Did any of you see the previews for a new show on NBC called Hit Me 1 More Time? It is a reality show which has a contest with a bunch of 80's bads competing for another shot at fame. Looks real interesting to me. I saw that The Knack and Loverboy were two of the bands that will be competing. Anyone catch the other bands?

(Censored). I was hoping I'd just hit my head on something.

(I thought I saw Wang Chung, but I also thought I was having a hallucination.)

It's a pity I have to wait.

I saw the previews and laughed. I am a true child of the 80's and love listening to 80's music, but I just don't see how any of these people will make it today. The reason several 80's artists are still around today is because they have evolved with culture. John Mellencamp still plays great music, but over the years it's tweaked and different, same thing for the newly reunited Duran Duran and Prince...

On a side note, it will be interesting to see if Mike Reno from Loverboy still dons the leather pants. About 8 years ago I was working for a radio station that sponsored a concert with them. I was actually the "official driver" for the band driving them to the airport. Anyway, Mike Reno was pretty over-weight and he looked pathetic in those skin tight pants! If I can find the pic with me and him I'll post it, otherwise you'll have to use your imagination!

Finally and We Gotta Love Thang are two of the songs I remember the most. She had many hits in the gay community that were big dance hits.

Edited because I thought it was Thing...not THANG!

She is actually a phenomenal singer...she was a gospel singer before she was 'made' into a pop/dance singer - she went to the high school I would have gone to had I not gone to a performing arts school. I once heard a recording of her singing at her school and man, she was great.

"bands backing out of the show"
Posted by daybreak on 05-30-05 at 10:11 PM
I just found out that my favorite band Air Supply won't be on the show June 8th. According to a fan board I belong to, Graham Russell (tall blond guy) decided to back out after hearing some of the publicity for the show. I didn't like the comercials much. I thought they were quite demeaning. While Air Supply has gotten older physically, they still perform over 150 shows each year and still sound really good. I wonder if any other acts will back out after this.

The show is probably going to bite, but also has the potential to be almost interesting. I remember most of the artists scheduled to appear and can recall most of their hits. Not too many for most of them, but that's kinda what this show is about.

ugghh.i'm watching this show and some of the performances are just horrid in my opinion. Can anyone say Tiffany??

forget that most of these people look like they should be singing at an old folks home or in an ad for hair club for men or weight watchers, some of these people simply just can't sing anymore. It's a shame to hear a person that originated the song make it sound like an aweful Karaoke rendition.

Where's Simon when you really need him? That would be some funny shite to see Simon and crew critiquing the stars on performances of their own songs.

"RE: Anyone else notice they weren't playing the music?"
Posted by DonnaLynn on 06-03-05 at 09:59 AM
My hubby (who only watches Survivor) actually wanted to watch this show so we Tivoed it and watched this morning. We were both too sick after watching to eat breakfast.

Mike Reno from Loverboy was just as grody as I remember him from about 10 yrs ago and his hair was hysterical.

Tiffany was falling out of her outfit, but, she is pregnant and from what I remember, she had a boob job years back so she really should have worn something a little less revealing. When she leaned over to sing to the audience it was way too much exposure!

Did anyone else notice that none of these bands were actually performing the music? The only thing that was live was the singing, the rest was all for show. When a Flock of Seagulls was singing we slow-moed through the drummers shot on the screen and he wasn't even hitting the drums! Not to mention that NONE of the instruments were even hooked up to anything including the keyboard. My husband who's a musician said that none of the guitarists were even trying to play what was being played through the speakers. He said they were doing a really bad job of pretending...

Pretty pathetic. We both agreed that all of these people must be pretty desperate to be on this show. Hopefully they will all stay where we want them, in our memories and on 80's radio stations across the land.

I can’t believe I watched it. How sad (both the show and me).
At first I thought the host was Scott Baio until he started talking. Now THAT would have been ultimate cheesefest and I certainly would have IMMEDIATELY changed the channel, just out of principle. But I was too lazy to pick up the remote so it was on in the background for an hour. Didn’t care much for it. I'll make sure to avoid it in the future.

"Excuse me..."

Hey now, calm down Scott fans, looks like I hit a nerve here. I’m sorry! I’m sorry! (one for each of you-geez I feel like Ruben Studdard).
Ok, I was sitting across the room (we have a very large living room – 45 feet long-seriously and a very small TV) and couldn’t really see anything but the hair and you have to admit Scott has distinctive hair. It hasn’t changed since Happy Days. And what exemplifies the 80’s better than Scott? I just assumed it was him at first.
Uh, actually what I was trying to say is that I didn’t want to see Scott degrade himself in this cheesefest and couldn’t stand to watch that. (is that better?

