"The Voice S1: Live Semis Performance ECST"

Posted by vince3 on 06-21-11 at 06:25 PM
Tonight we will find out who'll move on from Adam's and Cee Lo's teams... and it probably will be early, since the then Top 8 will perform to see who'll advance forward for to represent their coach/mentor in next week's Finals...

Of note, the voting period will only be one day because the Results for this round is tomorrow night...

So, it's 9-11 EST on Tuesday with results 8-9 on Wednesday - this week. This show is moving along at a pretty quick clip. I wonder how they're going to fill that hour tomorrow night.

Apparently Xtina's acting like a Diva when the camera's off, and won't shut up when it's on... even if it's not on her... and the boys might not like it...

Classic response of women among men trying to compete. Speaking loudly and more often does not equal power or strength. That being said, Xtina is a great part of the show and her voice deserves to be heard without being ragged on (bad pun).

Yeah, I think this is a lot of hot air for the lack of anything else for the media to play off.

Maroon 5 and Blake will perform tonight as well as the Top 8...

Winning the Viewer's Save is: Vickie Martinez!

Cee Lo will use his Coach's Save on: Nakia!

Nakia deserved another round most -- but the coaches are starting to go off the bend with their No Hard Feelings policy. Can anyone say 'You were horrible last week: get out?' Because more than a few of the contestants were, and someone's got to bring it up. Someone other than us.

"Team Adam: Results"
Posted by vince3 on 06-21-11 at 09:14 PM
Winning the Viewer's Save is: Javier Colon!

Adam will use his Coach's Save on: Casey Weston! (almost chose Jeff...)

"RE: Team Adam: Results"
Posted by cahaya on 06-21-11 at 09:16 PM
Javier was the clear front-runner of these four. And I was like Adam, sort of a toss up between the other three. So Casey it is.

The result: 6 gals and 2 guys to go into the semi-finals.

"Mistake."
Posted by Estee on 06-21-11 at 09:17 PM
He may be trying to ride Javier to F4, but he'd have better long-term credibility as a coach if he'd taken Jeff.

"RE: Team Adam: Results"
Posted by whimsey on 06-21-11 at 09:17 PM
And the boards light up with conspiracy theories - why at the last minute pick Casey (I thought her performance was flawed)?

"RE: Team Adam: Results"
Posted by cahaya on 06-21-11 at 09:32 PM
Yeah, I thought he'd go with Jeff, but after tonight (and tomorrow night's results) I doubt his choice will make any difference with Javier almost sure to go into the top 4.

"RE: Team Adam: Results"
Posted by weltek on 06-22-11 at 11:38 AM
Adam hasn't kept it a secret that he thinks Casey has a really unique voice. Jeff has almost zero marketability, while Casey does. I think it was a no brainer.

Apparently for this round, the coaches will score the singers, and that will factor in with the viewer's voting...

Like A Prayer

She starts on on a mini Steps of Doom with backup dancers/choir members surrounding it... After the first batch of lyrics, she descends with guidance from a member of her choir.

We will get Coach's comments after the song, but the scores won't be revealed until the end of the show... same format for next week I believe, too...

It's purely by audience vote, but the coaches get to exert their influence through their own scoring to sway the votes one way or the other.

(eta) It turns out this isn't correct. Both the judges' scores and the votes are combined.

"RE: Team Christina: Frenchie Davis"

Straight up vocal performance, no frills in the arrangement apart from some white robed choreographed dancers. This lady has the pitch, range, power and incredibly steady long sustains to be able to sing anything. While I wouldn't buy a CD of this kind of song, I appreciate excellent song when I hear it. Glad she did make down the stairs ok! (She had a little help with one singer holding her hand on the way down.) Thumbs up.

"Team Cee Lo: Nakia"

What Do You Want From Me? (Adam Lambert)

White Tux with black shirt sitting at a piano to start out.

Once the song rocks out, he kicks the bench away and stands center stage.

Be careful looking at the video monitors onstage and in the background, they may induce seizures...

"RE: Team Cee Lo: Nakia"

Nakia opens a vein every time he performs. I'd buy a ticket!

"RE: Team Cee Lo: Nakia"
Posted by cahaya on 06-21-11 at 09:38 PM
Starts off on the piano, you wonder if he's going to do a slow number, but he kicks up the tempo (as well as the piano bench!) and then strolls all around the stage ending up in the audience. Fairly good vocal performance with solid sustains and uses the stage to good effect. The only thing really lacking here is his camera sense - it helps to connect to the people who count, the voters, and he hardly gave the TV audience an eye-to-eye look.

