1. "Second round after 2 games - Vancouver or Detroit?"
After two games in each series, Vancouver won one and lost one at home, and Detroit lost two on the road. So in which position would you rather be? Both teams just need to win out at home and steal one on the road to win the series, but it feels to me like Vancouver is in a better position.

Thoughts?

Both teams need to find some scoring or this won't matter.

Vancouver thought they were in a good (and similar) position in the last series, and almost lost the whole thing... so if I were them, I wouldn't count this as a done deal until the handshake lineup is forming after eliminating them...

Weird second round eh? The Wings have played well but San Jose has managed to win them all. I'm as surprised an anyone to see Detroit down three nothing. You know it could be '93 all over again and the Sharks are going to lose in the Conference final (Yogi will get that one ;)).

9. "RE: Second round after 2 games - Vancouver or Detroit?"
The high forward needs to pick the back door play (it's been there all series) up plus Erickson's got to make the hit in OT or play the puck, missing the hit left Thornton all day to pick up Setoguchi.

Jimmy's not the problem, he's playing just as good a Niemi for 1/2 the price but we need to play way better in our zone as we have all year long and stop giving up late leads. We use to never give up a late lead.

Luck and bounces are part of it but the better team makes their own luck sometimes.

I saw the end of Game 3 - poor guy was standing out there waiting for the faceoff with blood dripping off his nose. He had to stand away from the refs, who otherwise likely wouldn't have let him continue. Ovie's team is done for this year, but I'll bet in his heart he still hasn't given up.

Why does round 1 always have such close series (4 game 7s and only one sweep), while round 2 seems to be progressing to have only one close series?

Byoffer I'm so disappointed with this team,I'm sure Ovie wasn't the the only one with heart left at the end but there sure were a lot of casualties on the way. I expected more. Boudreau was a one trick pony in my mind, he motivated his team to play defense more responsibly buy he didn't have the tactical mind to deal with it defensively. He would need a good D assistant coach with a few arrows left in his quiver.

Talk about anti-climactic from the first round.

11. "RE: Things are looking up."
My guess is that the Sharks' trainers will have to reinforce the shafts of the teams' hockey sticks for tonight's game, as the players will all be squeezing them a little too tight. The pressure on the Sharks will be very high.

The commentators keep saying that only 3 teams have ever recovered from being down 0-3 in a series to win the series. I believe I heard that only 8 teams have ever come back to tie a series at 3-3 after being down 0-3. So if Detroit wins tonight, then winning game 7 is not as hard as winning games 4, 5, and 6. Even on the road the Wings have a pretty good chance tonight.

After one of the best 1st rounds that I can ever remember the second was kind of a dud. I applaud the Wings for not just rolling over when down 3-0 but injuries, give a ways and that dam back door play killed us.

15. "R.I.P. "Boogeyman" - Derek Boogaard"
One of the most feared enforcers has been found dead in his apartment at the too-young age of 28. story here

To the average person, he's "just another enforcer" but this situation bears watching because he just missed the last 50+ games of the season because of a concussion and that was his second major concussion. I'm sure he had a bunch of smaller ones accumulated over the years through all the fights he had. So, if it turns out that his death had any kind of an influence from the concussion symptoms, combined with Crosby's season-ending concussion and Savard's possible career-ending concussion, don't be surprised if there's a new (and loud) stink about the concussion problem in the NHL.

Quite possible this isn't related to his concussion as he has had a troubled time off the ice at times.

Bob Probert died last year with evidence of the accumulated effects of concussions. link

It's good to see sports paying more attention to concussions and their effects, with this year's 7-day DL in baseball the most recent addition.

18. "RE: R.I.P. "Boogeyman" - Derek Boogaard"
I think one big difference between Boogaard and Probert is that while Probert did have that diagnosis of C.T.E., he also had a well-documented history with drugs and alcohol which probably had a lot to do with the cause of death being heart failure. C.T.E. might lead to suicide or becoming a "vegetable" which in turn would lead to early death. Probert was still quite active up until his death.

