"Season 3 Top 5 -- Discuss"
My listings show only one program next week, a one-hour show on Wednesday from 9 to 10 pm (Eastern) for the top five final competition performances. After that the show will take a bit of a hiatus so Republicans and Democrats can try to figure out how to disqualify each other's votes.

Donald Braswell II (singer)

Eli Mattson (singer/piano man)

Neal E. Boyd (singer)

Nuttin But Stringz (violinists)

Queen Emily (singer)

In the order listed:

Donald Braswell II - Talented singer but lacking in range. While he sounds great, every song sounds the same. If he steps out of the box in the finals and sings something different, I may upgrade my opinion. Odds of winning: 20-1

Eli Mattson - Accomplished piano player and good singer. Needs to show more personality if he wants to make it in Vegas, and his song choices have been conservative, but he's got the makings of a great performer. Odds of winning: 2-1

Neal E. Boyd - Best pure singer left in the competition, would blow Donald Braswell out of the room in an opera sing-off. But does opera fill seats in Vegas? Odds of winning: 5-1

Nuttin But Stringz - An unusual musical combination. Not your average cover act-- these guys write it and perform it on their violins. While they're my favorite act, they may not be mainstream enough to win. Odds of winning: 4-1

Queen Emily - Great Motown sound and strong stage presence. But she's the weakest pure singer left, and Motown is getting pretty long in the tooth these days. Odds of winning: 10-1

If Wayne Newton can make it there, if Celine Dion can make it there, if Tiger Trainer Guys can make it there, LOL... Does everyone have to be Cirque du Soleil?

What does a Vegas Act really mean? There may be some permanent fixtures, so to speak, but acts like Pavorati, Elvis, Yo-yo Ma, Carlin, Galligher, the ever changing line-up of the Rat Pack, Magic Clown Who Tells Jokes and Magic Clown Buddy Who Never Speaks, typically just blow into town and do their run and move on. What does a Vegas Act really mean?

3. "9/24 performance show"
Since dabo is having computer problems, I will be doing the recap of last night's show.

We had six performers last night, all doing a great job.

First up, George Bush. He did a fabulous job reading from the teleprompter. He was sober and relatable, with none of his usual sneer-and-swagger style that typifies his usual performances. Well done.

Nuttin But Stringz - They performed the first piece they ever composed. It was a great performance. Personally I thought the Mary Poppins dancers detracted from the performance. The performance got a standing ovation from all 3 judges and Piers delcared them the winners.

Donald Braswell - He performed "You Lift Me Up." It was a nice performance but, in trying to jazz up the song and make it his own, I felt he went a little overboard. He definitely lost control on the last note, which Piers called him on. I felt he showed more personality than usual and connected with the audience. Sharon felt it was a "nice" performance and that his personality isn't as good as his voice. Donald took the criticsm well. Piers was a gentleman and told him that he's done well in this competition and proved the judges wrong.

Neil E Boyd - He went back to opera and performed a piece with which I was not familiar. I thought he did a great job. He has a beautiful voice. My husband agreed but added "if you like that sort of thing." This may hold him back from winning. Hoff said he was honored to be on this journey with Neil and Piers got a huge laugh when he agreed with David on national television. Sharon said he was sensational.

Eli Mattson - He performed "Against All Odds" by Phil Collins. Personally I felt it was not a good arrangement of the song. He took out most of the hooks which made the song unique but I have to admit the boy is very talented. Piers said that Eli has a distictinve and unique voice and that he shortened the odds with that performance. Sharon thinks he would be an amazing winner to represent American and the world.

Queen Emily - She performed "One Moment In Time." It started well but towards the end she got shrieky and shouty and she lost control on the 3rd to last note. She pushed herself too hard to out-do her previous performance. Piers said she performed with passion and emotion. It was her best performance but she won't win. Sharon called her a diva and Hoff called her a princess.

A point for all of us to discuss: America's Got Talent used to be about finding the best act in America. Now they've tacked on the Vegas show as one of the prizes. Do you think this changes the way America votes? Do you think that changes our perceptions of who is the best talent in America?

I got sliced!

4. "RE: 9/24 performance show"
Thanks for the recap, Grit, I missed the show last night.

