Premieres tonight (1/11) at 10 p.m. on SyFy -- for ninety minutes, which means we're facing some kind of mega-challenge for the first round and may even get contestant introductions for a stunning second year in a row! Say, MB, are you taking notes?SyFy has been giving this one some industry promotion: they bought the back cover of The Hollywood Reporter, which tells you a little about the intended audience and at least shows they're making some attempt to get the contestants some work. I'll tune in because I want to see the creativity, hear more panic about appliances that don't set properly, and learn still more uses for eyeliner that never actually reaches the eyes.
Oh, and most of last year's worst DAWs probably won't be given a second chance. That's good too.

Why is it that every time someone decides to reimagine a classic, the result always has to be darker and edgier? Oz always had its share of nightmares lurking in the corners, but the main characters don't have to be the central scream point.

The women had the stronger overall quartet once you take out the literal hatchet job on the Tin Woodsman, but I felt the best makeup of the night was on the Cowardly Lion's face for the men's side. The distended rib cage, not so much -- but that face was incredibly expressive.

One of the joys of this series is that it's one of the last judging panels on reality television which can tell the contestants when they svck. And did they ever have a lot to talk about last night...
Some of the brilliance is there, but we've got a long way to go.
Watched both episodes tonight. The sea creatures were amazing.Huge line between really good and horribly bad. I would have had a hard time deciding who to send home as I would have wanted all four gone. I actually thought the shark was worse than the turtle.
I think I would have given the win to the girl that chose to put the irridescent cloth on the edges as that is what brought that costume to life.
LAST EDITED ON 01-23-12 AT 10:29 AM (EST)With the shark, what struck me beyond the bad clothing (which was really your basic brain hiccup) was the relatively tiny size of the mouth and lack of teeth on display. If you want to sell shark, you might think 'bite' before anything else and all this one could do was clobber you with the briefcase he didn't have.
ETA: I actually thought the lionfish was destined for Bottom Two until the model got onto the water. Dry and walking, the assembly looked like a travesty. But get it wet...
I would have given thought to sending Jerry home: the prosthetics were his, so the back appliance flying off in the water could be fairly blamed on him. But that cloud of paint... no water testing, no dipping anything in their mini-tank as a just-in-case, just full submerge and insta-pollution. Maybe if they'd tried to sell it as a self-disintegrating alien from Signs II?
I'd never seen a leafy sea dragon before last night. The world is wonderfully weird.
I don't care what the judges say: that buttsketball haunted what very little sleep I got last night.So we're at the point of repeating challenges and it's only Season #2. Body painting this week, horror movie villain next week... the contestants may not be out of creativity, but the producers seem to be.
And Jerry? Is poison.
Phobia challenge - Jerry really is arrogant. He may have 20 years experience, but that didn't help him tonight (errr, last night). I really did like the fear of frost and was glad they didn't slight the artist for his appliance problems. It was a good look. Beki may be snotty, but she has vision and is focused on getting the job done. Her parasitic mouth was amazing. I acutally thought she might win. Can't remember the name of the man who did the teeth phobia, but I am glad he got the win.
