OK, I'm probably the only one watching this but it is getting good. Kind of a cross between Jaws and ET? OK, its a bit hokey at parts (like yeah, building your own submarine? Who knew That was an option?). It looks like they're upping the suspense factor. Next week the killings begin. Hmmmm, killings, That makes for a good show!

I'm watching. So there's at least two of us! I like this show better than either Invasion or Threshold. A bathysphere is pretty primitive; I bought building one of those--although taking it to the extreme depth they did seems a real stretch.

I’m watching but after last nights show I’m not sure how much longer I will be. I know they need to fill a season but the story is moving too slowly to keep me intrigued (unlike Lost which also moves slowly but I hang on every word and detail). And last night’s bathysphere ep. was so…ridiculous?...that I was actually laughing at the “drama” of the bathysphere being swished by the sea creature to the precise spot needed so it could make it through the hole in the cave/ravine and then rise over 1000 feet without decompressing.

Since there is nothing else on Monday night I guess this show is safe on my tv roster for a while.

I'm watching ( I think there is a thread somewhere on page 2 or 3)
I missed last night ( went to see Harry Potter), but hoe to catch it on re-run.

I still say the creatures are Dragons.

The creatures are pretty cool. I think it's about time the kid (don't remember his name) fesses up about Nim though. What's he gotta do, get eaten by a pack of them before he'll realize they are vicious animals? It looks like his dear old Nim has grown a bit and may have become a little more nasty.

"Random thoughts"
Posted by bystander on 11-29-05 at 08:58 AM
Poor Nim bites it. Sad, almost cried a tear. Of course, Miles is an idiot for not telling anyone about him/her/it after he was attacked by the others.

What a surprise that none of the three major characters bit the dust this week. Who would've thunk?

I was actually waiting for Richard to drop the video camera out of the helicopter at the end. It seemed like the predictable thing to happen.

Miles' sister seems to have matured since the start.

I've never seen parents who leave their kids alone so often. What's up with that?

The show is moving a bit slowly. I hope it picks up the pace.

I'm still watching. It was really sad that Nim had to die. It will be interesting to see what the creatures are all about.

Can you guys give me a quick update? I missed it because I had to go to the emergency room for a sprained ankle.

As soon as we were in the waiting room, I looked at the clock and whined "We're missing Surface!!"

ALL NEW!
Rich (Jay R. Ferguson) and Laura (Lake Bell) sneak out of the hospital with the creature footage before Lee (Ian Anthony Dale) and his men can get to them. Upon their successful escape Rich and Laura take the exclusive footage to tape to a copying service company in an effort to upload it onto the internet and convince a news station to run a piece about the footage. Meanwhile, Miles (Carter Jenkins) is sad and defeated while he watches doctors preparing to perform an autopsy on Nim but that all changes when Nim sneezes and they realize he is still alive. TV-PG

"1/2 New Episode"

What a pleasant surprise to see a new episode last night. Some things are getting annoying and some things are getting interesting.

Annoying:

Miles getting fired from the aquarium simply for swimming with the chief's daughter and Nim in the big tank. Geeze, loosen up dude!

The whole MSNBC debocle. Who didn't see that coming from a mile away? Oh yeah, I built a bathosphere and filmed sea creatures a mile under the water. It looked believable until the sharp stab in the back by the anchor with his flash-software remark.

Miles' Mother - Simply an unbelievable character. Could have cast that role better IMO.

Interesting:

Miles is turning into a sea creature? Or at least taking on their electromagnetic personality. Interesting to see how that story develops.

Missing boat washed up on shore. What happened to Jackson?

Only 4 more episodes until the season finale. Hopefully it picks up the pace a bit.

ETF stuff

I was also "surprised" to discover a new episode was on Monday night -- I think NBC was THE ONLY network airing any new shows during the Monday holiday evening -- but my surprise quikcly turned to disappointment when I realized that the fact that the show made such a non-promoted return couldn't be a great sign.

Sure enough, what the "only four new episodes left" promo ran at the end, my feelings were pretty much confirmed -- there's no way the show aired 17 original episodes between late September and early December, so I have to assume that despite NBC's previous announcement that it had given the show a full season pickup, the fact that NBC is only planning to air 4 more episodes this year (substantially fewer than a standard 22 episode full season run) can't be good.

Btw, Monday night's show reportedly delivered the show's loweded rated original episode of the season, so that also can't be a good sign for the show's return -- but I hope I'm wrong, its a cheesy show sometimes, but it's a guilty (if extremely slow developing) pleasure.

Yup, they could have promoted it a bit. I only happened to surf upon it while looking for reruns I hadn't seen before. It is entertaining cuz it is a bit different than all the other CARP out there.

They reran all the early episodes on the SciFi channel before showing new eps on NBC. (I don't remember them actually being promoted, just there in my on-screen listings.) I was hoping they might have picked up some fans with that sojourn on SciFi - but I guess not. Too bad. I think it is a pretty good show.