First of all, ITA about the constant Vegas reference. How many times have we heard them ask if any particular act could sustain 90 minutes on a Vegas stage? Then let's just call the show America's Got a New Vegas Act. You're so right, this show was built on the premise of finding raw talent that would never have had a chance to surface, not to act as an agent for some Vegas casino that needs a new show.

And on that note, check the resumes of all of these stars. Many are already professionals. They have record deals, they've performed with big companies...I'd rather see Kaitlyn Maher up there than professionals. If they've had this much exposure already and still haven't made it big, there's a good reason for that.

All of that being said, my money is on Nuttin But Stringz all the way. They are by far the most talented and unique.

5. "RE: 9/24 performance show"
LAST EDITED ON 09-25-08 AT 11:05 PM (EST)

Amazingly, I can still access the internet even though the main computer is being problematic about being restored to full health.

Nuttin But Stringz gave a great creative performance, the I agree the staging with the background performers was distracting. These guys have the originality and creative points in the bag, but it still seemed to me they didn't show enough diversity.

Donald Braswell made an excellent song selection and did extend beyond his previous performance. He did have a bit of a stumble at the end but recovered (and covered) very nicely, a real pro.

Neal E. Boyd showed much more range this time, it was simply an exquisite performance. Those who don't get opera learn to sit through it, or whatever the "Pretty Woman" line was. (On a side note, though, at this point in the game it is not a good sign when the Hoff goes into his "You Are What This Show Is All About" drivel.) Scoring purely on artistic merit, Neal pulled it off.

Eli Mattson for once didn't go solo, he allowed himself to perform with a backing orchestra section, and he still owned the stage. Excellent song choice but I still felt the angst.

Mama Queen Emily. She showed more range this time, the song built and built, and unfortunately towards the end she had some difficulty. That was surprising to me since she usually has no difficulty going big. Still, it was an admirable effort.

In my opinion the top two performers were Nuttin But Stringz and Neal E. Boyd. One owned the new original angle, the other the establishment angle. Eli, the dark horse, could conceivably pull off an upset.

About the Vegas angle, do I think it changes how America votes? At this point in the game maybe, but Kaitlyn would never have survived to the top 10 had it made a difference previously.

Do I think it changes our perception about what is talent? I don't know. It shouldn't, I hope not, it is a wholly artificial consideration, unless I owned a Vegas casino and theater why would I even care.

But hey, that's showbiz.

6. "RE: 9/24 performance show"
I don't know which is worse, 15 (extra) minutes of Jerry Springer filler or 15 minutes of George W. Bush speechifying...

My rankings, based solely on the final five episode:

1. Nuttin but Stringz - Another week, another original composition, and this one was a good one. I liked it, and I continue to be impressed by what they do. I'd pay Vegas $$$ to watch these two.

2. Neal E. Boyd - Clearly the best pure singer of the finalists, and he did a great job with his song. I wouldn't be disappointed if he won.

3. Eli Mattson - Made a dud song choice on the biggest stage of all, and it may cost him. The guy's a talented performer, but I didn't think this was his best effort. Still, I wouldn't be disappointed if he won.

4. Donald Braswell - I gotta admit, I fast-forwarded through the second half of his song. (My son asked me if that was my "Piers Quickbuzz" imitation.) The guy has a great voice but just doesn't do it for me. Would be greatly disappointed if he won.

5. Queen Emily - A terrible effort. She wasn't anywhere near as good as the other four, and the lousy finish to her song just capped it off. Would boycott future AGT seasons if she won.

Entire season rankings of the final five:
1. Nuttin but Stringz
2. Eli Mattson
3. Neal E. Boyd
4. Queen Emily
5. Donald Braswell

7. "RE: Season 3 Top 5 -- Discuss"
1. NBS - most original talent and entertaining to boot.

2. Neal - pure angelic voice and tender-hearted, I almost cried when he sang...honest. And he's from my home state - an MU Tiger from Missouri!!

So I voted 5 for NBS and 5 for Neal. I liked them both and couldn't decide!

3. Eli - the songs are all starting to run together, he's certainly talented but I didn't see much range from him.

4. Donald - I'm glad he made it to the top 5, but that's as far as he should get. And he doesn't have much range either.

5. Emily - Good effort.

They pushed the Vegas Show thing way too much. Who cares. Find the best untapped talent in America. THAT'S your job.
