"Is Ozzy judged in life for being Hispanic?"
Posted by aquariaqueen on 12-19-06 at 10:28 AM
Don't know where to really to put this post but...He doesn't look Hispanic to me, I don't think he would be judged here in the midwest as being Latino, Mexican, whatever. Do you think he's judged for being Hispanic where he lives? He looks more caucasian than I do!
I think he would be judged more for being a porn star than a waiter! Do you really think he's a waiter? Why didn't they put actor? We don't have beaches, so he would be lost as a surfer dude, he'd have to be a snowboarder instead.

LAST EDITED ON 12-19-06 AT 10:39 AM (EST)I agree with you. ozzy did not give the hispanic vibe. He had no accent, he didn't look it, and his name wasn't even hispanic. The ironic thing about it is I believe Nate is hispanic...last name Gonzalez.
As far as the waiter thing......i am not sure why they just don't say actor for these people. Not sure what Jonathon's profession was...but look at his resume on IMDB.....he has a nice acting background. For some reason they shy away from saying that the contestants are actors...maybe because they know almost everyone on this show wants an acting career.
Here is Jonathon's acting background....the most extensive I ahve seen out of any contestent ever on the show.

The ironic thing about it is I believe Nate is hispanic...last name Gonzalez. LOL! My friend, last names mean almost nothing when you are trying to determine someone's race.

He may be. But I wouldn't jump to that conclusion based solely on his name. Adoption can confuse things, or there may have been one hispanic man in three generations of parentage and Nate's family just happens to take their name from him.

LAST EDITED ON 12-19-06 AT 12:04 PM (EST)There are lots of ways to have a Spanish sounding last name without coming from Latin America.
Not all caucasians that moved to Latin America were only from Spain, so there is a mix of last names, and if one grandfather was not hispanic that could give you a non-hispanic last name, after all.
Also, just because you parents were from Central or South America 3 generations ago (or from Korea or China or any other country that doesn't look typically northern/central European) mean you will speak English with an accent. Heck a lot of kids born here from immigrant parents don't have strong accents. Heck my Dad didn't even know one word of English before he started school. He had no accent at all, he even lost the Canadian in it after living in the US for so many years.
Lack of an accent, or what last name you have doesn't change where your parents, grandparent, or great grand parents were born.

He doesn't have what some people consider a typical look for a Hispanic, but then it is a culture/language distincthion more than a race. There is a mix of native peoples, whites, blacks and probably some other mixed in. That means you get a very wide range of what people look like.

I thought he was Tarzan.

Wouldn't that make him African American?

Uh, no. Tarzan is caucasian, at least every Tarzan I've ever seen.

A person is considered Hispanic if the father is Hispanic. I have a friend who's married to an Hispanic man. Their kids, although blonde-haired and blue-eyed, are considered to be Hispanic.

Yes, I understand that...but do you think people stereotype him wholly on looks?Look at some Asians and African descendants, most can't deny their backgrounds as much as Ozzy.

LAST EDITED ON 12-19-06 AT 12:10 PM (EST)What does it matter if he can pass as white?
Doesn't change where you came from. There are always a few people in an ethincity that can pass as another. My bro is just as Northern/Central European as I am yet has people come up to him and ask him things in Spanish.
ETA: I'm sure even if people can't peg his ethnicity immediately he has had the same sorts snap judgements people make about everyone else just based on how they look.

My question is that if he can pass as white, is he treated how minorities say minorities are treated. This isn't necessarily to bash, but to give different points of view.
I just cant imagine him suffering from being treated like a stereotyped Mexican.

Does every single person in his family always pass for white? Did he pass as well when he was a kid?Maybe he knows how hard it is for the people in his life that don't pass and he feels that.
People don't have to always have extreme direct negative energy coming their way to know how it is for the rest of the community.

My husband is sometimes tagged as hispanic because of his last name, which is actually Portugese. (he's half Portugese but has light skin - the Scotch-Irish part of his heritage won out)So fun when we get telemarketers that call speaking only Spanish. But I do not say, "no speakee"

Hey, my DH is Portugese too! He's fairly dark, big brown eyes. When we vacation people always think he's Spanish or Italian. One time we were in PEI vacationing and this little kid ran up to him on the beach and asked him if he was someone famous. He answered "yes". Little kid says "cool" then runs away.
I guess my sweetie stuck out like a sore thumb in that little province.

This is why race is ridiculous. My puro Mexican boyfriendis fair skinned blonde hair and blue eyed. You cannot say that someone looks Mexican than you can say that someone looks American. Very, very few countries have "pure" races left and those that do are in Asia. Mexican are mixed just like Americans are and believe it or not there are Black Mexicans. Take a trip to Mexico from Northern Mexico (pale) to Mexico City (light brown) to Vera Cruz (black) to Cancun(brown). A trip with open eyes will kill all your stereotypes.Eventho people do not recognize my Mexican boyfriend (without an accent) as Latino at first glance, he can tell you that he is still judged as a Latino whether people know his last name or not.
