"NHL Playoff Discussion thread - Third Round"
As much as we all lvoe Deb and her monster thread, we need a more manageable thread as the playoffs continue.

I will make a sub topic for each series, and another for additional chatter.

1. "Round 3 - Blackhawks v. Sharks "
#1 and #2 in the west.
- San Jose ended the regular season with one point more than Chicago.
- Chicago ended the season with one more win than SJ.
- Chicago scored 5 more goals over the season than SJ (these teams ended up #3 and #4 in goal scoring during the season).
- Top player on San Jose (Thornton) has one more point than top player on Chicago (Kane) over the season.
- During the playoffs, the top player on Chicago (Toews) has 5 more points than the top San Jose player (Pavelski).
Chicago gave up 6 less goals over the season (these teams were #5 and #8 in that category)
- The average age of Chicago players must be about 5 years less than San Jose.
Goaltending will be Nabakov vs Niemi. Both have won all 8 playoff games for their teams. Nabokov has a slightly better GAA, and Niemi has a slightly better save%.

Should be a great series.

Game 1 is Sunday at 3:00 EDT (noon on the west coast)

13. "Game 1"
Sharks strike first on a PP goal by Demers. They look like the better team so far in this game, they've had more sustained drives and several golden opportunities to score but Niemi is playing well.

And now 2 down, with 2 to go. The Hawks look very good. Are they ready to stop 49 years (since 1961) of hockey suffering in Chicago?

Then where will that leave the Maple Leafs?

The fat lady has sung for the Sharks once again. After going up 2-0 in the second for the Sharks, it was all Blackhawks after that as they scored the next four goals and won the series in a sweep.

Now the Hawks get to veg out for a while as the Flyers/Habs get to beat themselves up a little more.

I'm going to name my next kid Byfuglien. Or pet. Whatever.

As a long-suffering Chicago sports fan (well, ok, the Bulls had a nice run in the 90s, and the Bears and the Sox came through once each within my lifetime, but other than that, zip. zilch. nada.) I'm gonna savor these finals. If I can bear to watch, that is.

Anyone out there got a 'Hawks siggie for me?

What a great run so far. I just wish I could be in Chicago to watch a game or two. I delayed my flight back this summer for two weeks to watch the group play in the World Cup here. Pepe gave me link for streaming games, but they're a little iffy and usually after midnight - a bugger when I have to be at work at 7. GO HAWKS!

Go Hawks Go!!!!

Loving hockey beyond your team opens you up to so much enjoyment. I feel bad for the people who quit watching when their team is done. I adore the Hawks. If it can't be the Penguins, I'm all about the Blackhawks. Dude, Duncan Keith lost seven teeth and came back to finish the game. That? is a man right there. so hot.

2. "Round 3 - Canadiens v. Flyers"
#7 and #8 in the west.
- Philly ended the regular season with one point more than Montreal (thanks to game 82 shoot-out win over NYR just to get into the playoffs).
- Philly ended the season with two more wins than Montreal.
- Philly scored 22 more goals over the season than Montreal (these teams ended up #8 and #25 in goal scoring during the season).
- Top player on Montreal (Plekanec) had 8 more points than top player on Philly (Richards) over the season.
- During the playoffs, the top player on Montreal (Cammilleri) has 1 more point than the top Philly player (Richards).
- Montreal gave up 4 less goals over the season (these teams were #13 and #15 in that category)
Goaltending will be Halak vs Leighton. Both have exceeded expectations in the playoffs, though Leighton has only played a few games following the injury to Boucher. Hard to imagine that Montreal doesn't have the advantage in goal.

Montreal certainly has more OT fans than Philly (is there anyone around here who is actually a Flyers fan?). Edge - Montreal!

Not looking too good for the Canadiens right now, down 4 goals to none to open the 3rd period. Halak was chased out of the net on the 4th goal.

Bottom line is that the team has to play better in front of him.

Let's hope history repeats itself - the Pens blew out the Habs 6-3 in game 1 of their series and chased Halak from the net. We all know how that series ended up.

I made a prediction before the series that the Flyers would win in 5 games because they're more experienced (3rd most series won over the past three seasons behind only Detroit and Pittsburgh). Let's hope I'm wrong again.

I wanted Philly to beat NJ. They did. I wanted Philly to beat Boston. They did. (I cheered on Gagne's GWG, excuse me, I mean SWG... and then I threw up in my mouth a little bit.) I've grown to not despise a few of the Flyers and have actually grown to like at least one of them quite a lot. I was fearful that some of that rooting for Philly would carry over. But now I honestly don't care who goes to the Finals from the East. At least not at the moment.