In an effort to fight back, Tampa Bay's marketing staff had its fans make a lightning bolt outside their airplane to Boston.

http://yfrog.com/h32opxvj

According to the New York Times, the team handed out " gift bags, signed sticks and pucks and a chance to win two tickets to Game 6" to get fans to show up.

Why not just an extra serving of pudding before boarding the shuttle buses back to the old folks' homes? Or maybe a drawing for supplemental Medicare insurance? But they would have had twice the number of fans.

I understand that Tampa Bay wants to pack the house for the Game 6 against the Bruins. They'll have giveaways for new walkers between the periods. And they'll even pass out free coffee to anyone with an AARP card.

Reggie Dunlap on the Lightning: "I can't name names, but let's just say that there's a senior citizen's community in a southern state that's in the market for a hockey team.... Actually, it's Florida. See, they're gettin' a bunch of old geezers down there from the northeast. And what do you think those old geezers really miss in Florida? Hockey. Their own team. A Saturday-night game. Those poor old people down there, they gotta have something to root for.... They've already built the rink! They've dumped a lot of capital into this. What they're really lookin' for is a cheap deal on a team. And since we ain't exactly the Boston Bruins..."

Can't blame the refs for the Canucks-Sharks game - the Sharks kept shooting themselves in the foot with two too-many-men penalties and defencemen shooting pucks into the crowd instead of off the boards. When you insist on giving the other team plenty of powerplay opportunities because of undisciplined penalties like that, you deserve to be in a 3-1 hole in games.

While I'll agree SJ blew their opportunities in game 4 (5 straight pp's and then their cool leading to the 5 on 3's) out of those 5 pp's I think there was maybe 3 and 2 for Vancouver should have gotten.

But the diving call when the guy goes off the ice and does not return? Some of the other tick, tack calls. Yes, the playoffs always had a different rule book then the regular season but the rule book seems to be changing game to game right now thus why it's so hard to watch. There is no flow to the games at times because it's PP after PP, whistle after whistle.

*yawn*

Not because it is boring, but because the late games are killing me! I made it through the end of the first OT last night, but then packed it in. Canucks scored one of the craziest goals I have seen in the second OT to win the game and series. Amazing, only one player on the ice saw where the puck was, and luckily for Vancouver it was one of theirs.

Despite the 4-1 result in games, that seemed a good series with some very good skills on display. I am certainly cheering for Vancouver to finish was they did not 17 years ago.

Go 'Nucks!!

The last goal was good puck awareness. The real crazy goal for the Canucks was the second one, aka "bad refereeing = bad results."

Vancouver had no business even being in OT last night. And this isn't "make up for 1994" -- they can't be forgiven for allowing the unchecked ego known as Mike Kennan into the fraternity of Stanley Cup winners.

Well, it was a difficult thing to catch -- even now after viewing multiple angles, it's still not clear to me whether the clearing of the puck struck Sedin, so I wouldn't bet that the linesmen could catch it so quickly on the spot. The puck was already on the way upward (in terms of camera view) because it had hit the glass before heading toward Sedin, you can see it suddenly changes direction a split second earlier in the white space between the stanchion and Sedin.

It's a non-reviewable call anyway. The Sharks let Kesler stroll in untouched and be directly in front of Niemi on that tying goal, when they could have steered him out of the way. Douglas Murray didn't turn around and knock Kesler out of the way until after the tip-in had been made, so that was the bigger mistake than the controversy about whether it should have been an icing call or not.

Just to digress, I'm glad that the Atlanta Thrashers are looking to move to Winnipeg. An NHL without Winnipeg just seems inherently wrong.

If the move comes to pass, I presume the league will realign. Nashville is the logical choice to move into the Southeast in place of Atlanta; that won't change the fact that two Eastern Time Zone teams are in the West (Columbus and Detroit), but at least it should help Nashville develop some regional rivalries.

42. "RE: Winnipeg gets a team?"
Here is an intriguing idea for divisional realignment if/when the Atlanta-to-Winnipeg move takes place.

