"Season 3 Top 20 Week"
Happy happy Top 20 week, happy happy Top 20 week!

Have we finally reached the point where there's more actual talent than not?

Three shows this week, oboy oboy oboy oboy! 10 tonight, 10 tomorrow, big reveals on Thursday, what fun.

I really really don't like most shows that are on too many times a week, but on the plus side at least AGT isn't Big Brudda.

1. "9/9/08 show"
Performing tonight, in order of appearance...

The Cadence (drum line). These guys were really on tonight, stepped up their performance with a lot of flare, or flair, whatever. Excellent kick-off.

Queen Emily (singer). Oh man, oh man, oh man. We knew she could belt them out, this week she stepped down a level and went melodic, fantastic performance.

The Wright Kids (singers/musicians). Let's all get up and dance to a song that was a hit before Donny Osmand was born! These kids were great tonight on a really really old and stupid song, but at least it was upbeat and they pulled it off.

The James Gang (vocal/dance group and/or boy band). Ohmy heck, they wrecked on of my favorite jazz/blues tunes! Seriously, I love the song, there was some good stuff in the performance, but it was way off somehow, lacked energy or something.

Daniel Jens (soldier-singer). Unfortunately, I thought this was a weak performance, I'll be surprised if he survives this round. Judge Piers, though, was too harsh, so he may survive on a sympathetic backlash.

Zooperstars (drag act in balloon/device outfits). Fortunately, this was the worst performance they've given thus far, only morons would vote these bozos to the finale. HEY, AMERICA, PLEASE, LET'S GET RID OF THESE JERKS, THANK YOU!

Neal E. Boyd (singer). Ignore the sympathetic backstory and mother angle and all that garbage, this guy is a great performer and delivers every time he performs, A+.

Jessica Price (country singer gal). Crud. This week she chose to perform a transition song that would absolutely work as a transition song in a concert performance, but was just unimpressive as a stand-alone performance in a talent competition.

Crud.

Extreme Dance FX (dance troop). I very much liked these guys this week, good show. I also have a longstanding complaint with the producers/directors here. Dance acts should be shown in medium and long shots, nothing else, let us see the dance! Piers said something tonight about Fred Astaire's worst nightmare, relating to another act, he was dead wrong. Fred Astaire's worst nightmare was dance acts not being presented properly, and AGT does a lousy lousy job of it. No cutaways to audience or the judges, whatever, let us watch the dance you moron producer/directors! Dance is purely motion, poetry of motion, a visual performance, let us see that whole damned performance, dumdums, quit it with the cutaways.

Paul Salos (Frank Sinatra impersonator). From the first second he started singing I thought the mix was wrong, and it turned out it was, he wasn't getting the feedback in the monitors he should have been getting. Frank himself would have had enough seasoning to make up for that, but unfortunately Paul hasn't had enough for that and this performance suffered. To his credit, he made no excuses. Somewhere Frank was looking down and saying, "Hey, buddy, you gave it a shot, good for you!"

2. "RE: 9/9/08 show"
Thanks for the recap DABO!

TiVO was all set to record that new show "FRINGE" and I forgot to make the exception for AGT! Missed the whole thing, but I feel like you brought me up to speed!

I can easily pick out 5 I'd like to see again from that group, so this round was easy!

I say "YES" to: CADENCE, QUEEN EMILY, NEIL BOYD, JESSICA PRICE, and EXTREME DANCE.

Regarding your comment about filming the dance groups, I totally agree! I've had that long-standing beef with the SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE producers since the show began. Dance presentations should not be edited the same as some MTV rock concert. I need to see their entire bodies, not close-ups of their head and reaction shots of people in the audience.

When will they learn??? HAHA!

agree with all of your summations...standouts to me.
Zooperstars, they were just fall down bad.
jamesgang, off key, and whats with only three of them singing?
jens, just not up to the singers that are left

emily/boyd, boy can they bring emotion to the tv screen
extreme danceers, great act, but i don't see a group dance act winning.

piers, the worst comment about sending jens back to defend us.
sharon, how BIg is your #####? lol

LAST EDITED ON 09-11-08 AT 06:55 PM (EST)

LAST EDITED ON 09-11-08 AT 02:20 AM (EST)

Tonight's performers really stepped it up.

Encore performance, Terry Fator! And Winston! And Maynard! Last year's winner turned up and knocked one out of the park to kick off tonight's events and remind us all of what the show is all about, location location location. And promote his new book, due out soon, Who's the Dummy Now?