That said, it is early. The Habs will learn from Game 1 and regroup. I am optomistic that we will see a better result on Tuesday night.

I missed the game, but am certainly happy about the result. Traded email today with a former co-worker in Montreal, and apparently the game was certainly on his mind today. Montreal will be a happier place now.

Game 4 should be awesome. Go team! Here's hoping the Flyers have lost all their momentum.

Shame you missed it as it was a heck of a game. Habs came out strong and stayed that way, buoyed by the momentum of finally scoring a goal! Halek was awesome and allowed the Habs to take chances on the attack.

They win the next one and we have a whole new series!

It's Michael Fuggin' Leighton, who is a career journeyman for chrissakes. He's not the second coming of Patrick Roy or Martin Brodeur. Score on him, dammit.

Agreed Pepe - very frustrating.

I thought the Habs looked good for the first two thirds of the first period. Then the penalty seemed to shift the momentum, even though they killed it. They looked completely lost in the entire second period - one shot on goal?

You can't expect to win a series when they shut you out in three of the games.

Awwww Hobbs...you sound like my daughter-in-law, though she isn't generally all anti-Hawks, just when they play the Wings. In fact, she and my son have been cheering for the Hawks to make the finals SO they can see Hossa lose again for the third year in a row. May it not be so!

One thing about the team now, they really aren't depending on Hossa a whole lot. He hasn't scored much and been a major factor in the playoffs. If you really look at the team and what they are doing with the young guys and Niemi it's pretty interesting.

I'm surprised Niemi has not been exposed yet. He is not a top goalie. Yes, I like the guys on the team but it's the fan's that I hate. They came in here since I've had season tickets and get all jacked up and talking smack even if they lose. We say 1961 and point to the banners. Win something and then you can talk smack, ask the NE fans perfect regular season, no smack because not only did they lose the SB but to Eli. If Chicago loses the Cup it will be to a 3rd string goalie.

I'm with you on the fans. The last time I attended a game in the old Stadium was in 1979. I was getting ready to introduce my young son to the game and then I realized I couldn't expose him to "legalized" thuggery on the ice. I hated how fighting was encouraged. So, I left the game I loved and didn't look back for 26 or 27 years - not until I had been here for a while and started talking hockey with some Canadian friends here (what else can they talk about, eh?) and they convinced me it was time to come back. The good news - the rules had changed, Bill Wirtz died, Rocky took over and it's been smooth sailing since. The fans? A core of holdovers from the bad old days whom I wouldn't really like to hang out with after the game. And, I was all behind the Wings the last couple of times they made the finals.

On Niemi - we'll see. He's been awfully good and outdueled some pretty decent tenders in the first three series. He's only had one bad game. Maybe he's not a top goalie, but he may be developing into a pretty good one. One of those Canadian friends assessed the playoffs before they began and prophecied that the Hawks had no chance because of their weak goaltending - a killer in the playoffs. I've not gotten back to him yet. I don't like to trash talk in the middle of the series. I like to wait until it's over to be sure.

NE? I couldn't agree more - one of the sweetest moments in sports history not involving my teams. Almost as good as the Cubs getting past 100 seasons without you know what. I wish Shakes had been around to discuss that when it happened.

Campbell is the key to Chicago. Look at Niemi when he was out the first games vs. Nashville vs. when he was in. Chicago is a different team defensively and they take the Niemi factor out of the game. If Campbell stayed out they would have lost vs. Nashville. Vancouver Logo went Logo and then the Sharks went Sharks as Jonny feel apart in net like I thought he would against Detroit but then he had a lot of ref help at times.

You have to play smart against Chicago and pick your spots because if you mess up they have a heck of an offense to break out and counter but Campbell, like Nick here, has that eye for a tape to tape break out pass or get a clear or take the puck or the shot away that just kills the other team. Hit them and hit them a lot like Nashville did....then they have a ton of guys who won't go into the corners and thus giving up a big part of what you need to do to win.

Evgeni Nabokov - one day he told the press he wanted to be called Johnny and the next day not.

I thought the Sharks would self destruct like they have in the pass playoffs (Sharks going Sharks).

All the 5 on 3's the Sharks got against the Wings who were the least penalized team during the reg season but all of a sudden were the most in the playoffs.

When I don't have a rooting interest, (which sometimes means a rooting disinterest - anyone but X), then I'll go for the team who hasn't won in the longest time, and that would be the Hawks. It would be nice for Hossa to finally win one too. Besides, no team that made the playoffs on a shootout should win. Crazy.

In either case, someone is winning a Gold Medal and the Cup in the same year.