I like the idea of three conferences to more accurately split up the NHL, especially this bit:

In my proposal, the NHL would go from an 82 game schedule back to an 80 game schedule. Each team would play the other nine teams in its conference four times each (two games at home, two games on the road) for a total of 36 games. They would then play one additional game against the other four teams in their own division (alternating home games each year) for a total of four games. Then they would play each of the teams in the other conferences once at home and once away for a total of 40 more games. This gives you an even 80 games, 40 at home and 40 on the road, and something the NHL fails to have now: everyone playing everyone at least once home and away.

But I am not so sure about the playoff idea presented there. As long as the three conference winners get the automatic top three seeds throughout the playoffs, but we'd be more guaranteed the best matchup in the Finals instead of sometimes getting the best matchup in the conference finals and then having a heavily-favoured team matched up against a mediocre team. We could even have a Montreal-Boston finals for old-time's sake again!

Hey, Mickey, I kind of Likey (especially getting Pitt). Yes, the playoff picture would be a mess. Can you see an Boston vs. LA in the first round and play every other night? I know Detroit does it but the East Coast fans/teams would cry to high heaven.

To be honest, I figured that, after Nashville moved to the Eastern Conference in the Southeast, Minnesota would move to the Central, and Winnipeg would joint the Northwest. Then, the Central would look like the Big Ten, with Michigan, Ohio State, Northwestern and Minnesota (aka Detroit, Columbus, Chicago and Minnesota), with St. Louis thrown in because it borders Illinois. And the Northwest, like the Northeast, would be Canada-centric: Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton and Winnipeg, with Colorado being out of place.

Not calling any penalties certainly favored the Bruins who had so much trouble scoring with a man advantage. I still have a problem with the expression "letting them play". To me, that has always meant letting the poor players grab, interfere and hold the better, faster players.

Still, Boston played well and will be tough against Vancouver. The Sedins did nothing when they were opposed to top defensemen like the Hawks had so I expect that Charra and Seidenberg will bottle them up.

Great!

I just wish there was a team coming to Hamilton or the Waterloo region. Nothing against Winnipeg or Quebec City, but they both had a chance to have a NHL franchise and lost their teams, while there is a much larger population base to draw from in southwestern Ontario. To heck with the Maple Leafs' boo-hooing, this market is more than large enough to fully support two NHL franchises.

ETA: According to Bob McKenzie over on TSN, the Winnipeg team will play in the Southeast Division for one year before the league realigns for the 2012-13 season. Makes sense to me as it's kinda last minute and they've already started on the schedule for next year. Letting the Winnipeg team take over the already-set Thrashers schedule for next year is least problematic for the overall league schedule.

So... what will the new team's name be? I don't think they'll be keeping the Jets name since that was only 15 years ago and that team became the Coyotes in Phoenix. The Winnipeg Moose? The Manitoba True North?

They'll probably have a local poll for names. You know, involve the community, and thereby creating a buzz. But, really, it'll be to see whether Jets or Moose is more popular.

I don't know what they'll do for realignment. Detroit, Nashville, Chicago, St.Louis and Columbus are all pretty close together. so those five actually make sense together. You could move Minnesota into the division and push Nashville to the south east. Then, Winnipeg goes to the NW.

What would help is moving Phoenix to Seattle. Then, Colorado goes to the Pacfic and Seattle (or Portland) joins the NW which is far closer to the rest of the division than Denver is.

Detroit really, really wants to move into the East. So do Columbus and Nashville, but Detroit has more clout.

I expect that Detroit will prevail. And they'll want to be in with Toronto and Buffalo for the cross-Canada rivalries. That means that the East really will have to be realigned.

One possible reason for not announcing the name yet was perhaps that the league and Phoenix were in negotiations over the name because the league itself owns the Jets copyright and the old franchise was relocated to Phoenix.

Reminds me of the Baltimore Colts/Ravens situation, although the circumstances are different in that when the old Colts moved to Indianapolis and later the old Cleveland Browns relocated to Baltimore and was renamed the Ravens, the Colts name was already in use by Indianapolis. The situation is different also in that Cleveland was allowed to keep the old name and legacy of their franchise for when the NFL returned there.

