"The 13th Annual Great Canadian Party Thread"
What, you thought we weren't gonna keep this going?

It's time to gather, once again, to keep the board spirits going while those south of the border are mingling with their families. And, of course, everyone is welcome regardless of nationality if you've got some time to kill.

So... let the party get started!

*Looks around*

Pretty quiet so far. I will just pull up a chair at the bar and get ready to watch some football. Not unlike what I actually plan on doing later today.

I'll probably spend most of the day explaining to my relatives south of border (again) that Canada celebrates Thanksgiving in October, not end of November.

I may be south of the border but I've been to Canada.

I'm going to Mom's house in a little bit as soon as I get off work. Went in at 6am just so I wouldn't be late to dinner and have to fight the dog for leftovers.

I can't wait to hear my BIL make incredibly stupid jokes. It wouldn't be a holiday if he didn't.

Thanks for keeping the home fires burning folks.

I should be watched....closely.

A better view of the bus from the first picture above - had a friend ask me what was so funny about the pic and I realized the word "SORRY" wasn't clear:

That's so ... Canadian.

He's only a threat to party-crash around Metro Toronto. Just go out to Kitchener or Oshawa -- but be careful to avoid the Oshawa GM types, who may be spies for Obama.

Story in today's local paper about Ford wanting to go to Detroit for the NHL Winter Classic, and that because of his crack admissions he might not get into the US.

You lucky Americans.

Hmmmm, something that will keep problematic Canadians on their side of the border.

I wonder what it would take to introduce Celine Dion and Justin Bieber to Ford's crack dealer?

I'm hoping he'll be allowed over the border and then stopped from trying to get back into Canada by the border guards!

I have a couple of questions.

What exactly are Canadians thankful for in October?
What do Canadians traditionally eat at the Thanksgiving Table?
How close do any of our Canadians live to an Indian Reservation?
and finally... Moose? Really delicious or just gamey?

For extra credit: I get Poutine. But please, explain the fascination with Brown Bread.

1. It is logical that our Thanksgiving happens earlier than the US Thanksgiving. In both countries, despite what it has become, it is traditionally a celebration of the harvest. Given our more northern location, our harvest happens earlier in the year.

2. I suspect our TG looks a lot like yours at the table. Most people have turkey, veggies, and lots of pies. Pumpkin is my personal favourite.

3. Toronto is the largest city in Canada, and there are reserves within 1 hour drive. I believe Pepe's cottage is about 5 minutes from a reserve, and my cottage about 30 mins away. That said, Indians are not common in southern Ontario as they are in other parts of Canada (north and west).

4. I don't think I have ever had moose. But I have seen more than a handful in the wild. Beautiful (gangly) creatures.

Brown bread? Isn't it a bit more healthy than white bread? I assume it has a bit more of the grain in it.

1. Yes, it's because our harvest is earlier than in most parts of the U.S. and most of our reasons for Thanksgiving are the same as for those south of the border.

Incidentally, we had the first Thanksgiving in what is now Canada in 1578 when Martin Frobisher gave thanks in a celebration. The French explorers led by Samuel de Champlain in the early 1600s also had Thanksgiving celebrations in New France (now Quebec). By contrast, the Pilgrims had the first U.S. celebration in 1621.

2. I'd say that we eat pretty much the same goods that those south of the border do. Turkey, mashed potatoes, veggies, pumpkin pie, cranberry sauce ... nom nom.

3. Indeed, my cottage is a two-minute drive from the Mnjikaning first nations, where the Casino Rama is located. There's a rather large Six Nations reserve between Hamilton and Brantford, a hour away from Toronto and just a few minutes from where I work. I work for a college named after a First Nations group. And my nephew is a Native (his mom is 100% Native, dad is my brother in law).

(Another incidental note - they're called 'First Nations' or 'Natives' up here while 'Indians' refer to those from India - there's plenty of immigrants from India that live in the Toronto area)

4. Moose? Never tried one and don't think I ever will. But I've had bison burgers and they're tastier & leaner than regular ground beef burgers.

Hello fellow Canadians! Yes, I am late to the party..very, very late. Yes, I have been MIA..for like...years...but I just had the yen to stop by and say "Merry Christmas" and hop on the party bandwagon

Oh, and to answer some of the earlier questions, yes, in my family we acually celebrate both Thanksgiving holidays as I have a BIL who lives in Seattle!
I live a five minute drive from an Indian reserve..and yes, as mentioned above they are called First Nations here...as we have many people from the country of India...or are also Indians or , as more commonly referred to here: Indo-Canadians. (kind of like Afro-Americans I suppose)

I have eaten moose many, many times, as my dad was a hunter. I am heading north for Christmas, so will be enjoying -15 C temps, and lots of snow, and yes, do some cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and toboganning. yes, about as Canadian as they come...LOL..

Happy Christmas everyone!
