As a followup to BKTR&C day, lets have a "Be Snarky to Democrats and Liberals Day". This should be a fun game each day for the next four years. And I'll start: Four more years the same as the last four years, with the same leader who led us with ultra-partisan finger pointing politics to edge of economic disaster. And apparently, we're gonna follow, like lemmings over the cliff. (OK, that may not be as much snark as much as it is reality, thus a tragi-drama, but here we are. So I failed, but maybe you can interject some humor. Or maybe some of our Canadian or Mexican friends can see a bright spot in there for them?).

Well... the Liberals up here are about to undergo the same procedure the Republicans did in the 90's in a desperate attempt to regain power after years of rule by the opposing party -- Justin Trudeau is being heavily counted upon to bring the Liberals from the dumps, a lot like when W followed in his father's footsteps south of the border.
Let's just hope that Justin doesn't leave the Liberals in utter ruins like W apparently did to the current Republicans.

Nah, Dubya accomplished all that well before 2008, if anything Bronco Bama only just turned it around so you Dubya-ites knew what we were talking about all along.
Or Cheney-ites, since he was the real puppetmaster all those long horrible years.
For real though, I have to ask, whut up with the snarky-ism? I was genuinely trying to be nice and defuse eruptions when I started that other thread. Be considerate of your feelings. Be nice, you know. Snarky in reply to nice? I just don't get it, because I was seriously anti-snarky, no in your face or none of that, really.
I'm not going to go to the polar opposite no matter what, but I guess it says something there is now a secessionist movement sparking up in several places throughout the country simply because some citizens cannot accept that they lost an election.
Curiously, I read that someone in North Dakota is now campaigning that New York should be forcibly seceeded against their will. At least that's original.
Should Puerto Rico be forcibly seceeded before it even gets to be a state? Just wondering.

There has always (almost always?) been partisan politics, that's inherent in a multi-party system, but Bush years were no where nearly as partisan as the last four years. His handling of the vote for Obamacare is a remarkable example that has few if any equals in American history. As was his handling of the debt crisis.
And it should be noted that Ultra liberals including some notable hollywoodites were making the same types of threats after the 2000 election. I think that those things just go hat in hand with the aftermath of a national election. There are always sore losers on both sides.
As to Puerto Rico, what I was wondering is if statehood might hasten the thaw with Cuba. What are the economic ties between the two, and the diplomatic ties? Or are those things completely determined by the US laws and policies since they are a US territory?

Well, Puerto Rico has a diplomatic mission in Cuba, for what little good it does. There are probably some Puerto Rican journalists in Cuba at any given time. That's pretty much all that can happen under the official US policy of isolating Cuba.

Over the weekend my boss was at a party talking about his prognosis for the next four years. His main talking points were:
1. He and his longtime girlfriend can't get married because their combined income will be too high and they'll pay excessive, punitive taxes.
2. If they decide to have kids, he wants her to quit working and go on welfare so "he can get 20% back of the 60% he'll be paying in taxes." (direct quote)
3. He's worked overseas several times in his career and thinks a 4-year contract would be a good thing.

An investigation led by local and federal authorities, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, revealed suspicious behavior and circumstances surrounding the explosion. In particular, various elements of the gas line at Shirley's home may have been tampered with before the blast, including a missing step-down regulator, which reduces gas pressure entering the home, and a missing on/off valve to the residence's gas fireplace.
"The absence of the valve and regulator would explain how such a large volume of gas would be released into the home," Curry told CNN.
In addition, the digital thermostat at Shirley's home had been replaced by a slide-switch thermostat that "will produce a spark when the thermostat reaches a specified temperature," the probable cause affidavit says. However, it appears that the thermostat did not contribute to the explosion; instead, it appears to have been started by the microwave in the kitchen, which was a model that could be programmed to start 24 hours in advance.

Shirley, 47, was facing mounting financial woes, including $63,000 in credit card debt and worsening bankruptcy proceedings, court documents say. And a friend of Mark Leonard's told investigators Leonard said he had "lost a ton of money" — about $10,000 — at a casino some three weeks before the explosion.
A probable cause affidavit says Shirley filed for bankruptcy this year but stopped making her court-arranged payments and failed to appear at a July bankruptcy hearing. The home's original loan was for $116,000 and a second mortgage was taken out on the home for $65,000, the affidavit also says.
In another call that day, Leonard told his friend he had been surfing Craigslist "looking for a Ferrari to buy" and explained that he could afford the luxury car because Shirley had jewelry insurance and "they expect to get $300,000 and he would get $100,000" in the insurance payout, according to the affidavit.
And to seal the deal...
Curry said that the day before the blast, the brothers asked an employee of local gas utility Citizens Energy several questions, "including the differences between propane and natural gas, the role of a regulator in a house and controlling the flow of natural gas and how much gas it would require to fill a house."