The key part of the goal was Ryan Kesler somehow staying onside until the puck got in the Bruins zone. Really nice play on his part. I know there are a lot of national commentators who expect him to be the star of the series, and this was an auspicious start.

It took a while for them to show that he kept his skate down and did stay on side. Great play and great passing. I'm amazed that Thomas does not give up more goals like that since he plays so aggressively out in front of his net. He gets so far out there that instead of driving to the net, drive to the side and get behind him for the slam dunk goal.

The usual Bruins backline pairing this season was Chara and Boychuk. Then Boychuk made the error in game 1 that led to Kesler getting the puck into the Bruins end with no coverage with 20 seconds to play.

Going into game 2, Boychuk had been on the ice for all of the last 7 goals surrendered by the Bruins. As a result, Boychuk played much less in game 2, and Chara generally played with Seidenberg. But Chara was out there with Ference on the OT screwup in game 2.

I think the line jumble took its toll at the end.

Are we watching the same game? Other than the one hit that was late (and even pro-Bruin Don Cherry said that some of the responsibility for that is on Horton for watching his pass and not looking up) it would seem to me that the Bruins are the thugs. There sure are a lot of cross checks to the back of Sedin and Kessler that are not being called.

I wonder how different that second period might have been if that stick hadn't broken leading to the first goal. Then the flood gates opened and the Bruins poured through.

I hope that Nathan Horton will be okay.

Don Cherry would support bringing back Marty McSorley. But I think we've moved beyond that in terms of concussion research.

http://www.edmontonjournal.com/news/players+promote+education+into+concussions+hockey/4902645/story.html

I don't imagine losing a fifth defenseman for two games will hurt Vancouver nearly as much as losing Horton will hurt the Bruins. But that's even assuming that the NHL chooses to enforce its own rules and not to continue to make a mockery of them.

Rome got 4 games. That's fine as long as they make it a new standard. I don't think that hit was as mean as Chris Pronger's on Dean McAmmond in the 2007 Stanley Cup Finals (and Pronger had a rap sheet and had been suspended the series before!) or as bad as Chara's on Pacioretty (and that was in the regular season).

Seems to me like Rome made an effort to get in front of Horton so as to avoid a blindside hit so I don't think it's a rule 48. But Rome left his feet so he clearly intended to hit the upper part of the body.

While Chara didn't intend the odd angle of the hit, which made his hit on Pacioretty so much more severe, even Bruins fans were surprised he wasn't suspended for the hit itself, as shown in the attached Boston Globe column:

http://www.boston.com/sports/columnists/massarotti/2011/03/chara_hit_difficult_to_defend.html

Sometimes it feels like NHL penalties are allocated by lot. But they can't be. The game is too dangerous as it is without allowing players to hit other players in the head. It seems to me that we've had enough Mike Websters and Bob Proberts dying very young from post-concussion effects. These kinds of hits have to be eliminated.

Yeah I'm still amazed Chara wasn't suspended for that Pacioretty hit. That was bogus especially with the NHL claim that Chara has no prior history -- hello, every player has no prior history when they get suspended for the first time.

To be frank, Boston is one of the most hypocritical teams out there. They screeched long and loud over the Marc Savard hit from Matt Cooke, but the noise was rather quiet when their own players were doling out the concussion-making hits (see: Paille, Daniel). When Chara was being roasted for his hit, Bruins players such as Mark Recchi were accusing Pacioretty of embellishing it - they only need to look at Marc Savard to know how severe that kind of hit can be.

Now we have Claude Julien announcing publicly that his team would never stand for such behaviour as that displayed by Max Lapierre in shoving his glove's fingers into the mouth of a Boston player. So what happened? Yep, two of his own players (Recchi and Lucic) went on to do the exact same thing. Good that Julien dressed down his players for doing that ... but seriously, Boston players and coaches need to shut up.

I think the NFL refs have replaced the NHL refs.

I use to scream when the rules changed in the playoffs but at lease they stayed the same series to series and game to game. Now the player and fans have no idea what what is a penalty, what is a suspension and what's a good or bad play any more.

Homer gets his but in the crease it's interference but others run over the goalie and it's fine.

