Vancouver thought they were in a good (and similar) position in the last series, and almost lost the whole thing... so if I were them, I wouldn't count this as a done deal until the handshake lineup is forming after eliminating them...

Weird second round eh? The Wings have played well but San Jose has managed to win them all. I'm as surprised an anyone to see Detroit down three nothing. You know it could be '93 all over again and the Sharks are going to lose in the Conference final (Yogi will get that one ;)).

LAST EDITED ON 05-05-11 AT 11:39 AM (EST)Byoffer I'm so disappointed with this team,I'm sure Ovie wasn't the the only one with heart left at the end but there sure were a lot of casualties on the way. I expected more. Boudreau was a one trick pony in my mind, he motivated his team to play defense more responsibly buy he didn't have the tactical mind to deal with it defensively. He would need a good D assistant coach with a few arrows left in his quiver. Talk about anti-climactic from the first round. Just remembering a special timeedited b/c it needed to be edited

I think one big difference between Boogaard and Probert is that while Probert did have that diagnosis of C.T.E., he also had a well-documented history with drugs and alcohol which probably had a lot to do with the cause of death being heart failure. C.T.E. might lead to suicide or becoming a "vegetable" which in turn would lead to early death. Probert was still quite active up until his death.

Can't blame the refs for the Canucks-Sharks game - the Sharks kept shooting themselves in the foot with two too-many-men penalties and defencemen shooting pucks into the crowd instead of off the boards. When you insist on giving the other team plenty of powerplay opportunities because of undisciplined penalties like that, you deserve to be in a 3-1 hole in games.

*yawn*Not because it is boring, but because the late games are killing me! I made it through the end of the first OT last night, but then packed it in. Canucks scored one of the craziest goals I have seen in the second OT to win the game and series. Amazing, only one player on the ice saw where the puck was, and luckily for Vancouver it was one of theirs. Despite the 4-1 result in games, that seemed a good series with some very good skills on display. I am certainly cheering for Vancouver to finish was they did not 17 years ago. Go 'Nucks!!

To be honest, I figured that, after Nashville moved to the Eastern Conference in the Southeast, Minnesota would move to the Central, and Winnipeg would joint the Northwest. Then, the Central would look like the Big Ten, with Michigan, Ohio State, Northwestern and Minnesota (aka Detroit, Columbus, Chicago and Minnesota), with St. Louis thrown in because it borders Illinois. And the Northwest, like the Northeast, would be Canada-centric: Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton and Winnipeg, with Colorado being out of place.

LAST EDITED ON 05-31-11 AT 12:03 PM (EST)Great! I just wish there was a team coming to Hamilton or the Waterloo region. Nothing against Winnipeg or Quebec City, but they both had a chance to have a NHL franchise and lost their teams, while there is a much larger population base to draw from in southwestern Ontario. To heck with the Maple Leafs' boo-hooing, this market is more than large enough to fully support two NHL franchises. ETA: According to Bob McKenzie over on TSN, the Winnipeg team will play in the Southeast Division for one year before the league realigns for the 2012-13 season. Makes sense to me as it's kinda last minute and they've already started on the schedule for next year. Letting the Winnipeg team take over the already-set Thrashers schedule for next year is least problematic for the overall league schedule. So... what will the new team's name be? I don't think they'll be keeping the Jets name since that was only 15 years ago and that team became the Coyotes in Phoenix. The Winnipeg Moose? The Manitoba True North?

They'll probably have a local poll for names. You know, involve the community, and thereby creating a buzz. But, really, it'll be to see whether Jets or Moose is more popular.I don't know what they'll do for realignment. Detroit, Nashville, Chicago, St.Louis and Columbus are all pretty close together. so those five actually make sense together. You could move Minnesota into the division and push Nashville to the south east. Then, Winnipeg goes to the NW. What would help is moving Phoenix to Seattle. Then, Colorado goes to the Pacfic and Seattle (or Portland) joins the NW which is far closer to the rest of the division than Denver is.

