Looks like Season 8 might be the last one afterall.Executives at U.S. TV network Fox have decided to end their long-running hit 24 after the current series, according to a new report. Studio bosses are planning to axe the real time show, which stars Kiefer Sutherland as a federal agent, after eight seasons following a decrease in ratings and a spike in production costs. A final decision is expected to be made in the next week, reports Variety.com Link

It's now a week after the deadline, and no cancellation notice yet. Normally, that indicates discussions are continuing. There are two reasons that the show might be cancelled, and the drop in ratings (less than 10%) isn't one of them. One is that Kiefer Sutherland's contract expires after this season. Apparently there are negotiations to get him to return for either a TV show or a movie, but there is no agreement yet. The second is that showrunner Howard Gordon (the writer-producer who currently helms the show for FOX) is leaving that post after this season, because he has a new show called Patriots, based on an Israeli show, coming on in the fall. But he also says that 24 isn't dead yet, and it probably depends on cost and on script ideas if it survives: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/news/e3i56ed42b9a46f85544ac9c3e59e7d8f60?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+thr%2Fnews+%28The+Hollywood+Reporter+-+News%29 Speaking of "24," despite the continuous drumbeat about the veteran real-time terrorist drama coming to an end, Gordon was surprisingly optimistic about the show's chances to return for a ninth season. "Discussions are still being held; the book hasn't been closed," he said. "If there is '24' past Season 8," he added, "I will be part of that," though probably not as showrunner. He also said that star Kiefer Sutherland, who has no deal for the show beyond the current season, "is inclined to do another season if there is a good story." The show is now in production of the final two episodes of Season 8 and Gordon is bearing down. "Every year of '24' has a strong thematic closure," he said.

4. "No" |
It's the cost. FOX wanted a reduced per-episode price to pick it up. That would mean turning all the cast over again. No one wants to do that. This whole season has been about holding costs down compared to last year. But there's a limit.

It's a real shame the show ended... I'm a huge tv series fan. Without any doubt, Mash is the best show ever made. On the Mash dvds the scenario writing is incredible, and the plots are very relevant to any society. Showing the worst of man to the very best of man, this show very well described the human condition.Yet, even with the anti-war message, they refrain from bashing on soldiers (as most anti-war people tend to do) and they express pride in the bravery of them, while hating the need to fight. Entourage is absolutely hilarious. The thing that makes the dialogue so great on the Entourage dvds is that it is what a lot of people in the early 20's use. So many movies and TV shows lack what I call "everyday people language". Too many TV shows and Movies have stupid one liners and overall dialogue that just isn't what "real" people say. Its refreshing to watch a show that nails it perfectly. Commenting on DR NO from the James Bond dvds is a little like being asked to review 'Genesis" or "The Gospel According to Matthew." It IS what it is! Connery WAS Bond from the instant he appeared on screen and remember Ian Fleming, his creator was still alive at this stage. (Fleming in fact saw the first three Bonds but died before the release of THUNDERBALL)My all time favorite show is of course 24. It is an immensely innovative show, that has its primary hook in the fact that events occur in real time for a period of 24 hours (with each episode representing one hour), and in the constant suspense and twists it pours out of every subplot. The show on the 24 dvds is held together by the strength of Sutherland's performance – Bauer is a fascinating individual.
