2. "2011 NHL Playoff Pick'em" |
I was just coming by to start a thread if no one else had.Instructions from last year's thread (with some modifications): Pick the winning team from each series right up to the conference and Stanley Cup finals. Here's a fictitious example, 1. Washington Capitals 2. New Jersey Devils 3. Buffalo Sabres 4. Pittsburgh Penguins 5. Ottawa Senators 6. Montreal Canadiens 7. Philadelphia Flyers 8. Boston Bruins **official standings are available here The 1st seed plays the 8th seed, the 2nd seed plays the 7th seed and so on - example picks as follows. Series 1 Washington(1)/Boston(8) - Boston wins Series 2 New Jersey(2)/Philadelphia(7) - New Jersey wins Series 3 Buffalo(3)/Montreal(6) - Montreal wins Series 4 Pittsburgh(4)/ Ottawa(5) - Ottawa wins :. Should all my picks come in, I collect 4 points and my winning teams move on to the second round where I have picked teams all the way through to the Stanley Cup Final. :. Correct picks in the first round are worth 1 point, 2 in the second, 3 in the third and 5 for the final. :. Pick a series in the correct number of games ie. Montreal over Buffalo in six games. So along with naming your series winner, tell me in how many games the series will end. One half point (0.5) will awarded for each correct answer. :. Lastly in the unlikely event that we end up tied, a tie-breaking question for your viewing pleasure. Tell me how many goals will be scored in the Stanley Cup deciding game. Closest to the answer without going over. :. Your picks must be submitted by reply to this thresd before the playoffs begin. Done by a Cap

3. "My picks" |
LAST EDITED ON 04-12-11 AT 03:53 PM (EST)Western Conference Quarterfinals: 1. Vancouver v. 8. Chicago Vancouver in 6. Chicago is out of gas. 2. San Jose v. 7. L.A. San Jose in 5. L.A. doesn't have the firepower left b/c of injuries. 3. Detroit v. 6. Phoenix Phoenix in 7. Detroit doesn't have the goal-tending. 4. Anaheim v. 5. Nashville Nashville in 6. Anaheim's top line can't beat the gritty and balanced Preds. Eastern Conference Quarterfinals:
1. Washington v. 8. New York Rangers Washington in 6. I would take them in 5, but I don't have much confidence in the Caps. 2. Philadelphia v. 7. Buffalo Philly in 7. I don't think Philly has the goal-tending either, but I'm not sure if Miller is 100%. 3. Boston v. 6. Montreal Boston in 6. Price is good, but the Bs have too much firepower + Chara. 4. Pittsburgh v. Tampa Bay Tampa Bay in 7. I still can't believe that the Pens did so well with Sid the Kid. Still, TB has something going this year. Western Semifinals: 1. Vancouver v. 6. Phoenix Vancouver in 5. Phoenix will be over-matched and tired after beating Detroit. 2. San Jose v. 5. Nashville Nashville in 7. The Preds finally throw off the SJ monkey; Thornton gets run out of town. Eastern Semifinals: 1. Washington v. 5. Tampa Bay Tampa Bay in 7. Ovie & Co. disappoint once again. 2. Philadelphia v. 3. Boston Boston in 6. No repeat of last year's disaster. Bruins TCB. Western Finals: 1. Vancouver v. 5. Nashville Vancouver in 6. I would love to see Nashville win, but Vancouver has a lot of pieces that the Preds don't have to win a 7-game series. I predicted this Western Finals match-up last year, too, so don't bet any money on my picks. Eastern Finals: 3. Boston v. 5. Tampa Bay. Boston in 6. Bruins FINALLY get back to SC Finals. Stanley Cup Finals: Boston in 7 (total goals=7). I think (hope, PRAY) this is the Bruins year. Done by a Cap