Thus why this last game was hard for me to watch. I just want a good game.

I don't know that I agree that Boston is "one of the most hypocritical teams out there", but there's no question that they were hypocrites in complaining so much about the apparently career-ending concussions to Savard but then defending Chara.

Paille got a four-game suspension, same as Rome -- and both were too lenient. But here's what the Bruins' Andrew Ference said about it, according to ESPN.com:

“It’s a bad hit, right? That’s what they’re trying to get rid of and you can’t be hypocritical about it when it happens to you and say it’s fine when your teammate does it.”

Ference said that, eh? The same Andrew Ference that hit Montreal's Halpern with a hit that was 'reviewed' by the league? A hit where Halpern lay dazed on the ice. The same Ference that made an obscene gesture to the Montreal fans?

I'm sure Ference is being sincere when he says that. He's said as much before but it looks like he needs to remove the plank in his own eye before he can remove a speck from his brother.

You must be kidding. The Ference "hit" on Halpern had as much in common with the Rome, Paille or Chara hits that we've been discussing as a gerbil does with a man-eating tiger. Have you even seen the replays? Ference barely moved during the entire sequence. In basketball, the call would have been a charging foul on Halpern.

And Ference's "bird" to the Montreal fans made sense to me after the fans had cheered just moments earlier when he was plastered by Brian Gionta; then he got up and immediately scored. Maybe I'd feel differently if he bit someone else's finger instead of showing his own.

Oh, it's clear that Ference stepped into Halpern at the last second -- it was a cheap shot, period. Halpern was fully expecting to be able to go around without being impended and if you look at the video in the link below and go to 0:44-0:46, it's clear that Ference braced his left leg, took his weight off his right leg and then lowered the boom with his shoulder into Halpern's face. Notice how Ference immediately started sprinting off after the hit.

Yes, Halpern shouldn't have let his guard down but it was a cheap shot. Just like Horton was stupid to let his guard down and he paid dearly for it with the hit from Rome (who was deservedly suspended).

video of hit - go to 0:44 for the best view.

Actually, I'll be completely honest. I didn't see the hit but I knew it was being discussed. Having seen it, it is closer to Pronger's hit on McAmmond from 2007 but not nearly as egregious.
I was merely commenting on the optics of a guy who had a hearing with the league concerning a questionable hit commenting on questionable hits.

Ryder's hit on Blair http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nxLs-g9lPEc however is germane as Ryder lined-up Blair who was nowhere near the puck and leveled him. Ryder even leaves his feet and it looks like shoulder to head. A classic pick play but should easily have been an interference penalty. In fact, Blair is lucky he landed forward and on his hands or the ice could have knocked him out, too.

Of course, the NHL always seems to factor the amount of injury into their decision of length of suspension even though a lot of it is luck. Had Horton's body not gone straight back and his shoulder hit the ice first, he probably isn't knocked out. In Blair's case, it's the reverse. Seems to me that these two should be treated similarly if they want to get rid of that kind of hit.

Agree... to me, the Ryder hit was far worse than the Rome hit - the Ryder hit was more of a blindside while the Rome hit was more straight on and was compounded by Horton admiring his beautiful pass.

I have no objections with the Rome suspension (other than I thought it should be more like 2 games) and the Ryder hit should have been flagged for a suspension. This just feeds the conspiracy theories that the Bruins get a little more favourable treatment because Colin Campbell's boy is on the team (even if it's Mike Murphy who doles out the punishment when it comes to the B's - he still works directly with Campbell).

It seems that Nathan Horton performed a miracle and came back to life in order to appear in the Boston locker room after last night's game to present the 'player of the game' jacket.

After all, since Mark Recchi said that Max Pacioretty must have been embellishing his injuries despite a fracture to the vertebrae and a severe concussion for an incident that didn't result in a suspension, you'd think that an incident worthy of a 4-game suspension in the Stanley Cup Finals would result in Horton being comatose and permanently disabled by comparison to Pacioretty.

How long before Recchi accuses Horton of embellishing his injury? Oh wait...he's on the same team so that's different!

