B.B. Andersen, one of the first contestants to compete on Survivor, has died after a battle with brain cancer. He was 77. Andersen passed away on Tuesday in Kansas City, Mo.

In a statement to PEOPLE, Survivor host Jeff Probst said: "B.B. was one of the original cast members who launched Survivor back in 2000. He was a powerful presence on the show and that zest for epic adventure was at the heart of everything he did. I was very saddened to hear of his passing."

Adds Richard Hatch, who won the season: "B.B. was a good man with whom I shared a memorable experience. My thoughts and condolences go out to his family."

BB was the first Survivor I ever saw voted out (I started watching Survivor after Ep 1). I've never missed a torch-snuffing since BB.

Thanks for getting it started for me, BB.

RIP

And in the spirit of the game, several former contestants attended the funeral just so they could try to steal his glasses.

I wonder if we're going to get a title card on Wednesday.

I'll bet we do. B.B. was a very memorable character, who even starred in a very topical Home Depot series of ads after Survivor (as well as a not-as-memorable Reebok series). I'm sure Mark Burnett looks at B.B. as one of his better casting decisions, back when the show's success was unlikely.