This playoff year has been all about symmetry.
Round West Seed / East Seed
1 1,2,3,5 / 8,7,6,4
2 1,2 / 8,7
3 2 / 7

That's pretty amazing.

One of my co-workers is a Flyers fan from the Broad Street Bullies days (as he put it, he watched the games back in the 70s, and got attached to the team that, as he put it, "when they couldn't beat the other teams, would start beating them.")

My wife hates the Blackhawks. (Last year, we went to a game at the Joe...Wings vs. Hawks. Several rows back, a visiting fan shouted "HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWKS!!!!!!" at the top of her lungs at random intervals.)

Yet I still root for the Blackhawks.

The best reason to do so: Ian LaPerriere. This from a Wings fan with a long memory.

I had to go to bed at 1:20 - I just felt like the Hawks couldn't stop anything and I needed sleep more than the aggrevation. Most of the game (up to that point)was spent in their zone and they coudln't clear the puck. A minute later the Hawks scored to tie it up - guess I should have stayed up. I actually dreamed they lost 9-5. Glad to escape with a winner and I hope this wakes them up. This is no cakewalk and trust they'll play better tomorrow night.

Discussion overheard in meeting with the Hawks coaching staff:

"Defense wins championships."

"But we don't know how to play defense."

"Screw defense. Let's just score a lot of goals. A really really really lot of goals."

Consider this: When the high-flying Oilers beat Philly to win the Cup in 1987, a total of 40 goals was scored in the 7 game series (I'm not sure, but I think is the record). This year's series is already at 40 goals through 5 games (11, 3, 7, 8, and 11), so even a 1-0 Chicago win in game 6 will give this series the record. Regardless of which team wins, the "defense wins championships" adage will not hold true this year.

Thanks Pepe. I couldn't find a stat, so went digging in a slow and painful method on Wiki. I figured that the record would have been a 7 or maybe 6 game series, so didn't look at the 5-game '81 seried. Wow, the Isles really lit up the North Stars goaltending that year. (6, 6, 7, 2, and 5 goals for the Isles in the 5 games). I wonder how many time the North Stars goals (3, 3, 5, 4, 1) would have won them more than 1 game!

I will be shocked if this year's series doesn't end up with more total goals, if not a higher goals/game.

Sorry guys. The record for any series is by Montreal/Chicago in 1973 - 33 by the Habs and 23 by the Hawks for a total of 56.
Montreal won it in six. The Hawks beat the Canadiens in game 5 by a score of 8-7 - 27% of the goals in the series.

Second is 51 by the Islanders and Flyers, also won in 6 by the Isles.

Not because I got the record wrong, but because I should have dug deeper into Montreal Canadien results, especially 1973. That was likely the year that as an 8 year old I chose my hockey idol - Yvan Cournoyer - who scored the Cup winning goal and was MVP of the playoffs.

Thanks for the correction, and for taking me down memory lane to such a great era of hockey (for Montreal fans!).

I know there were some high-scoring doozies prior to '81, and actually was surprised after hearing that bit earlier that the record didn't belong to the Oilers and whoever they'd be playing against as it was an era of real barn-burning hockey throughout the 1980s.

Will the Cup be presented tonight? Less than 5 minutes to go and Chicago is up 3-2.

Philly has had some pretty incredible comebacks these playoffs, but it seems to me they are running out of gas.

And just like that the game is tied with 4 minutes to go in regulation.

The challenge now for Chicago will be to get back in offense mode after playing back most of the 3rd period.

Will this game make it to OT???

And this game will go to a 4th period.

Chicago needs the intermission to compose themselves and get back into scoring mode to win the Cup, rather than that 3rd period where they were just trying to hold their lead. I predict Chicago will come out fast to go for the win. But if Philly can withstand the initial barrage...

Overtime and Chicago has only itself to blame. They were controlling the game putting presure in the offensive zone and then, with little over 8 minutes left, they changed for a more defensive style letting the Flyers skate with the puck.

Kane scores, but the puck disappears in the net and nobody but Kane seems to know it is in. The whistle doesn't blow, but Kane skates down the ice throwing equipment into the air. Very bizarre finish.

I'll say it was a weird finish but the replay shows the puck clearly went in.

(Now the Leafs are the team that has been the longest since the last cup win: 1967!! When you're from Montreal, that always brings a smile)

Ok, some expansion teams have never won and Ottawa hasn't won it since coming back in the league but who cares? 1967!!

most of the boos were for Bettman but they for sure boo'ed a few players. In their defense (can't believe I said that) they did cheer a few as well. Philly fans showed a lot more respect than I ever expected from them.