"Surface 1/9 Episode"
Posted by bystander on 01-10-06 at 03:36 PM
This was a fairly good episode.

The mysterious Mr. Big using satellite technology to spy on Rich and Laura through the skylight? That had an "Enemy of the State" kinda feel to it. I'm looking forward to finding more out about "Ms Big". Now that we know she helped to genetically engineer the creatures.

Is Miles transforming into one of the creatures? The slime factor was eerie. Also, the electricity he gives off is kinda freaky.

Two killings also. A bonus, what's a suspenseful creature show without killings!

Oh yeah, and what happened to Jackson???

Looks like the next new episode is January 23rd. The following preview is from the nbc website.

EXPERIMENT GONE AWRY -- After it’s revealed to Laura that a cadre of top scientists created this new species, she wakes up in a field after being drugged and Rich comes to her rescue. Fearing the end of the world, Laura and Rich are determined to find the mysterious corporation that funded this experiment gone awry, but nothing could prepare them for what they discover in an abandoned laboratory along the way. Meanwhile, Miles joins Blum and his crew of aquarium workers on a boat excursion to find the egg field containing millions of unhatched creatures. Surprisingly, Miles later agrees to help law enforcement find Nim.

I'm more excited about this show than Lost (Yikes, did I say that out loud?) Lost has been slow to go lately also.

1/23? They bought it back for two weeks just to skip another one again.. argh.

Btw, Wife Swap seemed to hurt Surface last night, with the ABC show delivering its best ratings of the season and sending Surface (for the second consecutive week) to its lowest rating of the season.

Even still, the prelim fast national numbers weren't too bad -- NBC was third behind ABC and CBS, but Surface did beat Fox's House repeat and average 8.3 million viewers. But at this rate Fox's Skating with Celebrities first Monday episode on 1/23 might be the final nail in the coffin -- although once again, I really hope I'm wrong about that.

"1/23 Episode - WOW is all I can say."
Posted by bystander on 01-24-06 at 08:30 AM
Looks like the sea creatures are getting a bit bolder, coming on land, attacking. Of course they were attacked by the vigilante group first. Reminded me of the scene in Jaws where everyone and their brother are going out after the shark to collect the bounty after it killed the little boy on the beach. And now Miles is heading out to sea (on foot) with his new family??

So what kind of genetic engineering is the pharmaceutical company doing? That monkey thing, talking like a child and then turning vicious on Rich was a surprise. It looks like the company is working on some kind of anti-aging, fountain of youth type project.

Sorry to see Ms. Berkeley get killed off. I guess her internet usage was being monitored.

The previews show the big creatures coming to land next week. This is really getting good.

2 more episodes and they promise all questions will be answered. Hmmm, I guess that means the show will be over for good then? That's a shame because I really am liking this.

Me too, Bystander. I'll be sorry to see it go. I wish Sci-Fi would pick it up. At least they are giving us an ending, which is a nice surprise. The networks don't usually give a shite.

Anything with biting lizards and I'm in . I've really enjoyed this show.

Tahj is right, at least there is an ending, and that's a surprise (as long as they don't do a vaporization finish like they tried with Farscape).
I hope if Sci-Fi picks it up, they use the same writers.

"Season Finale tonight folks - 2/6"

Yup, that's SEASON, not SERIES so hopefully it will be back again. It looks like it's going to be jam-packed with lots of good stuff! Sea creatures coming on land? Huge Tidal Wave hits the US. Miles finally meets Rich and Laura. Throw in some more killings and we're all set guys. Grab the popcorn!

I can't believe this show isn't doing better in the ratings -- if it was on ABC, it'd probably be doing another 3-4 million viewers a week, NBC's lineup just sucks so bad right now. Below's the season-to-date viewership/rating rankings for NBC's shows -- they don't even have a single Top 20 show right now, and as little promotion as Surface is getting, its still one of their more highly rated shows

51?!? That's not good. It's still in the top 50% of NBC shows though so maybe there's hope.

The Season Finale was great IMO. Lots of suspense. Reporter gets eaten on live TV. Nim, Caitlin and Miles meet up with Laura & Rich. A Tidal Wave washes over Wilmington. Jackson is still around somewhere, I didn't quite follow his picture on the Monitor. What was that? Where does the tunnel and tram system lead?

Perhaps it is ending so soon so they can bring it back with new episodes this Summer when everyone else has reruns??? Yeah right. In any case, if it comes back or not I liked it alot.

THIS is my favorite tv show on right now! I LOVED the last episode and was so thankful to hear it was only the season finale not SERIES!!

about every 10 minutes i would have to gasp and say...OH MY! reporter being eaten, girlfriend head injury, tidal wave with nim running down the street> it can't get better?

but oh how i laughed when they pick a CHURCH to run into....oh well i am just so into this. and i wish they wouldn't have killed off the mad scientist...she was great!

there has to be more of us watching.

I hope this show is coming back! I am glad they gave us an ending but it seems like they dropped so many story lines to get to the end. I wonder if maybe SciFi will pick the series up since they had encore showings over there.
