...so I figured I'd spend the first half-hour watching a slightly less rigged competition.

Coming up in the second half-hour: John Wall retires.

I can't believe the drums started before he got his guitar pick out of his pocket.

Or it could be he forgot to fumble out his pick out before he was supposed to start.

Playing acoustic guitar.

Nice and bluesy.

Randy. Funny thing that was just alrit by me. This is down to the wire and can't do a safe easy song like that.

Ellen. This is the moment, live or die. Lefty Tighty Righty Loosey no Righty Tighty, you needed to blow us away.

Kara. Hard to pick something not everyone knows. First listen for people, just establishing it. didn't work in your favor.

Simon. It is the most important night, lucky have two song choices. That song was the salad. Hopefully something more to come. Kinda sounded like you were busking rather than competing. A dud song choice but you sounded good.

"RE: Casey James"
Posted by cahaya on 05-18-10 at 08:09 PM
Whoops, miscued right from the beginning, as if what? I'm supposed to sing now? And it stayed that way, kind of forced along without any real zing to it, with nothing on the guitar or vocals to blow us away. I already forgot what it sounded like.

"RE: Casey James"
Posted by zazzy on 05-18-10 at 08:42 PM
I think the song choice was one that summed up how he felt about AI and his experience. He knows the fix is in, Ellen's on her talk show saying Lee and Crystal. So he just plays something he likes and waits for the season to end.

What he played in Texas, now THAT was awesome. I was hoping he might pull out a little blues guitar but AI may have blocked that, so Casey just says, ok, what the heck, I'll just sing this song.

"RE: Crystal Bowersox"

Starts on the harmonica. Playing acoustic guitar, bong mic stand.

Ends on the harmonica.

Nice to hear her do something up tempo.

Randy. It is that time looking for a winner. Didn't love the arrangement. What I did like is your vocal on that. You rose above it, it worked in the end. Amazing song, good choice.

Ellen. The kind of song you want to sing, Melissa would be proud.

Kara. Agree with the GUYS. Your tone doesn't have the rasp, but it was still a good vocal. Hope you have a moment tonight.

Simon. Agree with what they said. Not a stunning version. What I like is up until now you haven't compromised yourself as an artist. Did what is you, an honest performance, made the right choice.

"RE: Crystal Bowersox"
Posted by cahaya on 05-18-10 at 08:20 PM
Crystal comes out with a harmonica on along with her acoustic, breathes out a few bluesy bars, then goes into her usual acoustic rhythm and song and finishes off with a blues turnaround on the harmonica as from the start. Pretty good performance, easy to listen to, ok for a concert song in between some big hits, but not a big hit itself.

"RE: Crystal Bowersox"
Posted by zazzy on 05-18-10 at 08:44 PM
She could have chosen a "moment" song; instead she chooses a song from one of her idols...

Again with the acoustic guitar. It's Guitar Idol.

He does seem more comfortable than usual.

Randy. I could see you doing this. Sounded amazing, someone is feeling like they can win this.

Ellen. That is what we are talking about. Taking this seriously. you were like a baby lamb and now you are like an impala, god that was yea yem.

Kara. you should us everything you got, dynamics, meaning, round one goes to Lee.

Simon. Why did you chose that. He says he is happy when playing it.

Honest with you, the contestant choices are OK, but that was on the money. I think you crushed the other two.

"RE: Lee DeWyze"
Posted by cahaya on 05-18-10 at 08:30 PM
I've never been a Lee fan, but I think he really put it together tonight. Superb song choice and arrangement to back up very solid rhythm guitar and an energetic, confident voice we haven't really heard so far this season. This was such a (mildly surprising) good performance that I forgot to check out which key and riffs he was playing on the guitar.

"RE: Lee DeWyze"
Posted by zazzy on 05-18-10 at 08:47 PM
Lee gets to talk about his home visit and we hear from Ryan how Lee is a changed man.

All these song choices are curious to me...I think they need to give better coaching to the contestants about song choices at the beginning of the season.

Look how much more relaxed and at home Lee is performing, What a surprise! (not)

It was so he would peak tonight, with the pimp spot.

Heh.

Daughters by John Meyers.

Think this is a great direction, commercial singer song writer. Kara needs to know your audience and they are women and girls (what about worsters?)

Her eyeballs turned into big "Pink Floyd" teeth and ate Casey up. Just sayin'.

Here's my problem with that blond god - when I watched the youtube videos of him in his element, on his home visit, he was loose, he was comfortable, but on stage he becomes somewhat wooden (*snort* I said wooden) but really, he is not comfortable on stage.

Oh ya, Kara, vulnerable - ready to strike, #####? 'cause I'll beat ya to the punch anyday.

Yeah, it could have been worse. Not all bad, actually.

But nowhere near like the way John Mayer both sings and plays it. The guitar in this was totally superfluous and the voice not as nearly as intense.

