Sharks strike first on a PP goal by Demers. They look like the better team so far in this game, they've had more sustained drives and several golden opportunities to score but Niemi is playing well.

I'm with you on the fans. The last time I attended a game in the old Stadium was in 1979. I was getting ready to introduce my young son to the game and then I realized I couldn't expose him to "legalized" thuggery on the ice. I hated how fighting was encouraged. So, I left the game I loved and didn't look back for 26 or 27 years - not until I had been here for a while and started talking hockey with some Canadian friends here (what else can they talk about, eh?) and they convinced me it was time to come back. The good news - the rules had changed, Bill Wirtz died, Rocky took over and it's been smooth sailing since. The fans? A core of holdovers from the bad old days whom I wouldn't really like to hang out with after the game. And, I was all behind the Wings the last couple of times they made the finals. On Niemi - we'll see. He's been awfully good and outdueled some pretty decent tenders in the first three series. He's only had one bad game. Maybe he's not a top goalie, but he may be developing into a pretty good one. One of those Canadian friends assessed the playoffs before they began and prophecied that the Hawks had no chance because of their weak goaltending - a killer in the playoffs. I've not gotten back to him yet. I don't like to trash talk in the middle of the series. I like to wait until it's over to be sure. NE? I couldn't agree more - one of the sweetest moments in sports history not involving my teams. Almost as good as the Cubs getting past 100 seasons without you know what. I wish Shakes had been around to discuss that when it happened.

When I don't have a rooting interest, (which sometimes means a rooting disinterest - anyone but X), then I'll go for the team who hasn't won in the longest time, and that would be the Hawks. It would be nice for Hossa to finally win one too. Besides, no team that made the playoffs on a shootout should win. Crazy. In either case, someone is winning a Gold Medal and the Cup in the same year. This playoff year has been all about symmetry. Round West Seed / East Seed 1 1,2,3,5 / 8,7,6,4 2 1,2 / 8,7 3 2 / 7 That's pretty amazing.

65. "RE: Game 5" |
Discussion overheard in meeting with the Hawks coaching staff:"Defense wins championships." "But we don't know how to play defense." "Screw defense. Let's just score a lot of goals. A really really really lot of goals." Consider this: When the high-flying Oilers beat Philly to win the Cup in 1987, a total of 40 goals was scored in the 7 game series (I'm not sure, but I think is the record). This year's series is already at 40 goals through 5 games (11, 3, 7, 8, and 11), so even a 1-0 Chicago win in game 6 will give this series the record. Regardless of which team wins, the "defense wins championships" adage will not hold true this year.

I read earlier today that this is the highest scoring Finals series since the 1981 series between the Islanders and the North Stars which had 42 goals through the first five games (Isles won in 5 games, with the goals being at a 26-16 margin).

Thanks Pepe. I couldn't find a stat, so went digging in a slow and painful method on Wiki. I figured that the record would have been a 7 or maybe 6 game series, so didn't look at the 5-game '81 seried. Wow, the Isles really lit up the North Stars goaltending that year. (6, 6, 7, 2, and 5 goals for the Isles in the 5 games). I wonder how many time the North Stars goals (3, 3, 5, 4, 1) would have won them more than 1 game!I will be shocked if this year's series doesn't end up with more total goals, if not a higher goals/game.

And just like that the game is tied with 4 minutes to go in regulation. The challenge now for Chicago will be to get back in offense mode after playing back most of the 3rd period. Will this game make it to OT???

LAST EDITED ON 06-09-10 AT 11:17 PM (EST)I'll say it was a weird finish but the replay shows the puck clearly went in. (Now the Leafs are the team that has been the longest since the last cup win: 1967!! When you're from Montreal, that always brings a smile)
Ok, some expansion teams have never won and Ottawa hasn't won it since coming back in the league but who cares? 1967!!

