The "Day that will live in infamy" sent the US into the horror of the Second World War.

I'd like to take this time to honor and remember one particular veteran of that day, my former Boy Scout Scoutmaster -- Jim Moore.

He was a wonderful Scoutmaster, taking us out into nature, enthusiastically opening our eyes to many magnificent things, guiding us into productive manhood while instilling a sense of honor, dedication, and compassion that serves me to this day.

His story of that day was, ironically, rather humorous. The night before (a Saturday), he was out with his wife and a couple of friends celebrating the news that they were expecting their first child. Now Jim, being a good Navy man, knew how to celebrate. Many bottles of fine adult beverages gave their all for the cause.

Early the next morning, when the fecal matter hit the rotating air circulation device, Jim was still, shall we say, a wee bit under the influence. It was Sunday, and Navy tradition called for him to be wearing his "whites". But they couldn't be found right away. Bombs were dropping nearby, but Jim continued his desperate search. Finally successful, he dashed out and climbed aboard his small motor scooter was last seen weaving down the road to the docks (the fact that Jim was rail-thin only adds to the humor of this image). He made it to his ship and they were one of the few fortunate ones to clear Pearl Harbor and make it safely to sea. It would be six months before he was able to contact his wife.

His wife (Wilma) was fine -- she ended up volunteering at a hospital (she eventually became a nurse) but all Jim heard was "she was in the hospital). It was an amazing time indeed.

In 1973 Jim retired from his job and decided to move to Northern California. He hated leaving our Troop. Six weeks later he died of a sudden heart attack.

Thank you Jim -- and all those who served.

LAST EDITED ON 12-10-12 AT 05:31 PM (EST)

I'd like to second this thread. I could say things in praise of my relatives who fought in WWII, but I'd rather talk about something else.

In my first industrial job (well prior to law school), I worked with an older engineer who was Silesian and grew up speaking German in the former German state of Lower Silesia (Niederschlesien). He was born in 1927, and he was 15 when he was called up to the Wehrmacht in early 1943 (which he joined early because the Waffen SS was also calling youths up, and his parents thought (hoped?) that the regular army would be safer). Despite the high German casualties at the end of the war, he survived, was taken prisoner (by he Allies, not the Russians) at the end of the war (and his stories of his unit trying to get itself captured by the Allies instead of by the Russians were great), was (along with his family) exiled from Poland when Silesia was given to modern-day Poland and the German speakers were kicked out, and ended up coming to the U.S. with his parents as a destitute exile in 1948, when he was 21, although none of them spoke more than a few words of English.

I always keep this guy (whose real first name was the German name "Sigmund", although his last name was clearly Polish) in mind when I think about the world, for a few simple reasons.

1) Except for fanatics, nobody really wants to fight a war. The best most people can hope for is to survive intact. Doesn't matter which side you're on. This is even true in a nation run by fanatics like the Nazis. See All Quiet on the Western Front for a WWI-example of the same thing in Prussia.

2) I'm actually strongly in favor of immigration. Not English speaking? So what? Except: it has to be regulated, legal immigration, not the "Wild West" illegal immigration that has become so widespread while our politicians pander to the Latino lobby.

Sorry for getting off track.

I hope there are records of some of the stories from the men & women of this time.

I am grateful for those men & women who fought abroad and at home for our freedoms.
