"Craig's list advice"
As some of you know, I am no longer CTgirl. My DH got transferred to the Boston area and we moved into our new home about a month ago. Now I have a piano and some furniture to get rid of. I'm not looking to make much money, I just want the stuff GONE! And not have to pay for the removal of it. I lived far enough outside of any metropolitan area in CT that Craig's list wasn't widely used. What do I need to know? Any tips? Other than knowing not to let anyone come over when I am home alone, I am totally a novice at this. Any advice would be appreciated!

P.S. Tell me your good and bad Craig's list stories too! I've been hearing about Craig's list for several years but don't know anyone IRL who's used it. I think a few of you have mentioned it.

Never, ever, under any circumstances whatsoever, make use of Craigslist.

Well, there was this little brouhaha in my area a few years ago:

http://www.king5.com/news/local/Three-arrested-in-Craigslist-ad-murder-92816954.html

However, I have used Craigslist and as long as you take precautions, I don't see why not.

Don't let anyone in your house. Move the items you are selling to your garage, leave the door open, and in addition to having your husband around, ask the neighbor across the street to be doing some yard work when the potential buyers are there, for example.

Be prepared for a lot of scammers and no shows.

And last but not least, good luck!

Also, Goodwill is a great charity.

»having your husband around«

I forgot about that. Have someone who is "kill friendly" nearby.

It's a dangerous world.

I have found it is very hard to get rid of furniture if you don't have a truck. Goodwill and the Salvation Army don't pick up like they used to and the smaller charities will only pick up stuff that one person can handle. I had to pay a junk lugger to get rid of a couch etc. a few years ago. That is why I am going down the Craig's list route.

We could take an ax to the piano and put it out in the garbage but that goes against all my better instincts!

I called around to used furniture shops when I needed to get rid of some stuff. I got tips on who would pick up the stuff from a local furniture store. They had a ready made list for people who bought furniture from them, but didn't now what to do with the old furniture. Having this list handy helped them with people like you and who they thought might buy new stuff from them.

You might find that the local Goodwill, etc. will be more willing to pick up stuff in the big city than they were out in the country.

I want the piano.

If Sandee will stop making pots and learn how to play, I'll pay anything!

Seriously, I've both purchased and sold some things on craigslist. CASH ONLY. Just stick in a few pictures, name your price and go for it. Your turf, don't deliver. If the customer monkey weiner perp dork shows up with the goods, say thanks, here ya go, and bid him- her- it "adoo".

10. "RE: Craig's list advice"
Max's tips for Craigslist success:

- Always include at least one picture in the listing
- Price the item to move (to increase the odds that it goes away)
- Only accept cash
- Don't agree to hold an item for someone even if they offer a deposit
- Be sure someone else is home with you when a person is coming to look at the item
- Delete the listing immediately after the item is sold and gone

Expect lots of random emails from people who send one message and then disappear, and expect no-shows from people who may or may not call to tell you they're not coming. If you want to make things happen faster, include a phone number in the listing, but format it like "seven-2-Six 8-zeRo-fOur..." to lessen the odds of robocalls or similar unpleasantness.

I have used craiglist to buy and sell alot and have had no issues and was always alone but then people are pretty freindly here on the island. I do agree with everything Max Headroom said though.

Good luck! You might also check the WANTED ads on CL and see if someone is looking for what you have to offer.

I used it to sell my jetski, trampoline, golf bag, freezer and a few other smaller items. I never put a phone number in the add and had lots of pictures plus masked my email address. I was super nervous about having someone show up at my home and worried about phony checks - personal or cashiers so I would screen the emails I got and reply back using the masked Craig's list email which made it a bit of a pain to keep going back to the site but it worked. I did get cash for everything and checked the bills before they left. It was bit of work but it worked.

We've sold a snowboard, lawn mower, bookshelf, air conditioner, boxes, canoe, guitar, etc. Every single person showed up as discussed, paid cash and the price we wanted. Never have had an issue. I do consider our experiences to be lucky. Pics are key.

I haven't used Craig's List, so can't comment specifically. I have used eBay and Kijiji to sell a few things and have gone the "trust others and get lucky" route. Probably a Canadian thing.

My other thought is that there must be a huge amount of demand for furniture in the NYC area after last week's storm. I wonder if there is any organization collecting and delivering those sorts to things?

That was my thought too but I think logistically it is easier to collect clothing, toiletries and non-perishables (and I have participated in two of those already).

I would give away the furniture in a heartbeat but its that piano which is a PITA (and its an old player piano so its very, very heavy and so old it doesn't keep a tune anymore).*

My other thought is that there must be a huge amount of demand for furniture in the NYC area after last week's storm.

Yes, it's been all over the news that in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy there's been a critical shortage of pianos in the NYC area. Some people have been lined up at the Steinway showroom for days.

CT, is it a good piano? You might want to get it looked at by a local tuner or restorer before offering it for sale. Otherwise I've not used Craig's list, so, no advice.

ETA: Oops I didn't see your post about it being a player piano. Still, a local dealer or restorer might be interested in it.