Congrats Sittem. I am very happy for you that your team won, and kudos to you for staying up and watching fro so far away. Will you be organizing a parade for Black Hawk fans in your area? I certainly agree with the anti-climatic finish. Kane seemed the only one who knew the puck had gone in, and while he immediately started to celebrate everyone else - the other players, the referee, the commentators, the crowd, and even the TV audience (who usually see more than those in attendence) - all stood wondering where the puck was. Even after the rest of the Hawks piled onto Kane, the referee skated to the penalty box to seemingly start a video review. It was even another minute after that that the PA announcer came on and explained to the crowd that game was, in fact, over. I guess it was a bit of a soft goal, but in OT maybe there are no softies. Hard to tell, since so few actually saw the puck go in. Maybe the puck had a funny bounce. The goal was eerily reminiscent of the OT goal scored by Sidney Crosby at the Olympics - another goal coming in from the same side that seemed to go in despite the bad angle. I think in both situations the key was a quick shot that the goalie didn't expect given the angle. I hope your short sleep had happy dreams, Sittem. With this great pool of talent and Rocky dong his thing, I will be shocked if it is 49 years until Chicago wins another Cup. (and even if it is another 49, it will still probably be before the Leafs win another )

LAST EDITED ON 06-10-10 AT 10:09 AM (EST)I am thrilled at the outcome of this season. Only one thing could have made me happier. I adore Jonathan Toews. He was incredibly humble after being awarded the Conn Smythe. Yes, Captain you are deserving. Ha! When Pierre told Kane to be on his best behaviour during the celebrations and he's all, "Not a chance. NOT A CHANCE!" If he'd have answered any other way, I'd have been disappointed. I am awed by Patty Kane's skills and entertained by his... ummm... shenanigans. And I fall more and more in love with Marian Hossa every day. He so deserved to raise the Cup. The desire and desperation he played with through these playoffs was special to see. I'm glad that I, unlike so many in my area, was able to watch him as a fan and that I was able to be happy for him. He deserves it. edited to add that little bit of awesomeness
What a fantastic team. oh and the water cannons upon their arrival back in Chicago!

Can you imagine how much liquor gets poured into that thing? Ever read the history of the Stanley Cup? The great trophy has an equally amazing history (a lot of it can be found here). An excerpt: The Cup has also been mistreated, misplaced, or otherwise misused on numerous occasions. In 1905, a member of the Ottawa Senators tried to drop kick the Cup across the Rideau Canal. The attempt failed, and the Cup was not retrieved until the next day; luckily the canal was still frozen over. In 1906, weeks after members of the Montreal Wanderers left it at a photographer's studio, officials learned that the photographer's mother was using the Cup to plant geraniums. In 1907, a Kenora Thistles team manager threatened to throw the Cup into the Lake of the Woods in a dispute over the eligibility of two Thistles players. In 1924, members of the Montreal Canadiens, en route to celebrate their win at owner Leo Dandurand's home, left it by the road after repairing a flat tire. The Cup was recovered exactly where they left it. In 1925, Lynn and Muzz Patrick, the sons of Victoria Cougars manager-coach Lester Patrick, discovered the Cup in the basement of their home, and scratched their names on it with a nail. In 1940, their names were properly engraved on it as members of the champion New York Rangers. They also urinated in the Cup with teammates. During the 1940–41 NHL season, the mortgage on Madison Square Garden was paid. The management publicly celebrated by burning the mortgage in the Cup. Some fans claimed this act "desecrated" the Cup, leading to the Curse of 1940, which allegedly caused the Rangers to wait 54 years for another win. In 1957, Maurice "Rocket" Richard chipped both of his front teeth while drinking from the Stanley Cup. In the Chicago Stadium, in the spring of 1961, the Montreal Canadiens were losing the final game of a Playoff series to the Chicago Blackhawks. A Montreal fan (Ken Kilander) in the stands was upset, so he left his seat, ran down to the front lobby and broke into the glass showcase where the Stanley Cup was on display. He grabbed the Cup, hoisted it over his shoulders and made for the exit before he was arrested. In court, he explained his behaviour to the judge: "Your Honour, I was simply bringing the Cup back to Montreal where it belongs." There's a lot more (much of which seems more contrived than the old stuff) but decided to cut off there because I agree with that last sentence.

A first rounder who just entered the league and a third rounder who just went to the Memorial cup is pretty good for someone that can ask for arbitration. Budget-wise it makes even more sense. The head office really liked the attitude shown by Price when he was benched. The guy finally understood he had to work.