Playing guitar, another guitar player on the edge of the stage and piano on stage.

Does a guitar solo.

Randy. The one you chose but this fit you like a glove, keep going this direction.

Ellen. Beautiful for you. Lot of daughters voting for you.

Kara. This showed the more artistic side of you, where you are sensitive and that is where you shine. good job, changed but didn't stray too far.

Simon. I think it was a better song choice. Randy bleating on about arrangements. The climax is a limp guitar solo. They needed to give you a vocal.

Kara bleats on
Simon, you sounded good, didn't have that wow factor.

Kara and Randy bleat on.

So far the only half way decent performance was Lee's.

I am having a problem with the mix, and it only seemed OK with Lee.

I suspect Simon isn't a Leonard Skinnard fan.

Hope Crystal can come back. Without the Harp.

And please, give me a mute button for Kara. She still hasn't achieved Paula idiocy, but she seems to be trying.

"RE: Casey James Judges Pick"

Wow, hey, great play by the dude -- on the piano. Oh yeah, there was another guy on stage who let out a riff mid song. Oh, and sang it too. This performance started out slow and sleepy, swaybots in the wind and picked up a little but not much up to the closing riff. It already looks like Casey has resigned himself to finishing 3rd.

Oh come on, the judges tongue bathed Lee over a mediocre song and Lee managed to stay mostly in tune.

Simon and Kara and Randy cross talk helps take away from Casey's performance.

Lee in the pimp spot for the what? 4th time this season?

And a song that will get a big reaction from Simon....he'll wax on about Jeff Buckley...I can hear him already.

(the pimpage is really bugging me tonight)

Sitting on the side stairs.
Walks down to stage.

Left the man in and didn't change up the gender.

Walks behind the judges.

Seemed a little rough in spots.

Randy, great song, great vocals in it to win it.

Ellen. Couldn't have asked for more.

Kara. You didn't change it up that much, but you showed us parts of your voice and you pushed and no instrument, lots of risk.

Simon. I must admit I was kind of surprised, but now I get it. What you proved is you've got soul. Worked outside of your comfort zone, you may be thanking Ellen for putting you in the final.

"RE: Crystal Bowersox"

It would probably be a step in the right direction. Being stoned would make me over look the blatant pimping and make the lighting look cool. I don't think it would help the vocal. Kurt Nilson sings the ultimate version of this for me.

Playing acoustic guitar.

Audience won't stop clapping.

Randy. I've been waiting all season to see who will throw down the gauntlet. Simon set you up, biggest moment. Unbelievable dude.

Lee--says thank you to Simon

Ellen. I'm sure you listened to him, and trusted he chose the right song for you. Stunning.

Kara. You are what this show is all about. Someone with growth. Heart of the show this season, you owned the night.

Simon. I'm very proud of you. When I put myself where you were, looking for a break, tonight you proved you are a fantastic singer, and a great person. I hope you make it next week.

Simon: "you were looking for a break" (no mention of Lee's two previous albums plus videos that were made prior to AI, I guess that wasn't a break...).

I don't know if I can stand to watch X Factor because I understand that the BS factor is racheted up even higher on that program.

Well, here's a make it or break it song - and he made it. He could have easily crumbled with the song and arrangement, but I was pleasantly surprised to see him make good of it. Was I as bowled over like the judges were? Hardly, not even close, but I'll give Lee a thumbs up here.

ROFL!

What pimpage!

Simon pimps how Lee sings the song before he sings it.

Lee's lighting includes the lights forming a crown over Lee's head.

A choir of back up singers appear from behind and encircle him as he sings with more confidence than we have seen all season.

(again, not surprised...it's right on time)

And he manages to stay fairly well in tune.

Now for the tongue baths. The night is complete.

"RE: Lee Dewyze Judges Pick"

I felt Lee's rendition was amazing, the background singers did NOT overpower him, IMHO, a bit. His stunning voice, and amazing tonal qualities will hopefully lead him into the finale, where he definitely deserves to be.

Crystal did a very good job with both her songs, but just wasn't at her usual 110% tonight, for whatever reason. Ellen's pick for her was a good choice, but we've seen better, and I think she'll end up a strong second because of that.

"RE: Lee Dewyze Judges Pick"
Posted by byoffer on 05-18-10 at 09:31 PM
Ah, no.

Lee got the best song from the judges (Casey deserves a refund for the awful choice they gave him). This was an okay version of a great song, and thus Lee wins the night. But IMO his performance of the song was so-so. He was drowned out by the background singers.

Bad night on the show overall, IMO.

I want Crystal to win the whole thing.

Will the judges switch horses next week and back Crystal over Lee?

Is tonight just about ensuring Lee over Casey?

Or has the show switched to Lee?

Next week may be painful. They usually reprise something from earlier in the season and then sing the coronation song.

Will they recycle an old coronation song or has one been written?

What song do you want to hear Lee recycle?

And which one for Crystal?
