"Antiques Roadshow"

Call me a fuddy-duddy, but I like this show. The stories behind the stuff people bring in to have appraised are fascinating.

Only thing I have that I'd like checked out is a frosted glass fruit bowl and candle holder set that I got from an auction in Lancaster, PA. It was at the house of a schoolteacher who never married and died at the age of 95 in the only house she'd ever lived. I couldn't quite afford the grandfather clock!

I love the show as well, however, if something else is on, the Roadshow comes second.

I agree. Every now and then I see something on that show that reminds me of stuff my grandparents used to have. Where it is now? who knows but someone's got some good buys!

Hey Cyg, we were almost in Fredneck over the weekend but had a change of plans.

For awhile, I was a dedicated viewer. I watch it less often now, but still enjoy it. I like it that AR goes to different cities. It is good to have a change in geography, and a focus on regional works of art.

I saw on their site that they even went to Honolulu earlier this year. That'll be an interesting collection of schtuff!

I wonder how many actually sell their loot for anywhere near what it is appraised for.

I would think a lot of the loot *doesn't* get sold, even after finding out it's valuable, but I think that would be more from the owners wanting to hold onto it.

Also, which I think is more to your point, the owners would need to know how to sell it so it would fetch something close to the value the appraisers say.

I do like how they have the "fans" at the end, even those who learn their carp is worth . . . carp.

Yeah. I like the show, too. A woman on a recent show was told that the total value of two paintings she had is $40,000. The woman nearly fainted. She asked for a chair to sit on.

I love AR but I like the British version way better than the US version. The Brits just have neater stuff

edited to fix damn spelling

I've only seen a couple of the British ones. I can vouch that they have better stuff; my folks bought a lot of it when they were there 35 years ago! The prices were actually quite reasonable then.

Quick story: My mom saw in a British antiques shop a pot that she planned to use as a planter . . . and did. The lady who ran the shop was aghast. That pot was used previously for, shall we say, some other less than sanitary purpose.
