Is Right as of this June. I haven't seen a link for this, but apparently CBS bought out the section of Barker's contract wherein the show went with him when he left.

So who should be his successor? Only one whose name I've heard tossed about is CBS Early Show (and TAR contestant for a leg, sort of) Dave Price. Will he get it just because of his name? Can ANYone fill Bob's shoes? Who will tell folks to spay and neuter their pets? Who will get the sexual harassment lawsuits from the onstage babes?

Or is CBS moronic to continue the show post-Bob?

There were Price of Right hosts before Bob and there will be Price of Right hosts after Bob. Same with the announcers who keep dying.

Not really, Puffy (you former TPIR contestant, you!); with a few insignificant exceptions, Bob has been the only host of this iteration of TPIR, although it's not the original that was hosted by the legendary Bill Cullen. Wikipedia has the details.

And yep, there has been transition in the ranks of TPIR announcers: Johnny ("A New Car!") Olsen died and was replaced by the late Rod Roddy. Now, Rich Fields has the pipes.

But I do hope you're right. Rolf Benirschke need not apply.

Rod Roddy provided the voice for the TPIR slot machine game.

Dennis James hosted the nighttime Price Is Right when Bob Barker started the daytime version.

It's like asking if the Yankees would be all right after Babe Ruth left. Sure, it's possible -- but you'd better have Mickey Mantle waiting in the wings.

I've heard Rosie O'Donnell had a clause written in her The View contract that if they were to ask her to host Price is Right, she can leave the View to do it.

*giggle fit*

Can't argue. One of the prime requirements for a game show host is the ability to project the control aura: everything's fine, all is calm, and I can take this wherever it needs to be. Rosie's just a little bit lacking in that department.

Of course there's always that unstoppable TV goto guy, Bob Saget. Lord knows he could do worse (and has).

No one can replace Bob . No one could replace Lucy, either.

That being said, I'd like to see Richard Karnes (from Home Improvement) try it out. I liked it when he was hosting Family Feud. I imagine that The Price is Right CAN morph into the current times, but it's not going to be an easy transition.
Heck, who would rather have it replaced by a monkey picking metal briefcases?* (/rhetorical question )

Well, and there's always Eric Estrada. Or maybe Danny Bonaduce. But Ricardo Montalban would be fantastic! "You do not have the luxury of trying."

Eric: busy selling cr@ppy parcels of land where no one wants to live. At least not for long.

Danny: who?

Ricardo: anyone who creates the Genesis Planet and brings back Spock is OK in my book.

So what if he killed him in the first place? He obviously didn't mean it.

Aaaaargh. Impressive!

Whats-His-Face has fallen into the black hole that has taken over 49% of my brain. If I could only push a few more Jericho type shows things in, I'd free up some disk space.

"The short list"
Posted by Cygnus X1 on 04-10-07 at 02:00 PM
According to the Hollywood Reporter, these are the finalists:

  • Mark Steines, cohost of "Entertainment Tonight." I have NO idea who that is. (/Homer)
  • George Hamilton. I thought they were looking for someone *younger* than Bob?
  • Mario Lopez. What, Dustin Diamond was too busy doing porn videos?

Jorge Sedano of Fox Sports Radio is lobbying for Arsenio Hall. He'd be an improvement over this lot.

No more moronic than Jeopardy post-Fleming.

(Dating myself. ART FLEMING, for heck's sake. He hosted the show for about 90 years).

Ah, I remember the Art Fleming/Don Pardo years. With the curtain, the hand-pulled answers, and the values ranging only from $10-50 and $20-100. And Art wasn't anywhere near as sanctimonious as Alex.

And as I wrote this, I even remembered the old Who, What, and Where Game. That dates me a bit!

I remember the name Who, What and Where game, but I don't remember the actual show. I loved to watch those old games shows with my grandmother. Merv Griffin hosted Play Your Hunch back in the old days, too.

I like Richard Karnes for this too...he's calm and sweet. The contestants are hyper enough, they need someone who can reign it all in...

Rosie OhFatmouth, Bob's preference as a succesor? Why not Star Jones? Ol' Bob must really want this tottering turkey to go straight to hell. If he means this, I hope some new meds can help him recover the major portion of his brain that had croaked.

Worry not, Foon: Rosie's out, although she says she auditioned (someone PLEASE burn that tape!). So too is The Four-Letter's Dan Patrick, whom I never realized was in the running to begin with.

Now also in consideration: Family Feud host John O'Hurley and The Singing Bee host Joey Fatone.

To me, the fact that CBS has taken all this time and still has no new host says it's not happy with the crop of candidates.

Well, we wouldn't want to stunt Joey's creative growth, now would we? That would be like.. just.. CRAZY! A well paying steady gig just ruins those neurons (see: Chenbot), and since there are so few actors and so many great jobs in Hollywood, who needs it?
At least with SmearyOBlabface out of the picture I can cancel my order for extra strength Xanax Paxil Heroin.

    http://www.realitytvworld.com/apwire/news/%60price-is-right-for-drew-carey-1.php?articleId=3086127&channelId=590

Carey, 49, spent a decade on his own ABC sitcom and also was host of the improvisational game show "Whose Line is It Anyway?"

He will also be host of a new CBS prime-time game show, "The Power of 10," that will air first next month. He told The Associated Press on Monday that CBS officials first contacted him about "The Price is Right" immediately after he completed a pilot of the other game show this spring.

Asked if he found the prospect of replacing such a TV legend daunting, Carey recalled talking to a friend who knows the game show business who told him, "as long as Bob Barker is cool with it, the fans will be cool with it." While he doesn't know Barker, Carey said he's comfortable that his predecessor will be accepting.

    Drew: 35.

Carey will crack some jokes and make it fun. Good for him.

Maybe they could mix it up and instead of Manufacturer's Suggest Retail Price, go with variants like -- at Macy's this would be .... , and at Old Navy, this would be ....
