"It;'s LeBron's decision..."
...the rest of us just get to live in a world where that decision is all certain sports people talk about for the next four months.

Within the limits of trade, free agency, and the draft, the Cavaliers gave him anything he wanted. Backup forward? Coming right up, sir. Center to clog the lane? Have we got a hairball for you! They gave him everything he could possibly desire -- except a ring. And some people feel that gives him the excuse to leave -- mostly the same group who feel his departure would effectively kill the entire franchise, and possibly the city.

You know it's a major free agency period when the fans go into conspiracy theory. 'He tanked the fifth game! He lost the whole thing on purpose so he'd have a reason to leave us!' Uh-huh. Or maybe he had a bad game. Possibly he's a player whom pressure gets to. If you like, he was distracted by his bids for that Manhattan apartment. No way to know, really.

What good does leaving Cleveland do him? If he wants a ring as his first priority, the teams which can offer him the most money aren't necessarily the ones who can build around him all that fast -- there's no instant plug-and-play on the horizon. (Oddly, if the Nets land that #1 pick plus LeBron, they may be as close as anyone. Worst to first?) If he wants raw cash -- well, in his sport, there's only so much he can make in straight salary, and at his level of celebrity, many of the endorsements come to him. Heading to a major market will increase his paydays -- just not necessarily all that much.

What does he want? To be wined and dined? Told how much everyone loves him? A cross-country flirtathon?

I know what I want. I want this to be over by July 1st.

For a city that has not won anything since 1964 they sure do talk a lot of smack. I would not blame him for leaving, it's the way life is in the NBA and thus why I don't watch any more.

Must be -- I just heard the earliest possible signing dates. If they managed to retain him, the Cavaliers can make an announcement as soon as July 1st: no other team can publicly open their mouth until July 8th. This doesn't stop agents from saying 'we're going to sign the papers in (insert city here) next week', but the teams themselves have to follow those dates.

And this just came down the wire: the Cavaliers have fired their head coach.

They'll do anything, for that dear, anything...

But even in the NBA winning a championship is not the only measure of greatness.

Just ask Charles Barkley, Reggie Miller, Karl Malone, John Stockton, Steve Nash?, etc. etc. etc.

9. "Well..."
let's go with a widely-respected measure of greatness: NBA MVP awards. There are only 12 players who have won the MVP more than once:

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (6)
Bill Russell (5)
Michael Jordan (5)
Wilt Chamberlain (4)
Moses Malone (3)
Magic Johnson (3)
Larry Bird (3)
Bob Pettit (2)
Karl Malone (2)
Tim Duncan (2)
Steve Nash (2)
LeBron James (2)

That's our starting point to determine the best player of all-time. LeBron not only wants to be in that discussion, but he wants to win it. But there are only 3 people on that list who never won an NBA title: K. Malone, Nash and LeBron. Nobody has ever won 3 MVPs and not won a title.

My best guess is that LeBron focuses on winning titles and goes to Dallas to play for Mark Cuban.

Apparently Nash has played the most games without even making it to the Finals. I am hoping he gets to the Finals and even wins this year.

The pundits I heard today were suggesting that James going to Miami or Chicago would give him a very good title shot, but that going to the lowly Nets would give him the biggest paycheck, media blitz, and richest owner going forward.

According to this, the Nets (who will be shifting GMs) are up first, the Knicks are scrambling for a plan that isn't 'Hit him in the face with Manhattan until he dies', and the spectacle should be semi-localized. Not the worst decision on his group's part -- a calm room beats out shock-and-awe campaigns, gives him the home field, and may prevent traffic accidents nationwide.

It might even be the mature call. Wouldn't you like to know who actually made it?

Maybe he could interview housekeepers and nannies while he's in the mood. This is getting out of control. I want it to be over already!

From HoopsHype:

James has apparently decided, according to various outlets, to host potential suitors in Ohio once free agency officially opens Thursday. In addition to meeting with Cleveland, the five outside hopefuls believed to be visiting LeBron on his turf are New York, New Jersey, Chicago, Miami and the Los Angeles Clippers. Dallas is working feverishly to get into that mix, a league source confirmed to NBA.com Sunday. The Mavericks are hopelessly over the cap, unlike those other five teams, but that hasn't dampened the front office's enthusiasm for taking a swing at LeBron. NBA.com

They're not the first rumors to claim some degree of collusion between the top free agents. It wouldn't surprise me if they were trying to plan out the league's future to some degree -- and as long as it doesn't get down to 'I'll throw it this year if you throw it next year', they're legal.

28. "RE: It;'s LeBron's decision..."
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the Knicks make him an offer he can't refuse. But I ultimately believe that Lebron either stays with the Cavs, or moves to Chicago. Out of all the teams courting him, only Chicago has a shot at contending right away, assuming that the others don't get multiple big names along with James. Yes, the Heat would be an immediate contender, but I find it hard to believe that he and Wade would want to play together, so I'm ruling them out.

And to be fair to James, I still think the Cavs are the single most overrated team in the NBA, so getting out of Cleveland isn't a bad option. They literally have no second scoring option on their team, which is a must in order to win the NBA title. Yes, management has put a few nice pieces in place so that they can breeze through the regular season, but this is simply a terrible playoff team. They're like the San Diego Chargers of the NBA.

But let's not completely blast him: while ESPN and various sponsors would be paying for this Very Special Hour, LeBron isn't getting the cash. All funds raised, as per our DAW's wishes, will go to the Boys & Girls Club Of America.

Even so -- yeesh.

It's not as if there's much else on.

