2. "Moving Up, Moving Out" |
LAST EDITED ON 08-27-08 AT 11:30 PM (EST)So, on tonight's show Jerry brought out last night's semi-finalists and paired them up in like title bout matches to let us know who was moving up, who was moving out. Round 1: Extreme Dance FX vs. Ronny B. In the battle between two anthills I don't much care about, Extreme Dance FX came out on top, say good-bye to Ronny B. Round 2: Shimshi vs. Jessica Price. I like both of these acts but doubt either can ultimately win, still in terms of which has the most potential I'll agree with America, Jessica Price moves up, Shimshi moves out. Round 3: The Cadence vs. DC Cowboys. Hardworking college kids vs. office workers with a fun hobby, was anyone surprised The Cadence got the nod and the Cowboys got the boot? Round 4: Neal E. Boyd vs. Derrick Barry. Least surprising finish of the night, the guy with real talent moved up, the Britney impersonator who probably shouldn't have made it this far anyway moved out. Round 5: The James Gang vs. Elite. Okay, tough pairing, I would have been okay with it either way it could have gone, and this one came down to the judges deciding as these acts came in 5th and 6th in America's vote. Piers voted James Gang. Sharon voted James Gang, with apologies. Thank God the Brits had the presence of mind to keep the Hoff from making a decision! And kudos to the James Gang guys for showing sympathy and support for their defeated competitor, sweet little kid could have probably stomped them all into the ground had she been so inclined.

3. "Round 2 8/27" |
Tonight's performers, in order of appearance!Beyond Belief Dance Company (dance troop). I really enjoyed these guys tonight. Paul Santos (Sinatra impersonator). Not his best performance, but the guy has class, and what he lacks in actually looking like Frank he makes up for with genuine singing talent. Kazual (singing group). I have to agree with the judges, they harmonize very well, and I'll go further and say singing and dancing at the same time is something that really does impress me. But the lead vocals were weak, they need to work on that. Zooperstars (the ultimate drag act). They were amusing even if Piers doesn't get it. Ultimately, they should be aiming at hosting a Saturday morning children's show, not headlining in Vegas. In my day we had the Banana Splits, hey there's a place for it. The Wright Kids (sibling singers/musicians). Cute. Let's all go "awwww...!" I thought they made a terrible song choice tonight, but at least they made up for it by skipping most of the lyrics and just repeating and repeating and repeating the chorus. Jonathan Arons (dancing trombonist). Fun act, though I could do without the Tbone between the legs move. I thought this was supposed to be a family show. Daniel Jens (singer/strummer/military guy). Nice if unfortunately weak performance tonight, he better step it up if he manages to survive this round. Slippery Kittens (burlesque dance troop). WHOO-HOOOO!!! I agree with Piers about the tattoos, but hey what has that to do with their act! I'll be okay with watching them perform again if I have to, no seriously I mean it! George the Giant (sideshow freak). I thought his escape artist pinata act tonight was his best bit yet. Queen Emily (singer). Finally, someone who can give Boyd a run for the money. Great singer, and not even her best performance to date, though she dressed up marvelously.

6. "Round 3 9/2" |
Tonight's acts:Texas State Strutters (dance troupe), okay they got energy. Michael Stelo-Smith (opera singer), this year's second chance return from last year, he ought to move on the the next round but we're approaching the point of singers knocking each other out of a win Bruce Block (magician), cute act this time but he needs to step it up Shequida (femal impersonator), that was horrible Taubl Family (musical family), a very good performance this time Jonathan Burkin (baton twirler), better outfit, the guy can really do some amazing things with his batons (let's try to keep the jokes relatively clean shall we) Sarah Lenore (singer), nice performance, with a bit of training she could make it as a pop star SickStep (dance troupe), good show but I thought they were pushing themselves, which is okay but it shouldn't be obvious Matthew Piazzi (impersonator), lot of energy tonight but it was missing something... puppets maybe. Joseph Hall (Elvis impersonator), not his best performance to date, audience seemed to like it, I think Piers and Sharon maybe realized there's something kinda bizarre about an Elvis impersonator need AGT to get to Vegas.

15. "Round 4 9/3" |
LAST EDITED ON 09-04-08 AT 08:55 AM (EST)Tonight's performances were by: Dallas Desperados Dancers (dance troop), and, sadly, the Texas State Strutters were better, heck even the DC Cowboys were better, than these ladies tonight, it had all the look of a routine that just hadn't been practiced and honed to show level Bryan Cheatham (singer), nice singing, I loved how they took him to task for all the Chippendales stuff, so to speak Flambeaux (fire-eater/flame-breather), that was just weird in a very unexciting back burner way Kaityn Maher (4-year-old singer), so cute, does manage to carry a tune and remember the words, her singing voice should develop quite well once her mouth grows to fit her tongue, has some ways to go to reach Shirley Temple level performances Dorae Saunders (Tina Turner impersonator), you know, I have to respect an act that admits that lipsync isn't a talent, I thought the dancing and other performance aspects were quite well done Donald Braswell (singer), nailed a difficult if schlocky (given the venue) song, should move on if only to help spoil the chances of a singer winning this thing Indiggo (twin Romanian singer-dancers), I don't know if that act should be called vaudeville, burlesque, cabaret or what, but it sure was odd, and I did get the humor; Piers was right they are the worst singers and dancers left in the competition, but at least they look like they look and have the chutzpah a go-go thing going for them Tapping Dads (tap dance troop), it was okay tap dancing, caught some moments of flair, but where did they dig up that awful version of "Puttin' on the Ritz"? Eli Mattsen (singer/musician), holding the stage with just a piano, mike and singing talent, that's up there with pulling off a singing-dancing routine in the professionally tough realm, guy managed to hold his own though I didn't care for his song choice Nuttin But Stingz (brother violin act), saved the best for last this time, these guys just own the stage and are fascinating to watch and listen to, great performance And Piers earned a new nickname, Quickbuzz Morgan, he was in a special deadly mood tonight.

