"How does Mark All feature work?"

Posted by Efjendar on 07-18-02 at 11:26 PM
I click Mark All at home, but when I get to the office it seems the same threads are coming up again. I thought this feature was tied into my logon and not browser. Am I correct?

This feature (I tried it) seems to be user(cookie) specific. Okay, I tried it, don't like it, how do I turn it off and get back to the way things used to be?

I'll answer both questions...

The "Mark" and "Mark All" are user-specific... that is... when you mark messages using them, you must be logged in, and it will remember that you marked the messages, regardless of what computer you access the forums from at a later date.

Remember... if someone posts a new message to a thread that you have marked, it will become "unmarked" to indicate that a new message is available in that forum.

If you do not use the mark and mark all features of this site, then the forum software will make an attempt to "guess" what you've read... this IS computer-specific... in other words... if you use another computer, the software will think that you've read nothing since the last time you used that specfic computer.

To answer dabo's question... once you start to use the mark feature, I don't think that there is any way to turn it off in the version of the software that we use... but the best way that I've found to use it is to "mark" individual forums as you're done reading them... when you mark an individual forum, you will be transported back to the list of all of the forums, and you can choose the next forum that you wish to read.

If a new message is added to a forum while you're reading a different one, its easy to tell, because the forum will once again appear yellow on the forum-list page.

This is the part that's giving me the problem. Some of the same threads come up again (on a different computer) but there are no new messages. I'm logged in and everything. Its just odd is all. I guess I'll have to chalk it up to user error

When a message is deleted from the forums, the thread and forum will indicate that there is a new message, but the new message will not be there when you look (since it was deleted).

However, we rarely delete threads, so if this is something that happens to you frequently, I can't explain it.

What I'm confused about is how to even "mark" a thread. Once I select a thread, the "mark" icon no longer appears at the top of the screen. I've clicked on mark both before and after entering a thread, but nothing seems to happen! I am lost and feel so dumb about all this techie stuff, please bear with me--I'm over 40 (our idea of a computer was a Texas Instruments hand-held calculator for around $200!), I know I shouldn't be too hard on myself...but you young wippersnappers are truly amazing!

Salute!

It Marks one forum at a time, not one thread. I guess we have to read fast then click ;)

"Thx!"