I will admit that I am cheering for the Canucks, but I just can't see how Rome gets 4 games in the Stanley Cup finals, and Chara got zero games of any sort for his hit on Paciorrety.

I will also acknowledge that I am in favour of fixing the game to protect the players. I think there are a bunch of rules that need to be changed:
- put a standard set of cameras in every rink to watch the games. After each game have the NHL "police" review the footage and hand out penalties (fines are a start, but I would rather see suspensions) for "behind the play" slashes, cross-checks, etc. The stuff between Chara and Kessler last night was disrespectful of the game. (Note: the Australian Football League has a weekly tribunal to catch "behind the play" incidents, and it seems a smart way to help the referees)
- It seems to me that shoulder pads have become weapons to other players. Is there a way to soften shoulder pads while still protecting the players wearing them?

It seems to me that more and more players are intentionally putting themselves in danger. And this thing whereby a player uses his body to shield the puck against the boards parctically invites hits from behind, especially when they turn at the last second. There has to be some onus on the players to protect themselves. Then again, shot-blocking is a standard part of the game. While heroic, the player are still opening the door for injuries. Not sure how to get people to start protecting themselves better.

Rome was totally in front of Horton. The only reason it was a blindside was because Horton forgot to look where he was going. Horton was too busy admiring his pass, which we have seem many many times leads to getting hit.

As someone else stated in this thread, players have become very good at anticipating hits and protecting themselves. Horton forgot that the game was on, forgot to look where he was, and failed to protect himself.

After Game 2, I saw several columns written by Canadians that touted Roberto Luongo for the Conn Smythe (and one of them also trashed Tim Thomas). I doubt anyone's thinking that today.

Really, the Canucks have no choice. They have to start Luongo in Game 5 and hope for the best, despite what's happened in his last 4 periods and 4 minutes of hockey.

Agree, the Canucks are looking especially bad the past two games and unless there is a drastic change, the Cup is staying in the USA once again.

There's hope, though, as the Canucks went through a similar spell where Luongo and the Canucks turned in two terrible stinkers in a row after going up 3-0 against the Blackhawks, then they pulled together in time and won the series.

If the Sedin sisters don't snap out of it, the Canucks aren't going to win, period.

The Canucks played great in Game 5. They dominated the majority of the play and fully deserved to get the game's only goal.

The home crowd really fired the Canucks up. We'll see if it works for Boston in Game 6.

While walking in Boston about 4 PM, I saw someone wearing an autographed Cam Neely Bruins jersey, apparently headed for the game. Speaking just for myself, I couldn't imagine wearing an autographed jersey to a game -- but maybe the guy thought the jersey was good luck.

I saw lots of Bruins gear but almost no Canucks gear. There was one young woman wearing a Canucks sweater, walking with a guy not wearing any team colors (which probably meant that he was a Canucks fan as well), and I immediately thought about going back to my car to get my baseball bat.

But then I remembered that I don't live in L.A. any longer.

Instead, I just gave them directions when they asked.

Here's hoping for a fun, clean game tonight. And a Bruins victory, if that wouldn't be too much to ask.

And it didn't help that almost immediately after that Raymond hit, Henrietta Sedin let the puck skip between his legs with a wide-open net on almost exactly the same play as the Max Lapierre goal in Game 5.

The Bruins actually got a waiver from NBC to permit them to show Game 7 in the Boston Garden tonight. But then the city of Boston refused permission for it unless the team agreed that fans would be limited to one beer.

Frankly, I think the LOSING team's fans will be more likely to cause trouble. So I guess that tells you how Boston's Mayor Menino envisions the outcome tonight.

Yep, AyaK hit the nail on the head on that one but then again Canucks fans that were leaving were just zombies and could not believe they lost after being up 2-0 and 3-2.

Those "fans" who rioted where mostly there for the party and when the party was soured it turned ugly quick.

Canucks are going to need a goalie for next year, there is almost no way Lou can come back let alone if he made it out of town last night.

LAST EDITED ON 06-16-11 AT 01:50 AM (EST)

In the end, that was the goal differential between Boston and Vancouver in the Stanley Cup.