That has to be one of the strangest ends to a Stanley Cup ever. It felt somewhat anti-climatic without the usual immediate erruption all over the ice normally seen. I can't see the puck all that well on my stream as it is, but it seems almost no one else saw it either even at the game.

Great win for the Hawks who dominated the play for the majority of the game. But, give Philly credit for their toughness and hanging in and taking advantage of the few opportunities they got. Even though the winner should be classified as a soft goal, Leighton did a fine job overall for the team. He had brilliant flashes, but inconsistency at crucial times paired with some poor defense now and then did him in.

I'm a bit tired now. Stayed up to watch that final goal when it was scored at 3:07 a.m. here, then another 15 minutes of celebration until my stream shut down. Didin't sleep much after that as I had to be at work at 6. I'll sleep more tongiht!

Congrats Sittem. I am very happy for you that your team won, and kudos to you for staying up and watching fro so far away. Will you be organizing a parade for Black Hawk fans in your area?

I certainly agree with the anti-climatic finish. Kane seemed the only one who knew the puck had gone in, and while he immediately started to celebrate everyone else - the other players, the referee, the commentators, the crowd, and even the TV audience (who usually see more than those in attendence) - all stood wondering where the puck was. Even after the rest of the Hawks piled onto Kane, the referee skated to the penalty box to seemingly start a video review. It was even another minute after that that the PA announcer came on and explained to the crowd that game was, in fact, over.

I guess it was a bit of a soft goal, but in OT maybe there are no softies. Hard to tell, since so few actually saw the puck go in. Maybe the puck had a funny bounce. The goal was eerily reminiscent of the OT goal scored by Sidney Crosby at the Olympics - another goal coming in from the same side that seemed to go in despite the bad angle. I think in both situations the key was a quick shot that the goalie didn't expect given the angle.

I hope your short sleep had happy dreams, Sittem. With this great pool of talent and Rocky dong his thing, I will be shocked if it is 49 years until Chicago wins another Cup. (and even if it is another 49, it will still probably be before the Leafs win another )

Thanks byoffer. Regarding the goal, Barry Melrose has some interesting comments on ESPN on an audio feed about it. First, he says he saw it unfold live and knew it was in. He also says he felt Leighton thought Kane was going to circle the net because of the angle or may have been distracted by the traffic in front and was in transition and was surprised by the shot. Feeling a little weary now around dinner time. Gotta get to bed early tonight as I've got to take someone to the airport at 5 a.m.

I am thrilled at the outcome of this season. Only one thing could have made me happier. I adore Jonathan Toews. He was incredibly humble after being awarded the Conn Smythe. Yes, Captain you are deserving.

Ha! When Pierre told Kane to be on his best behaviour during the celebrations and he's all, "Not a chance. NOT A CHANCE!" If he'd have answered any other way, I'd have been disappointed. I am awed by Patty Kane's skills and entertained by his... ummm... shenanigans.

And I fall more and more in love with Marian Hossa every day. He so deserved to raise the Cup. The desire and desperation he played with through these playoffs was special to see. I'm glad that I, unlike so many in my area, was able to watch him as a fan and that I was able to be happy for him. He deserves it.

edited to add that little bit of awesomeness

And now, Ville Leino (lost Cup Finals last year with Detroit, lost this year with Philly) is the new Marian Hossa.

I'm very happy for Hossa though. I've heard that he's the first Ottawa drafted player to win the Cup so good for him.

It sure is shiny.

I still think that is the best trophy in North American professional sports (and maybe wider, though I can't say I know all the trophies in the world). NFL and NBA have boring trophies, and I hate the MLB one. Tennis and golf have some nice trophies, particularly for the majors, not as good as the Stanley Cup IMO. Personally I do not like the FIFA world cup trophy, though winning it is arguably the biggest honour in team sport.

And the Stanley Cup traditions are the best also, with the way the players carry it, pass it from player to player, and get to take it home with them each for a day in the following year. I saw it on display with a lot of the other NHL trophies in Vancouver in 1994 (damn Rangers) and was just in awe.

It's absolutely the best trophy in sports (IMO natch). For me, it's because of the players. Their emotions are powerful and infectious. I have been a superlucky fan the past two years because my team won and then my second favorite team won. ~oh how I'd love to move to Chicago for a month.~ It's hard to say for sure but I bet I'd shed a tear for any team lucky enough to win it. They play their whole lives for the chance to raise that Cup over their heads. And there's at least one player on every team who I have a little soft spot for. (Yes, yes, even the Flyers... though I am so happy they didn't win. Sorry Simon.)

I can't wait to read the Stanley Cup journal entries again this year. I just got my reminder email. squee. Can you imagine how much liquor gets poured into that thing?