33. "Necessary information comes out tonight."
The exact figure for next season's salary cap. ESPN's been discussing it: if LeBron's target is Miami, then they can currently only get him if they manage a trade or two as part of the deal and the projected new cap is exactly where they think it is: they'd just barely squeak in under the hoped-for wire. But if the salary cap is any lower than anticipated, they're pretty much out.

I think this might be a major piece of the reason LeBron's waiting. He doesn't know if he can head south -- yet.

39. "Current rumors: Miami."
Combination of:

* getting to play with Bosh & Wade.

* salary cap space available

* no state income tax

* city nightlife (no doubt)

From the reported pass-alongs, some people in his camp were trying to talk him out of it with advice like 'It'll dilute your brand!' Don't play with quality teammates or people won't pay as much attention to you -- how's that for entourage DAWs? And there's also the idea that it's Wade's team and everyone else would be his supporting cast...

We could see a 'too many stars, only one ball' problem evolve here if everyone can't keep stat drives and egos in simul-check. But if they can, then this is a potential powerhouse team. It's just not one with the ability to adjust its roster on the fly.

I agree with Gene. Let's call it The Mistake. Disregard my dislike for the outcome... I never in a million years thought he would schedule and hour-long show if he was going to diss Cleveland. I thought the fact that we were having this dog and pony show was the confirmation he was returning.

From Mo Williams twitter:
I can't believe this is really real. This is surreal. So many emotions on one man decision. I wonder what is our next move. The only thing, and I mean the only thing I disagree with is.... If he knew somewhere else was the destination he should have spared cle on national tv. But this was history so we might not understand the magnitude today. But when we look back on this, we might not never see this again. Love u bron and always will. I knowu made your decision for the rt reason but we could have got it done here and u would have enjoyed.......The person that I feel most sorry for is mike brown. He is a really good coach.

MegaDAW is being kind.

Was that not the most amazing trainwreck of a show you've ever seen? I really felt like this was the finale of The Apprentice, not the announcement of a player's team destination. From the pointless rambling by the ESPN crew, to the pointless questioning leading up to the announcement that dragged on and on and on and on, to James spitting in Cleveland's face on national tv. Absolutely amazing. That had to be the most embarrasing television event I've ever watched. Seriously, Lebron and ESPN should be ashamed of themselves for that crap.

Of course, ESPN spent all day trying to justify it. I heard "Well, that's the age we live in now" used more than once today during shows like "Around the Horn" and "Pardon the Interruption". Please! Just because you CAN show us a pile of sh!t, doesn't mean that you SHOULD show us a pile of sh!t!

What I don't get here: why is it so wrong for a potentially great player to want other such players as teammates? Do you always have to be alpha dog -- especially in a league where it takes at least two stars on a team to win?

Not arguing most of the other sentiments here. But 'playing with talent means you're a wimp' doesn't make sense.

Possibly because of the whole 'we built our lives around you for years' aspect: this is more betrayed lover than franchise owner -- although this particular owner's made a few blunders along the way himself. It says something about the magnitude of LeBron's PR screwup/image destruction to have management coming across as the good guy. And that something ain't good.

BTW, the Heat are having a celebration party in a little while to introduce their Miami Thrice (or whatever you want to call this threesome....) to the fans, and they're sold out of season tickets for the season already....... Also, none of the three have officially signed the contracts yet, but since Bosh and James both have other commitments the rest of the weekend, and the negotiations are relatively close enough........ I agree he has been surrounded since age 15 by people telling him he is a god. He now has a fantastic fat ego.

"I made the decision this morning"-?-please
He has had this in the works since the 2008 Olympics team and certainly was thinking about it back in Nov 2009 while the Cavs were playing in Miami LeBron announced he would be changing his number next year to #6- funny how the Heat have retired #23 but not the Cavs.

Cuban wants an investigation regardless of the facts that both Toronto and Cleveland are apparently waving off the thought of asking for a Tampering inquiry, and that they actually both did sign-and-trade deals with Miami for Bosh and James, respectively... As well as the notion that NBA doesn't actively pursue player contact between teams as much as front offices talking to a player that's not theirs before free agency...

I think that analogy falls apart in that the NBA (and other pro sports) have a bunch of strange rules like salary caps and things to stop the owners from colluding on the players. Is there a rule to prevent the players from doing the same thing?

That said, Cuban still doesn't have a chance at blocking this.

75. "Here it comes..."
LeBron will be in Akron on Saturday to host a bike-a-thon: something he does every year.

Akron is thirty-five miles from Cleveland.

People will come, Ray. People will most definitely come.

He took out a full-page ad in the Akron paper thanking the city for their support. Never mentioned Cleveland.

77. "'The Heat are 9-7.' bump."
The predictions of a 75-win season may have been slightly premature.

Where do you start to count the problems? The top three can't always agree on who's getting the ball, although two of them generally seem to feel it isn't going to be Bosh. Given the percentage of the salary cap committed to the trio, there was no real room to build a bench: once the triad gets tired, the Heat almost get to play Tallest Bodies Available. And taking your talents to South Beach at night might mean your talent staggers home with a killer hangover at eleven a.m. and no memory of the intervening time.

The trip to Cleveland is coming up. What's the world record for booing duration?

I'm at least going to watch through the player introductions and check back in a few times during the game. And I hope Guinness sent a representative. We could be looking at the new world record in sustained booing.

Do you think the city's had enough time to master circular breathing?

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

'Wouldn't it make my Decision look better if other players were forced into the same situation? And how do I force that to happen? Recommend that several thousand people be put out of work! Happened in Cleveland all the time! Sure, this time, some of them are players, but it's not as if they could ever hold that against me!'