The key part of the goal was Ryan Kesler somehow staying onside until the puck got in the Bruins zone. Really nice play on his part. I know there are a lot of national commentators who expect him to be the star of the series, and this was an auspicious start.

I will admit that I am cheering for the Canucks, but I just can't see how Rome gets 4 games in the Stanley Cup finals, and Chara got zero games of any sort for his hit on Paciorrety.I will also acknowledge that I am in favour of fixing the game to protect the players. I think there are a bunch of rules that need to be changed: - put a standard set of cameras in every rink to watch the games. After each game have the NHL "police" review the footage and hand out penalties (fines are a start, but I would rather see suspensions) for "behind the play" slashes, cross-checks, etc. The stuff between Chara and Kessler last night was disrespectful of the game. (Note: the Australian Football League has a weekly tribunal to catch "behind the play" incidents, and it seems a smart way to help the referees) - It seems to me that shoulder pads have become weapons to other players. Is there a way to soften shoulder pads while still protecting the players wearing them? It seems to me that more and more players are intentionally putting themselves in danger. And this thing whereby a player uses his body to shield the puck against the boards parctically invites hits from behind, especially when they turn at the last second. There has to be some onus on the players to protect themselves. Then again, shot-blocking is a standard part of the game. While heroic, the player are still opening the door for injuries. Not sure how to get people to start protecting themselves better.

Seems to me like Rome made an effort to get in front of HortonRome was totally in front of Horton. The only reason it was a blindside was because Horton forgot to look where he was going. Horton was too busy admiring his pass, which we have seem many many times leads to getting hit. As someone else stated in this thread, players have become very good at anticipating hits and protecting themselves. Horton forgot that the game was on, forgot to look where he was, and failed to protect himself.

LAST EDITED ON 06-16-11 AT 01:50 AM (EST)In the end, that was the goal differential between Boston and Vancouver in the Stanley Cup. I had been worried that this series might end up like the 1960 World Series. Scores: Game 1: PIT (6-4), Game 2: NYY (16-3), Game 3: NYY (10-0) , Game 4: PIT (3-2), Game 5: PIT (5-2), Game 6: NYY (12-0), Game 7: PIT (10-9). The Yankees had three absolute blowout wins but lost the Series. I thought the Canucks might be able to duplicate that. But Tim Thomas made sure they didn't. With the Blackhawks and the Bruins winning in back-to-back years, this reminds me strongly of when the Red Sox and White Sox won back-to-back World Series in 2004 and 2005 to end huge droughts.

For me, the series was over for Vancouver when Henrietta Sedin got punched six times in the face by Brad Marchand in the third period of Game 6 ... and there was no penalty. Even more telling was that nobody rushed to Henrietta's defence. To me, that is incomprehensible. You stick up for your team captain, period, and you knock Marchand down to let him know that Sedin is hands off or at the very least show the Bruins that they're not going to get away with pushing the Canucks around. That's a clear signal that Henrietta doesn't have the respect of his teammates and there was no heart and desire in the team, so it was easy to predict what would happen in Game 7. The Canucks, as a roster, is pretty much set (other than at goaltender as Luongo needs a heart transplant) but they need to demote Sedin and install a fire-breather as captain. I guarantee you that if Mark Messier was still in town, Marchand would have been knocked ten feet back after the first two or three punches, then the Canucks would have won last night after he railed at his teammates to step it up.

