"Women made a big mistake..."
Posted by AresMars on 03-30-01 at 10:58 AM
By creating a voting block against the men they have exposed themselves as not being team players. Unlike Survivor this show is stressing the importance of team work, like real boot camp. Voting according to your emotions as opposed to what is best for the team is going to cost the ladies (term is used loosely). Down the road when one of these females is squad leader what are the odds the men are going to give a 100%? Zero. An argument can be made that the men voting for Meyers was also based on emotion as opposed to voting for the disabled pig farmer but consider who was/is the biggest detriment to the team? The injured recruit or the man causing friction on the team? As a side note I like how everyone can see who voted for the bootee. Alliances won't be invisible.

I totally agree with you, AresMars. The only problem is that this Female Alliance can be pretty tough to break in the voting. Park's alliance of gung-ho recruits could be picked apart one-by-one, even if they do lay down on the job. The women and Meyer have 7 strong votes for whoever they want. This one might be over before it hardly begins. This was brought up in other threads, but just how DO they enforce this rigorous military discipline and deal with these Survivor-type social/alliance issues as well? A "Meyer" in a real bootcamp would be subjected to some considerable break area procedures to drill that attitude out of him. But if they don't vote him out, what can be done?
P.S. AresMars, I like your signature logo.

Are we sure it's an alliance? I mean, what I got from it was that the women felt like Park was being a bit too bossy for not even being the squad leader, and that was the motivation. However, I agree that it may not be a wise road to go down in the future.. ie; women against men in voting alliances..I wish there were a way to make that a non issue, but..lol.. art is imitating life I suppose....

.....what about the "screw you, you're going with me!" rule. As the guys start getting targeted they can bring a woman with them to try and even the playing field.
We should start a thread just trying to examine what this odd rule does to the dynamics of playing this type of game, i.e. how it affects alliance formation, standing out as opposed to flying under the radar etc.
Being in an alliance may not be the smartest thing in the long run of this game. I see a war of attrtion amongst competeing alliances developing.
Plus, in this format it is every man for themselves from the get go unlike Survivor...does that mean you need an 8 person alliance to win?

Well, from a re-examination of the show on tape, I observed that Meyer, Big Heavy (the one who said he was gonna be the winner), and five women were allied against Park. Five guys, including Park, and one female were in the group voting against Meyer. Park was gone without being able to force retribution. We have to think that Haar (Pig Farming Fat Girl) is not going to physically last, so the next person out may not get retribution. We also have to consider that in a battle of attrition, those women keep the upper hand, for a while at least.I agree that we should closely examine the dynamic of that rule. This show might be more fun than Survivor for guessing waxees because of some very strange interpersonal/social dynamics and the rules concerning "you're coming with me" and a squad leader being able to get immunity.

If he was in a real military unit, Meyer would have had an appointment with a 'blanket party'...Its when you take someone who isn't being a team player and you wrap him a woolen blanket and take the boots to him. The blanket prevents him from ratting-out anyone to the DIs and also keeps a lot of visible marks from showing up from the boots.
Meyer will not last long here, either...

In "Full Metal Jacket" they used soap wrapped in towels to beat down the offender. I have also heard of sticks, clubs and bare fists being used. If the D.I.s were to start punishing everyone else for Meyer's attitude, something would happen. But so far, the DI's have not resorted to that. It might happen real soon, though.*** Contradictions don't exist. If you are faced with a contradiction, check your premises. You will find that one of them is wrong. -- Ayn Rand, Atlas Shrugged

Now THAT would be interesting..The whole platoon getting punished for the actions of one.. Just imagine how that would change them all..LOL
This show really has potential.. I hope it can rise to the occasion.

Vamp, that's what they do in the real military. If someone acts like a Meyer, then they punish the whole squad for that person's actions. For example, if I had been the DI, I would have had EVERYONE being punished that night when they were punishing Meyer. Except I'd do it at 11pm.. at bedtime... and everyone (men and women) would be out there in their underwear or sleepwear, not fully clothed. To make it worse, I'd have Meyer stand at parade rest in front of them, then the rest of them would be doing pushups, situps, etc. until they were exhausted. I'd be telling them all along "You're doing this for your buddy Meyer the comedian.", then turn to Meyer and say "Your buddies are working hard for you, comedian."
Then I leave them alone with Meyer for the evening.

....or they could have Meyer eat a doughnut ala "Full Metal Jacket" while everyone else cleans and straightens out his messy locker.

1. It hurts like hell (assumed)
2. clever product placement opportunity....instead of "Have a Coke and a smile" how about "Have a Coke and a hemorhage"

Is this being filmed in Florida? They could use oranges in a towel (ala "The Grifters") and get a promo for the Orange Growers Association. But to speculate, and I mentioned this on some other board, I don't see how they can really motivate (punish) anyone to work really hard on this show. I'm guessing that the slacker brigade will start bumping off the gung-ho, I've-got-something-to-prove dopes who were practicing their drills at night.
This show sucks!

A-O!...O-A! Me thinks Meyer is a "wanna be" guy that could never get into the "real" military because he is a total butthead who is NOT a team player, and doesn't know how to conform...I want to see this guy get his just desserts... in a BIG way! If he makes it very far, I will be disillusioned(sp) That's.."fer shure"***GO KATHERINE***

Since Park was ousted for being too "bossy" the votes against him were not for the betterment of the team and the non-Park voters know this. I have a lot respect for the lone lady who voted her conscience instead of emotions. If this group hopes to win rewards, hopefully they get better an extra hour of sleep spare me, they need to think strategically. What is the ultimate goal? To get to the final two were they will compete one on one with another recruit. Getting rid of Parks is a good move as far as dumping a serious competitor but it’s too early in the game and will hurt their chances at winning future rewards. Someone else had mention that they should have split this into two 8 man squads competing against each other and I couldn’t agree more. How about if you had the 2 squads, losers have to dismiss someone and the recruit dismissed gets to select someone from the other squad to go with them.
As far as code reds Meyers is in need of a “brush bath”. The recruits bath Mr. Meyers sans water with brillo pads and steel wool. I know thats old corps and it leaves a few marks but it's a lesson that never needs repeating.

My guess would be that when you are booted you would take the person with you that you do not want to win the money. So I don't know if the men would take a woman to try and help their remaining team mates. Unless there is a woman they particularly don't like. I think it will be more of a revenge thing. Out of spite you will have the satisfaction of knowing someone you hate doesn't win either. (Meyer could be in trouble if a few guys get booted.)
