EW Deleted Scene: J Maya's Hindu faith,Sheldor, 04:49 AM, 10-14-23
We haven't seen a lot of J Maya on Survivor 45. You would think we would get tons of footage of the international pun champion tossing out pun facts right and left, but that's not what happens when your tribe keeps winning and you're not the one off finding idols or forming dominant alliances.
But fear not! We've got some exclusive J Maya footage to tide you over until the singer/songwriter is able to start making moves and voting people out (or get voted out) of the game. In the deleted scene from episode 3 of Survivor 45 seen above, we hit the Reba tribe beach on day six of the game, and J Maya is leading the tribe! At least, she is leading them in a Hinduism chant.

"Every chant in Hinduism has a very specific meaning, and my favorite chant is a chant basically that asks for peace to all beings on Earth," she explains before instructing her tribemates how to follow her.
It seems going to the beach to chant and meditate has been a regular event for J Maya in the game. "My faith is something that really tethers me out here," she says. "I go to the beach sometimes when I'm feeling overwhelmed and I meditate and I chant and I just try to remind myself of all the good in the world that exists even with all the stress and the chaos."
But the connection from her faith to the game is even stronger than that. "There are so many values ingrained in Hinduism — like steadiness, perseverance, endurance, and just giving up control," J Maya says. "And in the game of Survivor, it's kind of true. It's important to take a step back and say 'Look, I'm going to give this my all. And at the end of the day, I can't control the outcome.' And it's helpful to have that reminder."
It's a scene that offers a powerful window into the mind of a contestant we haven't yet had a chance to see a lot of, and hopefully acts as a preview of what we will experience from the player moving forward.
Check out the scene of "mini-Hinduism 101" for yourself at the top of the article, and for much more on the show, also make sure to read our full Survivor 45 episode recap.
Survivor airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on CBS.
