Why not do it differently? The best item comes with a loss of vote. That was probably the burger or the breakfast but if you want it you have to give up your vote instead of money. If more than one person gives up their vote then what? I'd say either they share the food but they all lose their vote or they have to outbid the other(s).

Isn't it strange that the minute a target is put on Rachel, she finds an idol?Let's look at it this way: The scene with Genevieve, Sue & Caroline happened BEFORE the auction so when Rachel was left with the biggest loot, production put the clue in her fry bowl.
It wouldn't be the first time a scene is presented put of sequence and it would explain why they do the auction this way: It gives them control on who wins what.
