"The NFL labor talks."
Two things to remember:

1. No business is too big to fail.

2. The government will not bail this group out.

I don't think the league is heading for a total self-destruct, but I do feel both sides are entrenched to the point where everyone is willing to throw away a few games just to show how serious they are. My prediction is a lot of smoke, a ton of shouting, some actual flames, and everyone gets a deal done -- but not before turning next year into a fourteen-game season. I'm pretty sure the owners won't try walk-on players this time.

...okay, Davis and Snyder will. But other than that...

I wonder how much Snyder's subs will be ordered to pay him?

What Max said.

As most of you may know, I am a very active Union member. But the notion of "labor" being a select group of multimillionaires, most of whom live extravagant lifestyles burning through cash like nobody's business, makes me want to wretch. (Crikey, even the minimum NFL salary would do just fine for 99 9/10 of the real members of the labor force.)

Talented as they are, thinking of these primadonnas as being the victims of abusive labor practices just reeks.

3. "1982"
In 1982, the NFL played a nine-game season after a 57-day long strike knocked out seven games per team. I remember that season because the Browns and Lions both made the playoffs with a losing record, which no one had ever done before or since until Seattle did it this year.

I've often "joked" that the reason that neither the Browns or Lions have ever made the Super Bowl is that the football gods were so offended by them making the playoffs with a sub-.500 record. We'll see if that jinx now hits the Seahawks as well.

Primadonnas, yes, but let's not forget that the average career lasts 4 years and many come out of it broken for life. The owners wanting more is disgusting. Their stance on rookies is viable, the rest garbage.

I agree except in one regard - the league makes enough damn money to upgrade the equipment so concussions and things go down, and the players can get their injuries taken care of for a long damn time after they retire.

Beyond that? Shut up and play the damn game.

Up to $60,000 per qualified participant (in six installments) over the course of the lockout. Which basically means you can send your entourage out for beer twice.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=6270467

As a grand total sum of money, it's an impressive amount -- but compared to what the owners are falling back on, it's throw pillow versus firefighter's air cushion. And the fact that they started offering money this early has to make the owners happy. We've seen the post-career bankruptcy figures, know some players live check to check, and that entourage can drink anyone under the table -- but to have people asking for cash this early in the process? I suspect we have funds-poor players out there, and I don't know how long they're going to last before they break.

Not everyone can go apply for a job in the MLS, y'know.

25. "After four months."
Players: 'All we're asking is that the league obey the law.'

Owners: 'Screw that! We're rich!'

We can now start counting down to lost time. Rookie minicamps and briefings are pretty much gone. The 'optional' training camps go next, and then the mandatory attendance ones. Shortly after that, we lose preseason games, and then...

Y'know the real potential winner here? Hockey. With the NBA scheduled to go lockout as soon as the Finals or draft wrap up (pick your favorite), a worst-case scenario for the two battling leagues leaves puck slapping as the last major winter sport. Guess who's getting the headlines? The ticket sales from a sports-desperate public? Possibly even a better TV contract? (Okay, that last may be pipe dreaming.)

I wonder if any of the players are thinking Federal League?

26. "RE: After four months."
I've mostly stayed out of this thread, because I don't really side with either the players or the owners here.

The players got lucky when they got a judge previously (David Doty, pronounced "dotty") who believed in form over substance. The players' union claimed to decertify, even though it was still functioning as the players' exclusive bargaining unit, and Judge Doty fell for it. Unfortunately for the players, the 8th Circuit (or at least the majority of the judges) believes in substance over form, which reveals the players' legal strategy as nothing more than a scam.

And yet . . . the owners make the "robber barons" of the 1890s look like fine, upstanding citizens. Maybe the fans should ask for an injunction to keep the sides from settling, so that both sides could go broke.

Which is a problem for the museum, which is helped by its share of the revenue from that game. Losing $1,500,000 in a single shot is going to do harsh things to admission prices.

Just about everyone gets free agency after four years? Just four years in the league? Well, that still eliminates more than half the league... And 448 players go free agent as soon as everything kicks back in? With the teams having only so much time to work out a budget, an attack plan, and figure out who the the Redskins are going to waste money on? We're looking at a blood-in-the-water scramble a shark wouldn't go near.

Helmet to the groin: the rookie pay scale gets solidified to stop holdouts, and the franchise tag refuses to die.

The Bengals are notoriously cheap, and the Redskins would charge their employees to work there if they thought they could, so my guess is one of them.

The Dolphins will pay them, but they'll make the employees answer embarrassing personal questions about their mothers before giving them the checks.
