"Wimbledon tennis"
As I write this there is a match going on at Wimbledon that seems to have captured a bit of attention:

Mahut (FRA) 4 6 7 6 46
Isner 23 (USA) 6 3 6 7 47

How are these men still standing up?

Sunning with the Cap'n

Just another Sleeperbloke

Watch out he's blogging again

The final set has now taken longer than the previous longest entire game of tennis at a major.

Did I hear right? There were only 3 match points during that 59-59 ultra-marathon? Can either player return the ball? The only way this will end is if one player double-faults an entire game (or if one dies, whichever comes first.)

There were 4 match points, all break points held by Isner. One was a double match point. But Mahut saved them all.

Mahut had two break points, both in the same game. One was a double break point. But Isner saved them both.

Mahut appeared to be in much better shape than Isner at the end of the match. Isner appears to be a much better player, but he was having real difficulty in moving (not surprising after a 10-hour marathon).

They always said it was possible, but of course it could never really happen. So much for that and the impossible odds involved.

I think I'll get a lottery ticket.

How long until they delay the next round?
Will either of them be able to get out of bed to keep going?

After ending yesterday at 59-59 in the fifth, they are playing again on Thursday. Now tied 65-65, meaning they have played another full set today.

I heard Federer interviewed this morning. He was impressed at the level of play. He commented that he hopes that something special is done for these two as recognition for what they are doing for the sport.

now 67-67.

The commentators noted that the guy who will play the winner had a bit of a marathon in his previous match also, winning 16-14 in the fifth set. Won't he feel relatively rested!!

it is over. 70-68 for the American Isner.

Mahut tried to leave the court quickly, but was brought back out for a recognition ceremony for the umpire and two players.

Well done to the players, and well done to Wimbledon to making this special.

Isner, the next match.

Not surprisingly, the shortest match of the tournament as Isner bowed out quickly.

Another marathon tennis match, this time women at the Aussie Open, really deserves mention here.

These two women played for almost 5 hours (and no rain delays or darkness breaks) which is shocking when some women's matches are over in about an hour.

Notable is that the winner, Francesca Schiavone, played the #1 seeded woman in the very next match and took her to a very competitive three sets (though ultimately losing). (Isner, who won the men's marathon match at Wimbledon, went our very meekly in his next match).

But Schiavone is the #4 woman in the world. Even after an almost 5-hour match, she's unlikely to roll over.

Isner, however, played for three days. Roll. doggie, roll.

You're kidding, right?

A 7-in-1000 chance in the Wimbledon draw and it just happens that John Isner and Nicolas Mahut get drawn to face each other in the first round again? Coincidence, my azz.

A couple of comments from this article amused me.

it was just luck of the draw.

Bad luck.

Almost cruel, Isner said.

Not funny, Mahut told Isner the other day, when they talked about whether it might happen again.

The second time around, Isner won in straight sets, 7-6, 6-2, 7-6.

2 hours, 3 minutes. Simple.