The judges haven't really pressed Kaitlyn on anything, probably because of her age. I don't think there's any way she could sustain a 90 minute Vegas show, certainly not on a routine daily basis.

I think the judges are just hoping that America makes that decision for them so they don't have to be the ones to tell her 'no'. That said, I think they'll get what they deserve if America makes them do it eventually, anyway. She's cute and she's certainly talented for a 4-yr. old, but there's no way she could carry a 90 minute Vegas show, nor should she be put in the position of: 1) thinking she could and then having to hear otherwise at the very end, and 2) have that kind of pressure put on her 4-yr. old shoulders. I'm sorry, but I really have to wonder just what her parents are thinking and what they think is in it for themselves. And, just what the judges know about the parents (assuming anything) that we don't that have allowed them, in good conscience, to keep her in this kind of a contest. Smokeysmom's comfort

22. "RE: Agree" |
God help me, I can't help but wonder what her life would be like if she actually won. She's FOUR YEARS OLD! I doubt that she can even read well enough to read the lyrics of the songs she sings. (But, I can't discount that possibility. I read pretty well as a 4-yr. old) Even if she can read the lyrics and knows how to read music (again, not impossible, but, I kinda doubt it. I see her at a point where she hears and repeats, not at a stage where she's reading staffs), what's in store for her if she wins? TV and movies have people under contract and labor laws for film are pretty strict - but still open to interpretation, aka Kid's Nation. I'm not at all sure that a Vegas show contract would follow the same kind of rules - even assuming that those rules are written in the kid's favor, anyway. She's FOUR, for God's sake. I'm sorry. I don't care how talented she might be, or how much she might enjoy the attention she's getting at the age of four. This should NOT be the defining point in her life. This should not be the "MAKE IT" or "BREAK IT" point. I doubt seriously that she has any idea what either of those terms mean. She shouldn't have to find out. Not at this age. Smokeysmom's comfort

LAST EDITED ON 09-07-08 AT 01:51 PM (EST)I understand EMOTIONAL feelings for this little girl run deep for some, but seriously? No! No matter what age she is, she's simply just not good. Cute? Sure! Fun to watch for a minute and a half? Ok. Talented? No. Talent is something that needs to be worked on an devloped over time. It's a shame they even allowed kids to be on a show like this where the prize is performing in a venue that they otherwise would not even have ever been allowed to be in! I'm sure the parents only did it to expose her for THEIR dream of getting her a potential commerical, tv, or film career. The Producers fell for it to draw a few more viewers. Shame on both of them! Bring on the REAL talent...or change the name of the show.

My guess is that the show's producers see it as a TV show first, not strictly speaking a talent show, and they know that child performers have viewer-appeal. They also go for the sympathetic background stories on many performers, not because those have anything to do with talent, it is just about viewership.

28. "Title bouts" |
LAST EDITED ON 09-10-08 AT 00:08 AM (EST)In the first round Nuttin But Stringz paired off against Indiggo. Indiggo went bu-bye, Nuttin But Stringz makes the top 20. In the second round Flambeaux paired off against Kaitlyn Maher. Little 4-year-old whupped the fire-eater, say bu-bye to Flambeaux. On a personal note, shucks. Flambeaux massively sucked last week but the longer America keeps sweet little Kaitlyn in this contest the more it amounts to child abuse. In the third round Dorea Saunders paired off against Eli Mattsen, darn shame when two good acts have to pair off and one get eliminated. Say bu-bye to Dorea. Top 20, Eli's comin'. Round four, Dallas Desperados Dancers vs. Donald "America's Choice" Braswell. The Triple-Ds were clearly outclassed, bu-bye Triple-Ds, Donald gets to keep living the impossible dream. Round five, judges choice, Bryan Cheatham against the Ta-ta-ta-tapping Dads! In the end The Hoff gave the nod to Tapping Dads. Seriously, I couldn't believe it myself, Tapping Dads evicted Chippendales escapee, I couldn't believe it. Bu-bye Bryan. Hey, The Hoff, what in the heck were you thinking with? Note to producers, hope you're reading this stuff: Next year can we just do away with judges choices and have a top 16? Please.