5. "RE: 2011 NHL Playoff Pick'em" |
Let's see if I can make it three times.EAST FIRST ROUND 1) Washington vs. 8) New York - I just don't know if I trust the Capitals in the playoffs yet. Then again, I don't know if the Rangers are this year's Canadiens. Caps in five 2) Philadelphia vs. 7) Buffalo - Last year's Flyers caught fire in the playoffs. They're also SI's pick. Flyers in five 3) Boston vs. 6) Montreal - Rule no. 1: Never trust the Bruins as a high seed against Montreal, when the Canadiens have their number this year. Habs in six 4) Pittsburgh vs. 5) Tampa Bay - So the Southeast got another one in. And Sid the Kid's still out. And yet, the Pens are fine. Pens in six WEST FIRST ROUND 1) Vancouver vs. 8) Chicago - The defending champs? More like chumps backing into the playoffs. Canucks in a sweep 2) San Jose vs. 7) Los Angeles - The least playoff-equipped good team ever vs. a team that could surprise people. Kings in six 3) Detroit vs. 6) Phoenix - Are these the Red Wings circa 2009 or the Red Wings circa 2010? Doesn't matter; even the subpar Red Wings beat Phoenix. Wings in six 4) Anaheim vs. 5) Nashville - The Ducks scare me. And the Predators never win a playoff series. Ducks in five EAST SEMIFINALS 1) Washington vs. 6) Montreal - Last year's surprise team against last year's first-round disaster. Revenge is sweet. Caps in seven 2) Philadelphia vs. 4) Pittsburgh - This one could go either way. I'll take playoff experience, especially if Sid's back. Pens in six WEST SEMIFINALS 1) Vancouver vs. 7) Los Angeles - The Kings' luck runs out. Canucks in five 3) Detroit vs. 4) Anaheim - This series makes my head hurt. Wings in seven EAST FINAL 1) Washington vs. 4) Pittsburgh - Do I trust the Caps? Do I trust the Caps? Hmm...if I have to ask again...no. Pens in seven WEST FINAL 1) Vancouver vs. 3) Detroit - Shaky goaltending and good offense vs. shaky goaltending and good offense. I have to go with the rested team...nah, can't do it. Wings in six STANLEY CUP FINAL Pittsburgh vs. Detroit - It worked in 2009. Wings in seven, final score 3-2

I agree with the Capn. It's nice to see as much variety in the picks as possible. It will also give us some indication on whether knowing the result of the first games of the series' helps at all.

11. "RE: NHL Playoff Pick'em?" |
First roundEastern Conference: Washington over New York over in 6 - I don't think Washington has got the Def for the playoffs but Lundqvist steals 2 games but missing Callahan is too much. Buffalo over Philadelphia in 6 - I keep hoping the Miller finally does something and I hate Pronger so this is base on feelings. Boston over Montreal in 7 - Another gut pick. Thomas is back. Tampa Bay over Pittsburgh in 6 - Yes, Pitts been doing it for most of the year without Crosby and Malkin but this is the playoffs. Western Conference Vancouver over Chicago in 6 - Vancouver finally gets by Chicago in Chicago. Crawford is no Niemi but Chicago put up a fight but their lack of depth (most due to salary cap moves) with come back to bit them in the butt. San Jose over LA in 5 - LA is missing their top two scores and Quick can't do it all. Detroit over Phoenix in 7 - Howard is not the issue...Def and turnovers in their own end leaving Howard out to dry is. Babcock will get them right more games than not and Phoenix will fight like they did last year. Anaheim over Nashville in 7 - Two every hot teams but Nashville let me down last year plus the Perry line is too much for even their good team Def. Second round Eastern Conference Buffalo over Washington in 6 Boston over Tampa Bay in 7 Western Conference Vancouver over Anaheim in 6 San Jose over Detroit in 7 Conference Finals Boston over Buffalo in 6 Vancouver over San Jose in 7 Stanley Cup Finals Boston over Vancouver in 7 Final game has 7 goals. Agreed completely - especially since the Wings bumped off Phoenix with relatively little effort, and all the other teams are killing each other while the Wings sit back, laugh, rest, and get healthy.

23. "1st Rd. Standings" |
No fancy-schmansy tables from me--just the facts. Here's what I have as the standings. My understanding is that one only gets credit for a series ending in the correct # of games if one picks the correct winner. If I'm wrong, someone will correct me, I'm sure. With so much on the line (bragging rights, an imaginary toque, poutine), please double-check your scores. 1. Cappy: 9 2. mrc: 8.5 3. Deb: 7 4. Yogi: 6.5 4. Hobbs: 6.5 6. Stan: 5.5 *7. Pepe: 5 8. Col. Z.: 4.5 *Not eligible for the grand prizes due to late entry. Done by a Cap

LAST EDITED ON 06-03-11 AT 10:53 PM (EST)Hmm. Hobbs and I both have a Bos-Van SC Finals with Boston winning in 7 games with a 7-goal total. We're smart peeps! Actually, 5 of the 8 players chose either Vancouver or Boston as SC winner--pretty decent picking. Name (SC pick) 1. mrc: 20.5 (Boston) 2. Hobbs: 19 (Boston) 3. Cappy: 18.5 (Vancouver) 4. Deb: 16 (San Jose) 5. Yogi: 13.5 (Boston) 6. Stan: 13 (Vancouver) 7. Pepe: 7 (Philadelphia San Jose) 8. Zoidberg: 6.5 (Detroit) If Boston wins, then I win first place. (Sorry, Hobbs.) If Vancouver wins, then Cappy takes the gold. Everyone else . . . well, thanks for playing. Done by a Cap

Not that it makes one bit of a difference considering how far down I am in the rankings ... but HEY! I would die before I'd ever consider picking the Flyers to win the Cup. That's how much I despise them. (Picked the Sharks to win, actually. )