SickStep (hiphop dance troop). Amazingly, the directors actually presented a dance act tonight in terms of letting dance be dance, mostly long and medium shots, just only one dumb cutaway to the judges and audience, it was great. I have no idea how the directors figured out that dance should be presented that way, let dance be dance, totally amazing.

As for the performance itself, these guys really stepped it up, energized the live audience, outdid themselves.

Donald Braswell (singer). I have to admit it, I was unfamiliar with the song he chose tonight, but he pulled it off, really delivered. I think he needs to stretch himself a bit, all his performances have pretty much the same emotional level, but I got to admit he makes it work.

Joseph Hall (Elvis impersonator). His best performance to date, he nailed it. I still don't know why an Elvis imersonator should need a TV show in order to get to Vegas but the guy pulls off all the Elvis stuff fabulously.

Taubl Family (singing/musical group). Much as I did enjoy their performance tonight, it's starting to seem to me they pretty much perform the same bit over and over and over and over, it all has the same level.

Sarah Lenore (country singer). She took a big chance tonight went outside her comfort level, a big song, a diva song; and I don't care what the judges thought because I thought she pulled it off.

Getting the idea tonight's acts all went all out? You betcha.

Nuttin But Stringz (street violinists). Oh my heck! I don't know how they do it but every time they perform these guys just bring their performance up and up, they are absolutely fascinating. They didn't even need the background dancers.

Kaityn Maher (singer). Okay, she's a sweet kid and gives a very nice sweet performance every time she takes the stage. She has no chance of winning his thing, not because she's just four years old but because her level of talent, even for a 4-year-old, impressive as it is, just doesn't stand the test.

Judge Piers gently tried to clue her in she may have reached the end of her run, judge The Hoff picked up on that and gently added his own agreement. The Hoff even! Even the Hoff! America, take note, give this kid a break, don't vote her to the final 10, give another act that potentially can win their chance.

Tapping Dads (tap dance troop). I didn't think these guys should have made the top 20 but tonight they pulled out the stops and gave it their all, it was very entertaining and high energy. The talent level really isn't there, but fortunatly they have actual well-paying day jobs to return to; I mean, face it, headlining a Vegas show with topless showgirls backing them up, the topless showgirls would be the real show.

But, seriously, somehow the directors tonight did a relatively good job of letting dance be dance; not perfect, but much moremuch better.

Eli Mattson (singer/musician). A guy, a piano, a mike, I cannot tell you how much this guy impresses me, he holds his own on pure talent alone, no fluff. And he made a great song selection tonight. My one complaint with him, on some level all his performances seem the same maudlin same old, he needs to really break out.

Jonathan Burkin (baton twirler). The best novelty act this season by far, he pulls it off. And "Pinball Wizard" as a theme for the performance of the "Baton Wizard" tonight, great theme selection, and a very impressive show.

In conclusion: Tonight's show was the best AGT episode to date, most of the acts really gave it their all, I have no idea which of tonight's acts will advance to the next stage.

if the show is indeed only about talent like we are constantly told; how come a four year old makes it. you americans can screw nbc and their producers who let the "talent" through. the judges were for show only; just like american idol.keep voting for the kid and let nbc figure out how to let a 4 year old be a headliner. you americans deserve it.

5. "RE: Season 3 Top 20 Week"
Any idea if the results show will be the top 5 from each night or the top 10 from both nights?

Here's my thoughts/picks:

If they go top 5 per night, here's who I would like to see stay/go:

Tuesday
Stay:
Queen Emily - I love her but I actually thought some of her weaknesses showed the other night. I'd like to see her stay a little longer.
Neal E. Boyd - OMH, that man can sing!
Jessica Price - Not a good song choice this week but she should stay.
Paul Salos - Due to my crazy schedule, this is the first time I've ever seen him perform. I liked him and hope he makes it through.
Extreme Dance FX - It was hard to judge their performance with the lousy editing work by NBC. They were pretty good. I think I'd like to see them move on.

Go:
The Cadence - Pretty good but not excellent.
The James Gang - This was another act that I've never seen before due to my crazy schedule. I was not impressed.
The Wright Kids - That little boy has a really good voice but I'm not sure they're top 10.
Daniel Jens - I have not been much of a fan of his at all. I don't think he should move on. He needs more training. I, too, am afraid he may survive due to sympathetic backlash.
Zooperstars - Funny how both Sharon & the Hoff want them gone when they're the ones responsible for putting them in the top 20. Karma's a bitch.

