"a technical question followed by one about maybe etiquette"

First, the technical question: I see on the Help FAQ that you can mark posts as having been read, but I don't see how to do it on the actual posts. I find myself re-reading messages (not to mention spending altogether too much time on this board, but that's another help topic) and am looking for ways to cut down on the time I shouldn't be spending here.

Second, on etiquette. I've gotten quite a schooling on tone, posture, etc., as someone new to the boards and it *might* have been useful to have something along the lines of one of the lord of the flies episodes--or at least the ensuing advice--made available. The guidelines are good but they don't really address the insider quality of this board.

I should add that I actually *like* the insider quality of the board, since it seems to me to be a product of many engaged and generally witty people. The sparks and jabs make it interesting, even and sometimes especially when they're directed at oneself (then again I'm no poster girl for normality) as long as it doesn't get out of hand, and also as long as there are also the kind souls, such as Wheezy and Team Joisey, who step in despite that they surely have the intellectual wherewithall to join in the feeding frenzy. And it seems that the people running or moderating this board have an almost mystical ability to intervene just as things are taking an ugly turn--this latter, the emotional/intellectual gang violence, is from my Hobbesian point of view inevitable (that it's manageable you have done much to prove).

Anyway, it would have been nice (perhaps) to have some of these more expanded caveats or advice--such things as, when you take a strong stand or use a certain writing style we presume you are either stupid or a teenager, an odd one and apparently the result of the AI boards. Or "until we get to know you, please indicate when you are joking for otherwise we're going to assume you are stupid or a teen-ager." Etc.

anyway, thanks to you all for your great work and board. I really have to figure out a way to stop participating in it.

Sorry, there is no way I have found to mark a post as having been read, the closest you can get to that here is to mark a forum as having been read.

As for the rest of your query, ya lost me somewhere in all that. Participation is da Bomb! dramamama! That's what it's all about. Antagonism is an art, though, and not requisite for either participation or difference of opinion.

Thanks, dabo: and sorry for the delayed gratitude. As for getting lost in the rest of my ramblings, I can see what you mean. But my intentions were good, and that must be worth a DAW point or two :0