"RE: Team Cee Lo: Nakia"
Posted by whimsey on 06-21-11 at 09:42 PM
I debated the camera sense issue and hoped that he doesn't become a camera-whore. Gotta be a middle ground there.

"RE: Team Cee Lo: Nakia"

Yeah, there's a balance there, and good camera sense often only comes with practice and experience.

Losing My Religion

White Girl With Guitar time... She's even helping out with a little band arrangements this time...

Another guitarist on the Steps of Doom, and an image of a swinging light bulb (reference to the music video of the song, I believe) on the monitors... She leads the crowd to clap along at a couple of points in the song (with clapping sound effects to help out)

I can't decide it the "I'm an artist, not an EMO, dammit!" persona is real or forced. Excellent job either way.

"RE: Team Blake: Dia Frampton"
Posted by cahaya on 06-21-11 at 09:50 PM
Camera starts on a mandolin player, pans to a close up of Dia face, which we see a lot of in this song. She's playing an acoustic with the fret on G#, playing in a fairly unique key that suits her folksy voice perfectly. The song started off well, and it continued to grow on me as it went along. Thumbs up to my Shoppe gal.

She has a pretty voice (and a pretty face), but her song still came off as a bride-and-groom dance slow dance number I'd hear at a wedding reception, where no doubt she'd get a pretty good round of applause afterwards. Thus far, the weakest performance of the night, as plausible as it was.

"Maroon 5"

Move's Like Jagger

It's the most dressed up we've seen Adam in a while, I believe...

Christina is MIA from her seat... and that's because she's gonna make an appearance on stage, coming in from the walkway from the crowd's side of the studio. (she is in the same outfit from her judge's chair, though...)

Monitors again are boderline seizure inducing.

"RE: Maroon 5"
Posted by whimsey on 06-21-11 at 10:08 PM
I've not been a fan of Maroon 5 and specifically Adam Levine. The "winy little b!tch" vocals combined with the standard "pop/ear worm" rhythms always grated on my nerves. Seeing Adam Levine as coach garnered a level of respect for him as a person, but sorry, I'm not buying it.

One of my fav songs by BB King, and Beverly does it justice. It starts off with her at the piano going slow, then kicks in with her still on the bench. She gets up and jives along with the blues rhythm the whole way through. Vocally very strong and musically solid. I just wonder if she needs to be medically evaluated for a concussion the way she jerks her head around though! She has visage that either comes through as charisma or anti-charisma - C Lo hinted at it when he said she'd kick someone's A if they tried to keep her off the stage. Thumbs up.

"RE: Team Christina: Beverly McClellan"
Posted by whimsey on 06-21-11 at 10:26 PM
That's it! That's it!

I could see Beverly, Crystal Bowersocks, Buddy Guy, BB King-you name them in concert. (with Bruce Willis on harmonica to bring in the high ticket sales)

"RE: Team Christina: Beverly McClellan"

The only female vocal of this song I've heard before is BB King with Tracy Chapman. BB King has also done this song along with quite a few other of my fav guitarists, including Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy and Gary Moore.

Ok, I'll put you in the anti-charisma camp (see my post above). I went through most of the songs again while not viewing the video, just listening to the audio. I'm fairly indifferent to stage presence as I almost always listen to music audio only. She sounds great in audio, particularly for this type of song by BB King, but I wouldn't want to watch her perform it in concert.

Fix You (Coldplay)

Walking the tightrope of honoring the original version and making it your own... tricky proposition...

1-855-VOICE-06

Oh no, not again... *seizure monitors*...

"RE: Team Adam: Javier Colon"
Posted by cahaya on 06-21-11 at 10:27 PM
Comes out with a wide-body acoustic with capo on standard G rock key with a rock band back up. He hardly plays the acoustic, though, except for a bit of arpeggio work at the beginning and very end, slinging the guitar behind his back for most of the song. Solid vocal performance, but I didn't find it extraordinary. Still, expect him to make it to the top 4. The judges spent so much time talking about the missing hat that we know they weren't wow'ed by the performance itself.

"RE: Team Adam: Javier Colon"
Posted by whimsey on 06-21-11 at 10:30 PM
I can see why he has not been more successful. He has the vocal skills, artistic creds but he didn't grab me in a way I thought he should.