Wednesday
Stay:
SickStep - Pretty good.
Donald Braswell - Another one that can really, really sing. If he makes it, will he split the votes with Neil E. Boyd?
Sarah Lenore - I think she had a slightly off night but she's good. I think she should get another chance.
Eli Mattson - The song he picked actually had a limited range. I'd like to see him pick something different next time. But the guy can sing!
Jonathan Burkin - The kid does not look like he's athletic in any way but he's amazing. There are reality shows for singers and dancers but not baton twirlers. I'd like to see him go through.

Go:
Joseph Hall - Tonight's performance was better than his last. But like Dabo said, why does an Elvis impersonator need a TV show in order to get to Vegas? There are better contestants here.
Taubl Family - I did not enjoy their performance at all. I think their done.
Nuttin But Stringz - I will probably catch some flack for this decision but I think they should go. I am a violinist and I heard a lot of musical mistakes in their last two performances. They shouldn't advance due to that. However, I have to admit that their style is fabulous and they should get a lot of credit for that. They need to practice more and then come back.
Kaityn Maher - She's cute as a button. That little speech impediment is sweet. She sings really well for a 4-year-old. It's amazing that she can remember all the words to the songs and stand there in front of a huge audience and perform without freaking out. She needs to go but I see her getting the sympathy vote. She's not going to win and I'm wondering how big here melt-down will be.
Tapping Dads - I thought their performance was much better and I enjoyed it (in spite of the weird camera shots). There was a lot of energy to it and everyone performed well. It was almost like they wanted to show Piers that he was wrong. They should go, though.

I got sliced!

6. "RE: Season 3 Top 20 Week"
I agree it was a great show last night in that EVERY performer actually was better than their previous performance.

That said, while it was a little harder to narrow the field, I was able to choose 5 that I'd like to see compete again as part of the Final 10. The first 3 were easy, the last two were a toss up:

I say "YES" to:

SICK STEP
NUTTIN BUT STRINGZ
ELI
JONATHAN BURKIN
ELVIS

My rationale is that Vegas needs great VARIETY acts, and SICK STEP and NUTTIN BUT STRINGZ fits that bill. ELI is a good performer and could easily fit in with a band or orchestra to keep a show going 8 times a week.

JONATHAN and ELVIS were my tough ones. JONATHAN is an exciting performer and there is plenty of room for both fire AND amazing baton twirling on a Vegas Stage. The PINBALL WIZARD adaptation is what really sold me. He could adapt to many other scene changes too, as long as he keeps adding new elements. A great novelty act. ELVIS is better than many other impersonators on stages nightly all over Vegas. I don't think He should win this, but I do think he deserves another couple nights of exposure to be discovered.

My eliminations were correspondingly easy and tough at the same time.

Don Braswell - I know guys like this and he is in it for a Musical Theater gig. He does not have the varied repertoire or the charisma to hold the stage as a headliner. Go audition for Phantom if that's what you want.

Taubles Family - Enough is enough. Stick to the County Fair circuit and they will perform for years. The singing is not strong enough and last night proved it.

Sara - I think last night blew it for her. Not versatile or talented enough to stand out from the million other teen singers out there.

Kaitlyn - Um....no.

Tappin Dads - It came down to a choice between Elvis and this group. While they really did an awesome job last night, there is no way we're giving a contract to that many people in a group who can only do what they do every night. If there was some singing, non-tap dancing, and gymnastics thrown into their act, they may have had my vote.

GOOD LUCK TO ALL!!!

BRING ON THE TOP TEN!!!

Nuttin But Stringz.totally.rocks! They are my pick to go all the way.

I think Sarah and Taubl family made poor song choices, but are incredibly talented. I'd be happy with either or both in top 10.

Baton Boy...not so much. Watching one performance is fun, but to sustain a whole show...there's only so much you can do with flaming batons.

Elvis impersonator headlining in Vegas? Can you say redundant? He should just go join the Flying Elvii and be done with it.

Still the only act I go to watch over and over again on You Tube is Nuttin But Stringz.