I had been worried that this series might end up like the 1960 World Series. Scores:
Game 1: PIT (6-4), Game 2: NYY (16-3), Game 3: NYY (10-0) , Game 4: PIT (3-2), Game 5: PIT (5-2), Game 6: NYY (12-0), Game 7: PIT (10-9). The Yankees had three absolute blowout wins but lost the Series. I thought the Canucks might be able to duplicate that. But Tim Thomas made sure they didn't.

With the Blackhawks and the Bruins winning in back-to-back years, this reminds me strongly of when the Red Sox and White Sox won back-to-back World Series in 2004 and 2005 to end huge droughts.

128. "I knew it..."
For me, the series was over for Vancouver when Henrietta Sedin got punched six times in the face by Brad Marchand in the third period of Game 6 ... and there was no penalty. Even more telling was that nobody rushed to Henrietta's defence.

To me, that is incomprehensible. You stick up for your team captain, period, and you knock Marchand down to let him know that Sedin is hands off or at the very least show the Bruins that they're not going to get away with pushing the Canucks around.

That's a clear signal that Henrietta doesn't have the respect of his teammates and there was no heart and desire in the team, so it was easy to predict what would happen in Game 7. The Canucks, as a roster, is pretty much set (other than at goaltender as Luongo needs a heart transplant) but they need to demote Sedin and install a fire-breather as captain.

I guarantee you that if Mark Messier was still in town, Marchand would have been knocked ten feet back after the first two or three punches, then the Canucks would have won last night after he railed at his teammates to step it up.

That was the story line here too, although I didn't want to discuss it because I didn't want to jinx the Bruins. The fact that none of the Canucks came to Sedin's defense (it was Daniel, not Henrik, wasn't it?) against Marchand -- and Sedin didn't show any defense of his own -- reminded everyone in Boston of when Matt Cooke clobbered Marc Savard last year and none of the Bruins responded.

Really, the Cooke hit was the difference between last year's Bruins team and this year's. In this series, I thought the Bruins had bought in to all of the hype about needing to avoid penalties because of the Canucks' power play being so potent. Then Aaron Rome blasted Nathan Horton on the same kind of play in Game 3. The Bruins still didn't seem to put up much fight, and Vancouver successfully killed a five-minute penalty.

But then came the intermission between the first and second period. We may never know exactly what happened in the B's locker room then. We've heard that both Zdeno Chara and Shawn Thornton talked about Savard and Horton, as if this was the B's chance to make up for having rolled over against Pittsburgh in 2010 after the Saverd hit. We don't really know what was said, though. But the B's came out like a different team -- Ference promptly scored (in 11 seconds!) and the B's didn't let up for two games, then they did it again in games 6 and 7.

Frankly, all Vancouver needs to do to see why they lost the Cup is watch Marchand use Daniel Sedin's face as a speed bag without the Canucks responding to it in any way, let alone the same way that the B's responded to Rome's hit on Horton. Maybe the Sedins will learn from it.

Yeah, you're correct, it was Danielle not Henrietta - don't know why I had it in my mind that it was the captain.

It still doesn't look good in any way at all to let your team's current Art Ross trophy winner get swatted around like a punching bag and not have anyone step in on her behalf, but it's certainly not on the same level as it would have been if it was actually Henrik in there.

I had heard some scuttlebutt as well that the players asked Julien to step out during that intermission and Chara/Thornton laid it out to the rest of the team -- I certainly believe that and it was likely the difference in the series. It was easy to see which team had the leaders and which team didn't have theirs step up.

I still believe that Henrik is the wrong guy to lead that team, just like Luongo was the wrong guy to be captain the previous two years. Time to find somebody else to lead, and the Canucks will be a favourite to get back to the Finals again next year.

I'm glad you put fans in quotes. Those were not fans, but rather hoodlums looking for an excuse.

I was in Vancouver in 94. Watched game 7 downtown at a friend's place, and walked right up Robson St after the Cup had sadly been given to the Rangers. Initially there was no riot. There was actually a celebration. A guy on roller skates (not blades) went by me playing a trombone. People were sad, but it had been a magical run.

