"Requesting OT Power"
Most of you know my DH has Parkinson's Disease. The struggles have become harder and harder with new problems coming along just about the time we get one tackled. The biggest one now is his not being able to swallow. He had a Barium swallow test last March and another on Wed this week. He failed this last one completely. Jerry will get a PEG - which is a feeding tube. This will allow him to get the nutrition he needs as well as help prevent aspiration (food & liquids getting in his lungs) which can cause pneumonia. This will be a lifestyle change for both of us but HE made the decision & I agree with him. He is tired of strangling & coughing & choking every time he tries to eat. We want him to get his strength back and get back to enjoying doing the things we like to do - minus eating of course . Jerry's surgery is scheduled for Monday 10th at 8:30 (we have to be there at 6:30 - the hospital we have to use if 45 miles away). I'm expecting to feel the power of OT all weekend long and especially on Monday morning. I can count on all of you. a Syren special

Thank you all my wonderful friends.
Again last night we were up most of the latter part of the night. Every night after midnight, he wakes up having trouble breathing and trying to cough up whatever has gotten into his lungs. He's had a cold for over a week so there's extra to cough & his muscles don't work like normal.
Hopefully, when he no longer has to take food orally, he won't have this problem w/ stuff getting into his lungs.

I've stayed really busy today, but my mind stays with this every moment. He's teased me because I never have really liked to cook; so now I won't have to. But it will be so weird.
My family is very close; we have Sunday dinner all together after church; it's a social event. He says he can just sit with us; that it will be okay. I worry that he will become a hermit .
I'm trying to stay positive that this improves his life & his health.

Surgery went as scheduled; rather quickly in fact.
We've been home for several hours.
He's napped on & off.
Since he has a cold, coughing is what is hurting his stomach the most. He can't cough hard cause it hurts too much. His throat muscles don't work well so he can't just clear his throat either.
His food has been delivered; the home health nurse won't be here for another hour (close to 5:30 pm) to teach us the procedures for feeding.

We're doing really well with this.
It's not hard at all. Sorta odd but easy. He sure "eats" faster than I do
The first formula food they brought was Glucerna 1.0; it has 1430 calories per can & he was to have 4 per day.
Then they decided he should be getting the 1.5 which has 1500 calories per can & he should have 5 cans per day.
& it's for diabetics.
Doesn't that sound crazy?
I know they want him to gain a bit of weight back and he needs the nutrition, but 7500 calories a day?
We got a new scale so we can weigh regularly.
If it's accurate, he's lost 2.4 lbs since Tues.
He should be gaining, not losing.
On the flip side?
I? have lost 6 lbs since I last weighed a few months ago;
and .2 lbs since Tues.