8. "RE: Season 3 Top 20 Week"
My Top 10 Picks (in order):

From Tuesday (was not overly impressed with this group):
Neal E. Boyd (love him - more opera please!)
Extreme Dance FX (good dancing and energy)
The Cadence (I like their energy too)
Queen Emily (pretty good but thought she was a little flat)
Paul Salos (wish I could put Donald here instead)

From Wednesday (FULL of talent tonight):
Eli Mattson (excellent talent)
Nuttin But Stringz (love these guys)
Sarah Lenore (bad song choice, but I thought she did good)
Jonathan Burkin (fun show to watch)
Joseph Hall (very cool, more talent than Donald)

If I had to pick 5 right now, they would be:
Neal E. Boyd
Eli Mattson
Nuttin But Stringz
Sarah Lenore
Jonathan Burkin

9. "RE: Season 3 Top 20 Week"
Okay. I can only base my selections on the performances presented this week, that's what I think is fair.

From Tuesday's show I would select:
The Cadence
Queen Emily
The Wright Kids
Neal E. Boyd
Extreme Dance FX

From Wednesday's show I would select:
SickStep
Sarah Lenore
Nuttin But Strings
Eli Mattson
Jonathan Burkin
Granted the concept of a baton twiller headlining a Vegas show does boggle the mind, but the guy was very creative in his "Pinball Wizard" theme on Wednesday, I would like to see if he has even more to bring to his performance.

11. "9/11/ Reveal Show"
LAST EDITED ON 09-12-08 AT 00:07 AM (EST)

Again they went with the title bout pairings in revealing who moves on and who says so long.

Bout #1: The Wright Kids vs. Zooperstars. The Kids hit the ball into the bleacher seats the other night with their performance of "Rockin' Robin" while the Zooperstars fell all over themselves, no surprise here, The Wright Kids are in the Top 10!

Bout #2: Neal E. Boyd vs. Queen Emily. I couldn't believe it, no way, no way! Two acts I thought were both absolutely guaranteed Top 10 slots up against each other, how could they possibly be going head to head so soon in an elimination bout! The judges overacted while everyone in the audience held their breath in astonishment, waiting... Then Jerry revealed it was a trick bout, they both made the Top 10!

Lousy dumb trick to play on us all.

Bout #3: The James Gang vs. Extreme Dance FX. To balance things back up this was another counterfeit pairing, both were eliminated. Shucks. Personally likeable and admirable as the guys in James Gang are, they've not been bringing their best to their most recent performances, but FX really should have made the Top 10.

Bout #4: The Cadence vs. Paul Salos. In a total suprise to me, considering the problems he had the other night, the Ghost of the Chairman of the Board moved up to the Top 10 while the Cadence, who totally rocked in their performance the other night, went so long.

Bout #5, Judges Decision: Daniel Jens vs. Jessica Price. I didn't think either of these acts should have made Top 10, and in a split decision the nod went to Jessica Price probably because Piers likes blondes, well who doesn't.

To be fair to Piers, however, he did try to correct the horrible thing he said to Jens earlier this week, explain he meant it in a totally respectful way and really admires the guy, but he now hopes the guy will go back to Iraq to perform for the troops even though he isn't Top 10worthy.

Yes, I'm being sarcastic, but that's what actually happened.

Bout #6: SickStep vs. Kaitlyn Maher. Upset of the night! Kaitlyn make the Top 10! Honestly!

In all seriousness, I like the kid and have enjoyed every one of her performances, and she did try to step it up a bit the other night, but she's clearly out of her league at this stage of the competition. I understand no one wants to make her cry but come on America, if it is really about talent and performance she is just a sweet kid way out of her league.

Bout #7: Donald Braswell vs. the Tapping Dads. No surprise here, Braswell makes the Top 10.

Bout #8: The Taubl Family vs. Nuttin But Stringz. Again, no surprise, Nuttin But Stringz is in the Top 10!

Bout #9: Sarah Lenore vs Eli Mattson. Shucks, two acts I thought should make Top 10, please let this be another counterfiet bout, please please please. It wasn't, Eli Mattson is in the Top 10. Okay. If it had to come down to one of the two of them, close, but that was the right choice.

Bout #10, Judges decision: Jonathan Burkin and his flaming batons vs. Joseph "Hunkahunka" Hall. Piers spouted some nonsense, a befuddled Sharon couldn't tell who was who and threw it in the Hoff's lap, The Hoff decided to take an Elvis impersonator to Vegas because, hey, tough decision, Elvis or flaming batons, tough decision, not like either of them is blondalicious.
