Ahh, the perfect site for the Wahhabi Muslem men like Osama. Of course, let's not forget that most of the Saudi males have the view that females only exist to wait on them and bear the children ... I think, in the West, we used to refer to that view as "keep 'em barefoot and pregnant." In the East, it's probably "keep 'em barefoot, pregnant, and hidden."

One thing I learned just recently, in all the new emphasis on the Saudis, is that the Saudi ambassador to the U.S., Prince Bandar bin Sultan, is the illegitimate son of Prince Sultan and a Sudanese slave girl that he owned. Hey, doesn't that remind you of the antediluvian American South?

Actually, the first thing that crossed my mind was Thomas Jefferson--that Saudi ambassador is a prince, and Sally Hemmings' descendents are STILL fighting for whatever they think their piece of the pie is. . . I guess the difference is that the Saudis accept the fact that they're owning people, but those danged Americans didn't want to admit to that fact for a few centuries. . .

And unfortunately, I don't think the "barefoot and pregnant" crowd is entirely in the past here, either. . .

Think it's time to send Yoko in undercover? LOL--kill two birds with one stone, so to speak?

Interesting comparison --- because I originally appended such a comparison to my post, then removed it since it seemed like overkill. But, since you and I continue to think alike...

Apparently Prince Sultan couldn't have cared less about Bandar and refused to send him to school. But one of Sultan's wives ended up letting Bandar play with her children and setting up lessons for him ... and then Bandar did the rest. The wife pushed for Sultan to meet with his son, and Bandar so impressed Sultan that Sultan decided to treat him equally with his legitimate children.

TJ was a widower, and Sally (his wife's much younger half-sister, whom he "inherited" when Sally's father, TJ's father-in-law, died) was described by contemporaries as very nearly white. In fact, three of her four children lived out their lives as white (the fourth "reclaimed" his slave heritage after the Civil War). But, as you point out, the only allowance that TJ made for them was that he gave them their freedom -- which was more than most U.S. slaveowners did for their slave children.

Thinking of this makes me think of Puddin'head Wilson, one of Mark Twain's bitterly ironic stories, in which the two male children of the slaveowner (one by his wife, one by his maid) look so much alike as babies that the slave mother decides to switch them ... with long-term catastrophic results.

That's patriarchy for you. But it's better than matriarchy, if one of the consequences of matriarchy would be a rise in Yoko's popularity!
