"Defense for Dan"
Posted by rasslinmomma on 11-09-09 at 12:24 PM
Apparently, I've got a different interpretation of last night's episode than most of the folks posting thus far. When Dan mentioned how long it had taken Season 6's racers to complete the detour, I immediately thought "oh wow, we actually have a racer who has watched this before."
When Dan repeatedly told Sam to stop picking through the rolled-out bales and simply look along the roll, I thought "oh wow, he actually remembers alot about the task from Season 6. Dan should really listen to him."
Tempers continued to flare as Sam refused to take good advice, and Dan became increasingly frustrated at the "I can do it all by my self" attitude of brother Sam.
A little listening can go a long way. I still think Sam was in the wrong.

I don't recall Dan saying the 8 hours thing. I do recall Matt saying that to Ericka. Of course, there were a few times when Mr. Nutz was talking during the show, so I may have missed it.I still think Dan was incredibly wrong with his insane tirade. He also felt that way as he finally shut up and when they got to the pit stop, he apologized. There is helping and there is hindering. If he supposedly knew so much, why didn't he just do the blipping roadblock?

Yeah Dan did mention the 8-hour thing - Sam looked up and said, "You had to tell me that NOW? Don't tell me that!"Dan should have called Sam over at the beginning and said, "this is how I recalled it was done during the show in Episode 6 -- try sticking your paw into the middle of the bale and see if you can feel a flag" -- instead, he just let Sam go and then howled at him from a distance. When you're focused on a challenge that you've already started, the last thing you want is to be distracted by screeching from your partner saying "stop kicking at the hay! go faster!"

I also am not sure if it was in the center last time would mean it had to be in the center this time. However I think it is probably easiest when making those hay roll things to do it near the start then try to put in half way through.I do think the "everything you are doing is wrong" type of yelling never does much other than to cause the person doing the task to shut you out and not hear when you do have a point.

I'm not sure how easy it is to stick your hand in the middle of a tight roll of hay. Individual strands may be fragile, but a compact mass can be a wall -- and from what I remember, Lena cut up her hands pretty badly while doing the task normally. If he tried to repeatedly pull that stunt without gloves, Sam might have lost a layer of skin.

The producers made a point of showing Cheyne tossing a set of gloves to Meghan at the start of the task. (That was a smart racing move and showed good preparation on their part.) While we didn't see much of the methods used to find the flag inside the hay bales, I bet Meghan's hands were in good shape after finishing the task.

Estee is right just how do you know that about hay bales? Those hay bales are packed very tight. The only way to see if something in near the middle is to unroll it.

I'm not sure that either one of them were really in the right. One started yelling, the other immediately yelled back, and things went from there. But I wonder how long the fight actually lasted? It seemed like a lot of the "continuation" was just a repeat of what had been said before, but from a different camera angle. Not to blame the editing entirely, because obviously they were yelling at each other. Just an observation.

LAST EDITED ON 11-23-09 AT 01:41 PM (EST)Apparently I wasn't the only one hoping Big Easy's oversized, low-hanging butt would bump Sam and/or Dan and capsize their kayak. Repeatedly.