132. "RE: I knew it..." |
That was the story line here too, although I didn't want to discuss it because I didn't want to jinx the Bruins. The fact that none of the Canucks came to Sedin's defense (it was Daniel, not Henrik, wasn't it?) against Marchand -- and Sedin didn't show any defense of his own -- reminded everyone in Boston of when Matt Cooke clobbered Marc Savard last year and none of the Bruins responded. Really, the Cooke hit was the difference between last year's Bruins team and this year's. In this series, I thought the Bruins had bought in to all of the hype about needing to avoid penalties because of the Canucks' power play being so potent. Then Aaron Rome blasted Nathan Horton on the same kind of play in Game 3. The Bruins still didn't seem to put up much fight, and Vancouver successfully killed a five-minute penalty. But then came the intermission between the first and second period. We may never know exactly what happened in the B's locker room then. We've heard that both Zdeno Chara and Shawn Thornton talked about Savard and Horton, as if this was the B's chance to make up for having rolled over against Pittsburgh in 2010 after the Saverd hit. We don't really know what was said, though. But the B's came out like a different team -- Ference promptly scored (in 11 seconds!) and the B's didn't let up for two games, then they did it again in games 6 and 7. Frankly, all Vancouver needs to do to see why they lost the Cup is watch Marchand use Daniel Sedin's face as a speed bag without the Canucks responding to it in any way, let alone the same way that the B's responded to Rome's hit on Horton. Maybe the Sedins will learn from it.

127. "RE: Congratulations Bruins Fans" |
I'm glad you put fans in quotes. Those were not fans, but rather hoodlums looking for an excuse.I was in Vancouver in 94. Watched game 7 downtown at a friend's place, and walked right up Robson St after the Cup had sadly been given to the Rangers. Initially there was no riot. There was actually a celebration. A guy on roller skates (not blades) went by me playing a trombone. People were sad, but it had been a magical run. But as I boarded the bus to head home, I couldn't help noticing all the vehicles and people pouring into downtown. It felt like they were coming downtown to cause trouble, and that is exactly what happened. At lunch that day there were two other signals of trouble. The liquor store close to my office downtown had a line-up to get in that went out the door and down the street. I've never seen that before. And while sitting in a window seat in a restaurant at lunch that day I say a guy walk by carrying a gas mask. There were signals that there would be trouble, and the hooligans delivered. I am very sad that it happened again. I hope that laws are changed to make rioters/looter really pay for what they have done. Having lived through that in Toronto this year with the G20 riots something needs to be done. Oh, and the hockey game? Verry disappointing.

She's actually a resident of Vancouver - she grew up a stone's throw from where I am in southwestern Ontario.

138. "Philly on the rampage..." |
Huge series of moves by the Flyers today, making two major trades and possibly solving an eternal headache for their franchise dating back to the days of Ron Hextall:First, Philly traded Jeff Carter to Columbus for Jakub Voracek, the 8th pick in the upcoming draft and a third-rounder. My verdict: Both teams gain in that Philly moves salary and get a few young players (Voracek will be an useful second or third liner) to restock with for years to come, while the Blue Jackets finally get some real talent to play with Rick Nash on what should now be an explosive first line. Next, Philly traded Mike Richards to Los Angeles for Brayden Schenn, Wayne Simmonds and a second-rounder. Verdict: I think Philly wins this trade, although L.A. will definitely gain from a little boost of leadership from Richards as it was one component that was rather lacking on that young team last year. Schenn is supposed to be really, really good, while Simmonds could become a fan fave with his rugged two-way play. Finally, Philly signed Ilya Bryzgalov to a 9 year, $51 million contract. Verdict: Will he finally solve their goaltending issues? Hard to say. He's good, can be really really good at times, but he can also disappear from time to time. He went *poof* in the playoffs this past season, so I'm gonna say the Flyers goaltending issues will remain a hot point of discussion for years to come at the first sign of a poor performance in the playoffs.

So, do they start over with the franchise's records, or do they take over those held by the former Winnipeg Jets (current Phoenix Coyotes)?

I wish I knew. There would be a certain justice in passing the history back over... but we'll have to wait for that part of the official announcement. (The name is a leak.)

That would make sense. I'm trying to remember what happened with the historical records of the Cleveland Browns/Baltimore Ravens/Indianapolis Colts.

I think Indy kept their records in the move from Baltimore to Indy, but because after the first Browns became the Ravens that Cleveland was promised the next expansion team, I think those records stayed in Cleveland and when the Ravens hit the field for the first time in Baltimore, their slate was clean...
