"chat issues"

problems getting in to chat-try to log in, get "wait" and it hangs. There's probably not much you can do about this but since it's being bandied about in OT I thought I'd mention it here.

Thank you!

If anyone has any additional symptoms to report, please post them on this thread.

Thank you.

The symptoms I'm aware of are:

The problem starting either Friday overnight or Saturday, the 21st during the day. Woe and I had a small chat on Friday night and I'm pretty sure she chatted with Wanda thereafter. So, it clearly was working at that time.

On Saturday night, when many were eager for a chat, it was determined through trial and error and the chat room would allow one user in and any other user who tried to log in go the 'Wait' message. As far as I can tell, it hung at that point. That is, it wasn't waiting for the current user logged in to log off in order to let the person waiting in.

Hope this helps

ETA: How come I'm post #3 if there's no #2? Is this the way it works when a single post is deleted (that is, it keeps it's post id #)?

After I read about the problem on OT, IceCat pointed me to this thread. I wrote a reply for the OT thread but inadvertently posted it here, because I hadn't switched back after following Icey's link. So ... I deleted my reply, which was post #2.

Simple explanation, but I thought nobody would notice if I just deleted it. Guess not!

"Any news?"

I hate to be a bother, but can we get a quick update on the status of chat?

I'm totally jonesin' for a trip to the bar!

If it's a money issue, I swear I'll tip better I promise!

"Current status"
Posted by AyaK on 04-09-04 at 11:04 AM
OK, full story:

The company that hosted the free chat service that we have used since 2000 was acquired by another company a long time ago. They dropped support for the chat service right away, but they continued to let the service run ... although we're not entirely sure that they knew it was still running.

Anyway, there's no one there to fix it ... so our assumption is that the current chat is gone for good.

We've been looking at chat services but have yet to find anything that is comparable to what we had -- in fact, most of what Webby's seen so far has been fairly dismal. He's still searching.

Unfortunately, that's the current status of chat in a nutshell. Webby will post a fuller update when he has a chance.

Looks like the existing chat got fixed, although we do not know how. But we'll take a miracle however it happens.

When I try to get into chat, I get a blank blue page with the options in small letters at the top. When I click on Live Chat, nothing happens. When I click on Log In, I end up in Press Releases for Amazing Race 4. I've never been able to get into chat. Different things have happened, but the above is the most common. I'm on Dial Up. Does that make a difference?

I tried the link that I Got Nutn suggested, but just got a blank page. The Mac I have is a Power Macintosh 4400/200. It's around 10 years old, I'd say (it was a gift from someone replacing theirs--we got their old one).

If there are things I need to disable, or whatever, I'm totally computer illiterate, so please be patient.

Oops, I assumed you were on a windows platform.
For a Mac go to http://developer.apple.com/java/download.html
The 4400 supports OS version 7.5.3 - 9 and I am not sure how to tell which you have. It would have come with 7.5.3 originally.
At the bottom of the page is DOWNLOAD PREVIOUS MRJ RELEASES. Figure out which is right for you, probably MRJ 1.5.1
Hope this is helps.
