What veterans are you thanking their service for? That is not the flag of the United States.

Just wondering when we added another state...

It's only been a year since Puerto Rico voted to become a state. It's a process, of course, so it hasn't yet become official.

Well if it's not official.. then ... that is still not the flag of the United States. This thresd was to thank all us Veterans of the UNITED STATES.

You might as well have planted a 10 foot flag with a hammer and sickle, and thanked veterans for their service. It's no more being the flag of my country at this time than the one you posted with your political views.

I like it.

Veterans from Puerto Rico have fought and died in USA wars, and as a territory of the US, Puerto Ricans are US citizens and deserve to be remembered too. As are citizens of other countries (Mexico, etc.) who have joined up in the US Armed forces and fought for our freedom. And died.

And, sooner or later, we will need a 52 star flag (when Canadians also follow the bread crumb trail south).

To all who served.

That's not the point though fishy. People from MANY countries have died for American 'freedoms'. People in Vietnam have died for American 'freedom'.

The UNION may change in 10 years, 50 years... whenever, and we'll all accept it. The UNION count has changed many times, and we're still the UNITED STATES.

But the UNION count is 50 (fifty) right now,,,,, at this time... and the flag has 50 stars on it right now, AT THIS TIME. And to post a hundred and forty eleven foot desecrated flag (a persons political fancy of one) ...

on a 'Thank You for your Service Veterans' thresd

According to 'Flag Code' Changing the flag to fit your political views is considered consecration of the flag, but is generally ignored by freedom of speech.

But then Dabo seems to care less about any of that... on
'Thank you for your Service, Veterans'. thresd...

Oh, now I understand your objection. But that part of the code doesn't apply to efforts to design flags for future use by the USA, and the 51 star flag I posted above is such a submission (the design considered the most likely to be adopted).

Anyway, I was trying to be inclusive in that post, which is why I went to the bother of linking to the five songs of the branches of the US armed forces. With singing, not just instrumentation, so unfortunately the video portions themselves aren't the best available.

I'm not totally opposed to Pueto Rico from becoming a state, just so you know. That's neither here nor there.

I viewed this thresd as thanking soldiers who fought in World War II, Vietnam war, Korean war, etc fought in wars for the flag, (whose design rules are pretty specific) many died for and all who served this countries flag and the freedoms it represents. Then someone posts their own version of the flag.

Kinda reminds me of a lawyer handing someone an eviction notice and says "Have a good day."

Personally, I don't like the idea of colonializing, and handing statehoodship to every country who want to be a part of the United States.

The flag has 50 (fifty) stars. If you wanted to honor those who serve the country on veterans day, you would not have posted an altered flag they fought for for your own political agenda.

Statehood for Puerto Rico, the District, the Philippines, some breakaway portion of Colorado, the Moon -- as you say, neither here nor there. My only motivation in posting that flag was looking to the future. Isn't that what they fight for, ultimately?

Yeah, I get where you're coming from. And I have respect for your position.

But I disagree. I see no disrespect in what Dabo did and you do, but that's not really a big deal, is it?

IMO he was essentially honoring Vets on Veterans day. His way.

I probably have opinions about the flag that you would also disagree with, for instance there was a time long ago when I wore a shirt that had the American Flag on the back adorned with a peace symbol in the place of the field of stars. Caught a lot of grief, but I'm still proud that I did that.

Being able to debate these things and disagree with one another are just two of the freedoms we enjoy because of your service and that of all other vets throughout the years.

So, Thanks (do not read sarcasm into that).

No, your right fishboy. I sometimes take these things too seriously. I just kindof expected it to be a
Thank you for serving our country thresd , then I saw what was very apparently not this countries flag, someone elses version of what it should look like.

When I was in the army it was a very solemn and humbling experience to care for the flag and all the rules surrounding folding, tilting, etc... because of what it represented.
So I probly took the Veterans day Honor too seriously.

Oh, why do I try to make a point.... What's the matter with me? Don't I know better than to try to make sense here? LOL

I have a ticket around here somewhere... now where did I put it?

These comments bring to mind some other points about flag etiquette:

I've had people tell me that it's a violation to have a flag patch on your clothes if they are going through the wash. Another friend of mine objected to the custom of placing a small paper Mexican flag (on a toothpick) with the dinner combination served at a restaurant because it would be thrown into the trash. Finally, I've had innumerable folks tell me that a flag must be burned if it touches the ground.

While flag etiquette is certainly important, there is still plenty of room for excess.

YMMV, but I saw it as being disrespectful to be starting a spat in a thread such as this one honouring the many people in different wars who fought to give us a peaceful existence.

ETA: There's a time and place to discuss about the appropriateness of a flag's design, but it is not here when we are giving thanks to the many that not only died while serving but those who are still living for their bravery. I get the idea behind the 51st state (as it's well known that Puerto Rico is well on the way to becoming the 51st) and I get the idea behind the sanctity of the flag, but is this thread the right place for it? To create disagreement when we are trying to honour those who died fighting to allow us to do things such as to freely type on a message board?

As my grandmother once so eloquently put it, if my grandfather (who died in WW2) saw the type of petty things that people fight about today in our world, he'd tell them to {translated as STFU}.

10. "RE: Veterans Day"
For The Fallen

With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children,
England mourns for her dead across the sea.
Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of spirit,
Fallen in the cause of the free.

Solemn the drums thrill: Death august and royal
Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres.
There is music in the midst of desolation
And a glory that shines upon our tears.

They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

They mingle not with laughing comrades again;
They sit no more at familiar tables of home;
They have no lot in our labour of the day-time;
They sleep beyond England's foam.

But where our desires are and our hopes profound,
Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight,
To the innermost heart of their own land they are known
As the stars are known to the Night;

As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust,
Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain,
As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness,
To the end, to the end, they remain.

Laurence Robert Binyon, 1869-1943

Nice sentiment. You English have a way with words. But brevity? Well, not so much. But maybe that's overrated anyway.

To all vets, past, present, and future.
To all vets, US vets and allied vets.
Our thanks is hardly enough, but Thanks anyway.
We will remember.

Normally only the 4th verse is used, but I felt that the entire poem was very moving.

Rupert Brooke wrote IF I should die, think only this of me;
That there's some corner of a foreign field
That is for ever England.

And I think that England can be replaced by any nationality without losing its meaning.

Icecat posted this on FB very moving
