"It;'s LeBron's decision..." |
...the rest of us just get to live in a world where that decision is all certain sports people talk about for the next four months. Within the limits of trade, free agency, and the draft, the Cavaliers gave him anything he wanted. Backup forward? Coming right up, sir. Center to clog the lane? Have we got a hairball for you! They gave him everything he could possibly desire -- except a ring. And some people feel that gives him the excuse to leave -- mostly the same group who feel his departure would effectively kill the entire franchise, and possibly the city. You know it's a major free agency period when the fans go into conspiracy theory. 'He tanked the fifth game! He lost the whole thing on purpose so he'd have a reason to leave us!' Uh-huh. Or maybe he had a bad game. Possibly he's a player whom pressure gets to. If you like, he was distracted by his bids for that Manhattan apartment. No way to know, really. What good does leaving Cleveland do him? If he wants a ring as his first priority, the teams which can offer him the most money aren't necessarily the ones who can build around him all that fast -- there's no instant plug-and-play on the horizon. (Oddly, if the Nets land that #1 pick plus LeBron, they may be as close as anyone. Worst to first?) If he wants raw cash -- well, in his sport, there's only so much he can make in straight salary, and at his level of celebrity, many of the endorsements come to him. Heading to a major market will increase his paydays -- just not necessarily all that much. What does he want? To be wined and dined? Told how much everyone loves him? A cross-country flirtathon? I know what I want. I want this to be over by July 1st.

9. "Well..." |
let's go with a widely-respected measure of greatness: NBA MVP awards. There are only 12 players who have won the MVP more than once:Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (6) Bill Russell (5) Michael Jordan (5) Wilt Chamberlain (4) Moses Malone (3) Magic Johnson (3) Larry Bird (3) Bob Pettit (2) Karl Malone (2) Tim Duncan (2) Steve Nash (2) LeBron James (2) That's our starting point to determine the best player of all-time. LeBron not only wants to be in that discussion, but he wants to win it. But there are only 3 people on that list who never won an NBA title: K. Malone, Nash and LeBron. Nobody has ever won 3 MVPs and not won a title. My best guess is that LeBron focuses on winning titles and goes to Dallas to play for Mark Cuban.

Maybe he could interview housekeepers and nannies while he's in the mood. This is getting out of control. I want it to be over already! From HoopsHype: James has apparently decided, according to various outlets, to host potential suitors in Ohio once free agency officially opens Thursday. In addition to meeting with Cleveland, the five outside hopefuls believed to be visiting LeBron on his turf are New York, New Jersey, Chicago, Miami and the Los Angeles Clippers. Dallas is working feverishly to get into that mix, a league source confirmed to NBA.com Sunday. The Mavericks are hopelessly over the cap, unlike those other five teams, but that hasn't dampened the front office's enthusiasm for taking a swing at LeBron. NBA.com

The latest scuttlebutt is that LeBron and Bosh have both "agreed" to go to Chicago. Then again, maybe not. One day after rumours were pretty strong, poof, they've become quiet.

They're not the first rumors to claim some degree of collusion between the top free agents. It wouldn't surprise me if they were trying to plan out the league's future to some degree -- and as long as it doesn't get down to 'I'll throw it this year if you throw it next year', they're legal.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the Knicks make him an offer he can't refuse. But I ultimately believe that Lebron either stays with the Cavs, or moves to Chicago. Out of all the teams courting him, only Chicago has a shot at contending right away, assuming that the others don't get multiple big names along with James. Yes, the Heat would be an immediate contender, but I find it hard to believe that he and Wade would want to play together, so I'm ruling them out.And to be fair to James, I still think the Cavs are the single most overrated team in the NBA, so getting out of Cleveland isn't a bad option. They literally have no second scoring option on their team, which is a must in order to win the NBA title. Yes, management has put a few nice pieces in place so that they can breeze through the regular season, but this is simply a terrible playoff team. They're like the San Diego Chargers of the NBA.

...made at the very end of a live hour on ESPN, which is going to be pulling out filler at a rate Ryan Seacrest would be jealous of. Imagine the interviews. The special guest stars. The musical numbers. The sheer off-the-scale DAWdom on exhibit -- live! But let's not completely blast him: while ESPN and various sponsors would be paying for this Very Special Hour, LeBron isn't getting the cash. All funds raised, as per our DAW's wishes, will go to the Boys & Girls Club Of America. Even so -- yeesh. It's not as if there's much else on.

39. "Current rumors: Miami." |
Combination of:* getting to play with Bosh & Wade. * salary cap space available * no state income tax * city nightlife (no doubt) From the reported pass-alongs, some people in his camp were trying to talk him out of it with advice like 'It'll dilute your brand!' Don't play with quality teammates or people won't pay as much attention to you -- how's that for entourage DAWs? And there's also the idea that it's Wade's team and everyone else would be his supporting cast... We could see a 'too many stars, only one ball' problem evolve here if everyone can't keep stat drives and egos in simul-check. But if they can, then this is a potential powerhouse team. It's just not one with the ability to adjust its roster on the fly.

Yeah, after they dump the guy needed to make this work, either by the sign-and-trade of Bosh to Miami, or to some other victim, if they get James then they won't have much room for more than just league minimum contracts...

Another thing, without looking at the article, is this: why is ownership so ticked off about a player leaving without them being called, when if the ownership was to potentially trade the player, the player might end up on a different team without being called first?

Possibly because of the whole 'we built our lives around you for years' aspect: this is more betrayed lover than franchise owner -- although this particular owner's made a few blunders along the way himself. It says something about the magnitude of LeBron's PR screwup/image destruction to have management coming across as the good guy. And that something ain't good.

Being from Northern Ohio- LeBron can go any where he pleases- but why do that show on ESPN- no class.I agree he has been surrounded since age 15 by people telling him he is a god. He now has a fantastic fat ego. "I made the decision this morning"-?-please He has had this in the works since the 2008 Olympics team and certainly was thinking about it back in Nov 2009 while the Cavs were playing in Miami LeBron announced he would be changing his number next year to #6- funny how the Heat have retired #23 but not the Cavs. Party on dude. Cleveland will sink into Lake Erie. Syren 2007
