"R.I.P. Pat Burns"
LAST EDITED ON 11-19-10 AT 08:07 PM (EST)

What a career he had, and a great guy on top of it all. Passed away at age 58 today after a six-year battle with cancer. He lasted 62 days after it was first reported that he had 'died' but he likely was thought to be dead numerous times over the years -- I wouldn't have put it past him to last this long purely out of spite so he could laugh at all of the people who reported him dead (that's the kind of guy he was).

R.I.P. Pat Burns

ETA: Great story from Bob McKenzie over at TSN after it was first reported that Pat Burns had died in September then later got a phone call from him saying he was very much alive.

Although Burns was a successful coach, he wasn't a great "teacher" in that role; he left the technical stuff to his assistants. That accounted for his three-to-four year life in most of his jobs, because he wasn't developing the younger players.

And his teams were boring. Trap, trap, trap.

But I liked the guy. He had personality as a head coach, at least here in Boston and in New Jersey. Very few hockey coaches do.

I'd replace the word teacher by tactician. Here in Montreal, we've had a lot of testimonies from his former players and many pointed out that Burns taught them how to become men, how to concentrate on hockey and to stay out of trouble.

Stéphane Richer, for one, said that, without Burns, he would never have been an NHL player.

Pity that they didn't elect him to the Hall of Fame while he was still living. I heard Harry Sinden influenced the vote against him.

I would totally believe that Sinden sabotaged him. Sinden and his dimwitted puppet Mike O'Connell hated Burns here, in part because Burns wouldn't genuflect to Sinden, who probably still thinks that he is God's gift to hockey.

Sinden basically had complete control over the Bruins, even after he ostensibly retired, until the debacle of the poststrike 2005-06 season. From 2003 on, Sinden had assured Bruins' owner Jeremy Jacobs (as well as Bruins reporters) that he had the Bruins perfectly positioned to come out of the NFL strike with a championship team. Instead, they came out with a last=place team of scrubs. Jacobs fired the puppet GM, hired Peter Chiarelli as the new GM, and didn't object when Chiarelli told Sinden to get the he!! out of Boston.

Bit rough around the edges, but you couldn't help but respect the man.

RIP Pat.

Naturally that is all over the news here.

I hope that it was just a randon "smash and grab" that didn't realize what they were getting until they were in the car. Once in they probably panicked and kept going.

I also really hope that whoever did this finds a heart and secretly finds a way to return the items.

It's clear that the thieves knew full well whose stash they were taking from. Burns' wallet was raided and cards taken out with the wallet being left behind, plus there's all these hockey sweaters that were taken. It's Montreal and it's all over the news about Burns' death - no, the thieves knew what they were doing.

That's about as low as anyone could possibly get. No punishment is too severe.