But as I boarded the bus to head home, I couldn't help noticing all the vehicles and people pouring into downtown. It felt like they were coming downtown to cause trouble, and that is exactly what happened.

At lunch that day there were two other signals of trouble. The liquor store close to my office downtown had a line-up to get in that went out the door and down the street. I've never seen that before. And while sitting in a window seat in a restaurant at lunch that day I say a guy walk by carrying a gas mask. There were signals that there would be trouble, and the hooligans delivered.

I am very sad that it happened again. I hope that laws are changed to make rioters/looter really pay for what they have done. Having lived through that in Toronto this year with the G20 riots something needs to be done.

Oh, and the hockey game? Verry disappointing.

I felt it was the most pre-planned spontaneous riot on the local sports record. 'If we win, we're going to be so happy that we'll riot. And if we lose, we're going to be so upset that we'll riot. Either way, win-win!' They not only came down looking for trouble, they likely planned out their store assaults as if it was Black Friday.

No mercy due.

These riots really reminded me more of the anti-WTO riots in Seattle in 1999 than of the 1994 Vancouver Stanley Cup riots. They seemed much more anarchistic, for one thing. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a substantial overlap of rioters between the two events.

138. "Philly on the rampage..."
Huge series of moves by the Flyers today, making two major trades and possibly solving an eternal headache for their franchise dating back to the days of Ron Hextall:

First, Philly traded Jeff Carter to Columbus for Jakub Voracek, the 8th pick in the upcoming draft and a third-rounder.

My verdict: Both teams gain in that Philly moves salary and get a few young players (Voracek will be an useful second or third liner) to restock with for years to come, while the Blue Jackets finally get some real talent to play with Rick Nash on what should now be an explosive first line.

Next, Philly traded Mike Richards to Los Angeles for Brayden Schenn, Wayne Simmonds and a second-rounder.

Verdict: I think Philly wins this trade, although L.A. will definitely gain from a little boost of leadership from Richards as it was one component that was rather lacking on that young team last year. Schenn is supposed to be really, really good, while Simmonds could become a fan fave with his rugged two-way play.

Finally, Philly signed Ilya Bryzgalov to a 9 year, $51 million contract.

Verdict: Will he finally solve their goaltending issues? Hard to say. He's good, can be really really good at times, but he can also disappear from time to time. He went *poof* in the playoffs this past season, so I'm gonna say the Flyers goaltending issues will remain a hot point of discussion for years to come at the first sign of a poor performance in the playoffs.

139. "The Canadians sign Andrei Markov for 3 years "
@$5.75M a year and he's played 52 games in the last two years but before that he played 93% of the time.

Big risk/reward signing. He's a great D when healthy but last two years have not stayed on the ice.

So, do they start over with the franchise's records, or do they take over those held by the former Winnipeg Jets (current Phoenix Coyotes)?

I wish I knew. There would be a certain justice in passing the history back over... but we'll have to wait for that part of the official announcement. (The name is a leak.)

That would make sense. I'm trying to remember what happened with the historical records of the Cleveland Browns/Baltimore Ravens/Indianapolis Colts.

I think Indy kept their records in the move from Baltimore to Indy, but because after the first Browns became the Ravens that Cleveland was promised the next expansion team, I think those records stayed in Cleveland and when the Ravens hit the field for the first time in Baltimore, their slate was clean...

*points up at post 68 above*

Yeah, the Browns were "deactivated" for a few years and were allowed to keep their team name, colours, records and franchise archives as part of the deal to pacify them after the team went to Baltimore to become the Ravens, then the new team was reincarnated as the Cleveland Browns.

Indy did keep their records in moving from Baltimore because they moved their entire franchise.

With the Winnipeg team, it's an unique situation because all of their franchise records are now in Phoenix while all of Atlanta's franchise records are now in Winnipeg. Truthfully, I'm surprised that the Jets were allowed to use that name again (but then again, think of the old Ottawa Senators which was relocated to an U.S. city in the '30s, then the new Senators came as an expansion team in '92 as a separate franchise).
