"A Moment of Silence to Remember"
I know we will all forever remember this day, regardless of where you call home.

I know I'm not the only one who feels a bit out of sorts on this date every year. I don't think about it affecting me, but it always does.

May we all always cherish our freedoms and those who sacrifice for us.

I'll never forget this day...

I was in Rotterdam for a UN trade & transport working group meeting, in the Beurs World Trade Center there, and we were quickly evacuated soon after it was realized that the WTC was indeed under attack. I reached the hotel room only to see them begin tumbling down, the most horrific sight I've ever seen on the screen, realizing how many people were still inside.

The following Friday, there was 5 minutes of silence throughout Europe. Rotterdam is one of the busiest cities in the world, and it was shocking to see every car stopped, every counter temporarily ceasing business, every pedestrian standing instead of in a fast walk. Never has silence ever sounded so eerie in my life, broken only by the peal of church bells ringing across the city and into the sky.

I hadn't heard about Europe's moment of silence before. That is incredibly moving. I still get teary-eyed whenever I think about that day.

I found a CNN article about Europe's moment of silence then. I saw many people openly weeping while I stood outside on the steps of the Beurs WTC in Rotterdam with them.

I stand corrected, it was three minutes, not five, but it seemed like a lot longer than even five minutes.

It also blows my mind how absolutely gorgeous that day was and many of the September 11ths that followed, including today. It's hard to imagine such death and destruction on a beautiful late summer day.

The other thing that blows my mind is that my parents, who were in China, knew about the attack before I did. They watched the second tower fall before the Chinese cut the CNN feed for 24 hours. I was at the gym in Connecticut. We were told what had happened but I didn't get to a TV until both towers were down. I spent the rest of the day trying to contact my husband who was midtown and his brother and sister who both worked in NYC. My BIL, a structural engineer, was in a taxi on the way to a meeting with the Port Authority at the WTC when he got a call that they weren't ready and to not come. Thank goodness for inefficient bureaucracy that day!!

Yeah, it was the second instance since 2001 where the anniversary fell on a Tuesday, the same day of the week. I concur: the weather today seemed almost exactly the same as then, and it' s been the same on almost every anniversary. This morning I was on the Q train crossing the Manhattan Bridge at almost exactly the same time as in 2001, and had a view of the Towers' location at just about 10 am. Though this time I wasn't going to work: I had a coincidental dental appointment nearby.

Something that I realized today ... the oldest of my students were, at most, 3 years old on that horrible day. They have no real memories of the events or feelings we all shared. While most have an understanding, for them it's not much different than other historic dates like December 7, 1941, November 22, 1963 or January 28, 1986.

Another memory I have is from the 2-3 days of no airplanes. I live right under the landing pattern for LAX, and planes flying only a couple of thousand (at best) feet over my roof has been the norm for my entire life.

It was eerie, seeing an empty sky -- actually disturbing to some extent.

I think of those empty skies often too - even tho I'm no where near an airport. It was strange not seeing the contrails that we see daily.

Where I drove home then was under a bit of sky that usually has a lot of contrails and it was very eerie to not see any. Like the entire sky was waiting to exhale.

And they even had their own flag raising ceremony. How thoughtful:

Of course, the US Embassy n Cairo apologized to the Arabs afterward, though the apologies have since been deleted when other people (who weren't as in the tank for Obama as the MSM is) noticed.

You can now return to your regular discussion about why we need to re-elect Obama because the U.S. government otherwise wouldn't ensure that Sandra Fluke doesn't have to pay for her birth control pills while she's in law school.

So, some moron posts a 15-minute (or so) trailer on Youtube to a so-called "film", purportedly 200 hours of it yet to come, flagrantly denigrating a faith and its founder. Are you actually surprised by this reaction to it?

And what does this have to do with Obama and the upcoming election? Nada.

You're way off track, off the rails with the same cars as some of the media.

Yes, perhaps. What bothers me is the fact that some people, like this youtube film maker, go out of their way to incite a violent reaction that they know is surely going to result from what they say and do. You can blame the "fundamental Islamicists" for the violence at the embassy, but no matter where you go, the reaction is going to be strong, even among moderate Muslims.

(eta) Can I just say that this guy is an "imbacile"?

Nice to know that freedom of speech is another American value not supported by the Obamaphiles.

And what does this have to do with Obama and the upcoming election? Nada.

Right. Just like the seizing of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran had nothing to do with Jimmy Carter's presidency. It was just bad luck that it happened during his term of office and never happened again until now.

Freedom of speech is one of the core American values that I cherish, having lived and worked in countries where freedom of speech is curbed.

But with freedom of speech comes a responsibility to exercise it with care. And in this case, it was highly irresponsible, bound to incite violence.

The latest is that the attack on the Libyan embassy may have been a planned, organized assault, not the spontaneous work of violent protesters. You're blaming Obama for this? If Romney (who has the temerity of calling the administration's response to the attack "disgraceful") had been sitting in that Oval Office chair at the time, it wouldn't have made any difference. At all.

It was just bad luck that it happened during his term of office and never happened again until now.

Seriously?

The U.S. Embassies in Beirut and Kuwait were bombed at different times during Reagan's presidency, as well as the ones in Tanzania and Kenya during his final months in office.

The U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv was attacked during Bush 41's presidency.

The WTC was first attacked during Clinton's presidency, as well as the U.S. embassies in Tanzania and Kenya. The U.S.S. Cole was also attacked.

9/11 happened during Bush 43's presidency.

Should I keep going?

Didn't forget - it was in the same year as the embassy bombing that I alluded to, and my list was in no way a comprehensive list of every incident involving the U.S. as I was just initially listing a few examples off the top of my head and then made a rather cursory glance online. The point stands is that it's laughable to say that it is just "bad luck" that it happened during Carter's presidency and then never happened again since.

I suppose there will be splitting of hairs to say "I said 'seizing'" but an attack is an attack, regardless of the method whether it's seizing, bombing, attacking a ship, etc.