"a dissenting opinion"
Posted by toddE on 06-03-05 at 02:05 AM
My not into these kinds of shows friend thought Tiffany was the best. And I was 23 when Tiffany came out and I always used to hate her--so monotonal. I thought she sounded better than before and she was good on Breakaway as well. The crowd seemed to love her and I thought she had it in the bag.

But if it wasn't her, I thought Arrested Development was the other best one. Their second performance put their own twist on a modern song and I was impressed. Plus the group in general and Speech in particular seem to have learned from their mistakes (unlike, sadly, Vanilla Ice) and eliminated or toned down their annoying characteristics that made everyone get sick of hearing them back in the day.

Cece was solid, but not unique.

Loverboy and A Flock of Seagulls were both disappointing.

This episode was my cup of tea as I liked all of them except Tiffany the first time, and I was impressed with Tiffany tonight.

Is there going to be a "grand champion?"

"RE: Hit Me 1 More Time"

Train wreck. But with a few redeeming moments. I toggled
between this and the "Beauty and the Geek" show I missed last
night. BatG was a better use of my time.

I thought the first performances of Loverboy, A Flock of
Seagulls, and Tiffany stank. I had scads of appreciation for
the AI finalists after hearing these artists butcher their
own songs!

CeCe and Arrested Development outclassed the rest, and I did
enjoy the part of "Heaven" AD sang before I switched back to
the Geek Squad.

I believe Tiffany is my age, give or take a year or two. And
boy, I have much better self-esteem now.

Thank goodness for a quick remote control.

I forced Mr. B to watch, and he and I were both impressed with CeCe's vocal ability. And while I disliked "Tennessee", I really enjoyed seeing Arrested Development put their own twist on "Heaven". As long as one of those two won, I was pleased.

The other performances? Bleah. During the second songs, the rest of them felt like karaoke. All imitation, no original flair. Mr. B thought it was hysterical to see someone covering an Idol's hit, while I just kept yelling at Tiffany to shut up if she was just going to try and do a Kelly Clarkson knock-off version of the song.

But at least her remake of "I Think We're Alone Now" had her touch to it. It wasn't just a carbon copy of the previous version - it was popped up and bouncy. Last night, she was even doing the same embellishments as Kelly during the first half of the song. Bo-ring.

My summary of the show is up at:

http://www.realitytvworld.com/index/articles/story.php?s=3545

Cece did the best job last night, as the article says. But I thought Tiffany did an alright job last night. You see worst singers in the top 10 on Idol. I think she copied Kelly Clarkson to a tea. But she was no Cece.

As for Arrested Development--they would be the Black Eyed Peas of the '90's if they were market right. The lead singer of the group sings better than the Black eyed Peas singer. I also thought their rendition of Heaven was interesting, however more of an original song then a remake.

I thought CeCe did the best job too. Loverboy was good, I thought, but Flock of Seagulls absolutely sucked on both songs. I could just hear Simon Cowell....."that was hideous."

Arrested Development was good, but you have to like their style, and I don't.

Tiffany did OK.

Does anyone else think this is a weird show? It feels like it's all fluff and no substance and really, really pathetic.

I'm ranking them just for fun. I'll rank them both on singing ability and on how much I enjoyed their performance (my personal taste in music -- and yes it shows I grew up with 80's music).

Singing Ability:
1.) Arrested Development (the only ones to be really original with their up to date song).
2.) Tiffany
3.) CeCe
4.) Loverboy
5.) Flock of Seagulls (Really awful!)

Enjoyed Performance:
1.) Tiffany (Liked her choice of songs)
2.) Loverboy (Working for the Weekend brings back good memories)
3.) CeCe (Really good singing, but the dancers were too much)
4.) Arrested Development (not a fan of rap music)
5.) Flock of Seagulls (Bad singing and a horrible performance)

The answer to your question is no--because they still sell out arenas and don't usually do bar gigs.

As for the show, it is a bit campy, but I like it just to see who still has it and has gotten worst over time. Plus its funny to see groups from the '90's and '80's and compare them to our new stars and see how far music has (in some cases has not)changed.

With the possible exception of Bon Jovi, none of those people I listed has had a hit in years. They are living off past career accomplishments.

How about Robert Plant? He is playing a small venue in my area...Loverboy recently played a bigger venue than Plant is playing. Is Robert Plant a hasbeen?

All of the ones you said had more than two hits--I would say at least five hits to each of their names. You are right that they haven't had hits recently, but they still sell out arenas. The contestants on the show never do anymore. And I assume Loverboy did their concert in Canada, where they have a better audience.

As for Robert Plant, if you want to call the lead singer of Led Zeppelin a has been, be my guest. But don't let the Led Zeppelin fans hear you.