Can you imagine how much liquor gets poured into that thing?

Ever read the history of the Stanley Cup? The great trophy has an equally amazing history (a lot of it can be found here).

An excerpt:
The Cup has also been mistreated, misplaced, or otherwise misused on numerous occasions. In 1905, a member of the Ottawa Senators tried to drop kick the Cup across the Rideau Canal. The attempt failed, and the Cup was not retrieved until the next day; luckily the canal was still frozen over. In 1906, weeks after members of the Montreal Wanderers left it at a photographer's studio, officials learned that the photographer's mother was using the Cup to plant geraniums. In 1907, a Kenora Thistles team manager threatened to throw the Cup into the Lake of the Woods in a dispute over the eligibility of two Thistles players.

In 1924, members of the Montreal Canadiens, en route to celebrate their win at owner Leo Dandurand's home, left it by the road after repairing a flat tire. The Cup was recovered exactly where they left it. In 1925, Lynn and Muzz Patrick, the sons of Victoria Cougars manager-coach Lester Patrick, discovered the Cup in the basement of their home, and scratched their names on it with a nail. In 1940, their names were properly engraved on it as members of the champion New York Rangers. They also urinated in the Cup with teammates.

During the 1940–41 NHL season, the mortgage on Madison Square Garden was paid. The management publicly celebrated by burning the mortgage in the Cup. Some fans claimed this act "desecrated" the Cup, leading to the Curse of 1940, which allegedly caused the Rangers to wait 54 years for another win.

In 1957, Maurice "Rocket" Richard chipped both of his front teeth while drinking from the Stanley Cup.

In the Chicago Stadium, in the spring of 1961, the Montreal Canadiens were losing the final game of a Playoff series to the Chicago Blackhawks. A Montreal fan (Ken Kilander) in the stands was upset, so he left his seat, ran down to the front lobby and broke into the glass showcase where the Stanley Cup was on display. He grabbed the Cup, hoisted it over his shoulders and made for the exit before he was arrested. In court, he explained his behaviour to the judge: "Your Honour, I was simply bringing the Cup back to Montreal where it belongs."

There's a lot more (much of which seems more contrived than the old stuff) but decided to cut off there because I agree with that last sentence.

Seeing the Hawks win it was bittersweet.

On one hand, the Hawks deserve it - 49 years of nothing but frustration, the Bill Wirtz era, and the perfect juxtaposition of this year's Finals. The President and VP on opposite sides. Jeremy Roenick as an analyst for a series between two teams he played for.

But damn it, it still sucked to see Marian Hossa get his Cup in a Blackhawks uniform. I can't say I truly understand how Bruins fans felt when Bourque won it with Colorado, considering the Red Wings have been the most successful team of the last 15 years, but I know how close the Wings were last year.

I also hope the torch isn't being passed, and the Wings can keep up with the Hawks.

A first rounder who just entered the league and a third rounder who just went to the Memorial cup is pretty good for someone that can ask for arbitration. Budget-wise it makes even more sense. The head office really liked the attitude shown by Price when he was benched. The guy finally understood he had to work.

Eller was a first round pick, yes ... but that was three seasons ago and he hasn't done much, with 7 games to show for it in the NHL so far. He's ranked as a 7 (meaning possible second-line player) and a C ("may reach potential") on the Hockey's Future website.

I'd feel a lot better about Eller's prospects if he was learning as he goes in the NHL instead of being on the farm at age 21. I'll be happy if he proves me wrong, I just think the Habs could have gotten a more established player for Halak. And it's a bit of a *gulp* moment to realize we're now totally dependent on Carey Price who has yet to show he can handle the pressure over the long term.

IMO it is a very risky move from a fan perspective. If they had kept Halak and traded Price, then they could have pointed at the playoffs and at least said they made the decision for a reason. Fans would likely give more rope to the GM for acting based on what Halak did in the playoffs. Keeping Price and trading Halak has a lot of fan risk if Price doesn't get to the level that Halak showed in the playoffs (which may have been a fluke, but is fresh in the fans memory).

I sure echo Pepe's *gulp* about Price becoming a solid #1 and the trades paying off.

Most of my friends reacted the same way. I was just giving the team's point of view. It's been Price ever since they drafted him. Carbonneau lost his job in part because he wanted to go with Halak the year before. Price's main problem was his work ethic and most that know him said he finally matured, read he decided to stop partying.

The playoffs showed that the Canadiens need power forwards that can score. Speaking of partyers, Serguey Kostitsyn simple has to go. Tomas Plekanec may go since he'll be a free agent. Both the prospects have size and offensive potential.