"RE: Team Adam: Javier Colon"
Posted by weltek on 06-22-11 at 11:43 AM
I somewhat agree. He needs to dial the stage presence up a notch and take some bigger risks.

I get the impression he's struggling with the balance between stage confidence and cockiness. He wants to exude more confidence, but he's afraid he'll come off as being too cocky.

Now we see some proof of the pro parts being pre-recorded: Xenia's up next and first they show a shot of her on the stage at the end of the song, then they go to live backstage in a much different look for her song...

She has a Duffy/Adele quality to her voice. But she is still a work in progress. That said, Xenia is great.

Blake may not have a team member in the final 4.

"RE: Team Blake: Xenia"

Blake may not have a team member in the final 4.

I'm not sure how the voting results work here, but I was under the (possibly false) impression that one from each team would make it through. Even if not, I would imagine that Dia would make the top 4.

Well, I'm still a little confused about the judge score / voting thing (and whether for sure it's one from each team), but I think we were told the formula is on the site where we vote.

Ok... the voting is select one from each team (4 total votes).

I picked Beverly (tough choice over Frenchie), Vikki (tough choice over Nakia), Javier (over Casey), and Dia (tough choice over the inexperienced Xenia).

So it appears, it will be one from each team going into the Final 4, which makes sense or else a judge would become redundant if both their singers were voted off.

"RE: Team Blake: Xenia"
Posted by cahaya on 06-21-11 at 10:47 PM
Wow, she has a beautifully unique voice, very pleasant to listen to. But stagewise, she has the deer-in-the-headlights look, glued to the mike stand until the very end and even then her steps were very tentative, with no swing into the rhythm. She is a vocalist par excellence, but she'll need more stage experience to really shine. I'll give her a thumbs up, but you can fairly safely bet that Dia will represent Blake in the Final 4.

A liitle bit of a Vanilla Ice fade going for her, and she's got a pair of big ol' drums at her mike stand... she uses her drumsticks to get the crowd clapping beats... She's also got drummers on the walkways.

Energetic performance.

"Coach's scores"
Posted by vince3 on 06-21-11 at 11:00 PM
America's votes carry equal weight with these:

100 points to divide between their two artists...

Scores are liked in and handed off to the voting accountants...

It took so long that Carson's pimping of next week's Finale got cut off...

"RE: Coach's scores"
Posted by cahaya on 06-21-11 at 11:10 PM
Hmmm... so if judges puts 100 on one and 0 on another, it's a done deal because the votes might be 20/80 and not make a difference.

I wonder if they'll reveal the judges 100 point allocation and the vote percentages.

"RE: Coach's scores"
Posted by emydi on 06-22-11 at 10:54 AM
From FAQ Voice page

How is my vote combined with coach scoring to determine which artists advance after the semifinals performances?

After the semifinals performances, both coach score and audience vote will determine which artists advance to the final performance round. Each coach will have 100 points to split between the two artists on his or her team. The number given to each artist is their "Coach Score." Each artist will also receive an "Audience Score" that reflects his or her share (or percentage) of total votes cast for the team. This number is calculated by dividing the votes the artist received by the total votes received by that artist's team. Each artist's "Coach Score" and "Audience Score" will be added, and the artist with the higher overall number on each team will advance to the final performance round.

For example: Artist A and Artist B from Sample Team receive 1,000,000 and 3,000,000 audience votes, respectively, for a total Sample Team vote of 4,000,000. This means Artist A's Audience Score is 75 (3,000,000 divided by 4,000,000), and Artist B's Audience Score is 25 (1,000,000 divided by 4,000,000). Assume Artist A receives a Coach Score of 55 and Artist B receives a Coach Score of 45 (for a total of 100 points). To determine who advances, combine the artists' respective Audience Scores and Coach Scores:

•Artist A: 75 + 55 = 130
•Artist B: 25 + 45 = 70

In this example, Artist A has the higher combined score and will advance to the finals.

"RE: Coach's scores"
Posted by cahaya on 06-22-11 at 02:44 PM
So, a coach theoretically could rig it by giving 100/0 in their scores, giving a contestant no chance to advance.

It'll be interesting to see if they actually reveal the final score, including the coachs' scores and the voting percentages. Revealing these would keep the coaches honest. Not revealing these would allow a coach to rig it regardless of votes.

I'm pretty sure that was a dig at either Adam Lambert or AI. I don't follow top 40 rock that much and even I know that song. Plus, Lambert was on every awards show, probably with Levine in attendance.
